Carly Simon is classic rock?

By coincidence, I listened this morning to an aircheck of Damion on KLOS, Los Angeles, working an evening shift (this was the 7:00 hour) in April of 1978.

The most recent ratings book would have been fall of '77. KLOS was #6 overall, and apart from two beautiful music stations (KBIG and KJOI), it was the highest-rated music station in Los Angeles (the rest of the top 5 included a talk station (KABC) and two all-news stations (KNX and KFWB).

The aircheck only runs about 24 minutes, but here's what got played on one of the most successful AORs in the country at that time, in the early evening:

Santana-Evil Ways
Rod Stewart-Hot Legs
Leo Sayer-How Much Love
Billy Joel-Movin' Out
Fleetwood Mac-Rhiannon

So, yeah---it wasn't rocking as hard as we remember.
Wow. I will say that overall I wouldn't object to "Movin' Out" but once I know that song is being played, I'm movin' out because ...

And you are way out of the generation that CHR stations attract. Today's young people in their majority think that Fats Domino and Paul Anka are dreadful.
"Gilmore Girls" didn't make Paul Anka cool?

For those who don't know Lorelai named her dog Paul Anka and had a dream where the singer appeared as himself being led around on a leash.

And yes, I do like Fats Domino and Paul Anka.

I don't know what Paul Anka's connection to the Gilmore Girls is, but about 17 years ago he recorded an album of covers that may have introduced him to a new generation. I remember enjoying Mr. Anka's take on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Well, I like him.
And that does not make you cool, either.

There is a saying in Spanish, "They made colors to accommodate tastes". It fits with music too.

I hope not. and I like her.
Me, too. And it was a joke. Doris stopped making records in 1966. There was a recording session in 1967, but nothing from it was released until 1994, combined with other unreleased material.

There was also an album released in 2011, when Doris was 89, that includes more contemporary material (a version of The Beach Boys' "Disney Girls", the Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream" and Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful") recorded in the 1980s. Doris didn't intend for the tracks to be released as an album, but to be used as background music for an animal-themed TV show she had at the time (Doris Day's Best Friends).

It actually made Billboard's Top 200 Albums list, peaking at #135---and went Top 10 in the UK.

To steer this back on track---Doris stopped making albums at age 44. Carly Simon recorded until she was 66. She's 79 now (sonofagun).

I didn't intend it as a joke. I thought I heard it on the news and it seemed like she was in her 90s at the time. It was either punk rock or hip-hop but it was something decidedly un-Doris Day like! That said, I can't find anything about it. Oh well, que sera, sera.

She probably isn’t classic rock, but I’d consider myself lucky to hear her on a classic rock station over the annoying songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers that I am regularly stuck with.
