Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

The hint was the retirement of the WCBS News Director, who mentioned the new union deal that combined the staffs. Once that was done, this became easier to accomplish.

When did that occur? Just curious.

I guess Elliot in the Morning didn't work out too well. Breakup terms for the deal must not have been all that financially punitive. Wasn't he added to 92.3 this past winter?

NYC deserves Alternative rock as it does Country. We have too many of the same formats in this city.
Alt is failing in quite a few markets. It neither gets a significant audience nor does it perform well in billings. Same happened with country.

Formats are selected based on the belief that they will attract larger, salable audience segments. Those stations with the "same" formats are all getting much higher ratings and revenue.

So I recorded the whole announcement he made, and the song leading up to it. Could tell it was pre-recorded as I heard a few obvious edits, but regardless. Rarely have I heard a host get that choked up, but it makes total sense. Feel horrible for him, but I hope he has something else lined up. Going to a station in Detroit I think?

Do what WDRE 103.9 did in Philly and go all bets off I say. Air whatever the hell they want for the next two weeks. Hell have a whole hour dedicated to the sounds of toilets flushing. Funny how the host said "we'll still be on the HD stream, but I don't think anyone knows how to work that" which is crazy how accurate that is. HD Radio, a total failure. But that's for another day.

I agree, and have been saying this on multiple threads. All-news has historically been stronger in NYC, being that this is where the format was pioneered, but I doubt it's long-term viability amongst younger listeners.
The format was "pioneered" in 1948 at Radio Reloj in Cuba. Gordon McLendon went for a pre-Castro holiday in Cuba in the later 50's and heard it. By 1959, he was building "Extra News over Los Angeles" on 690 XETRA from Tijuana.

A cathartic moment on the air with Brady announcing it. He knew that this was coming, they said it was announced to them on Friday. He was barely holding back the tears. I know it's business, but it I sympathize with him.
So do I.

Brady concluded his speech by encouraging his listeners to celebrate alternative music during Alt 92.3's remaining days. He then resumed the music by playing "It's the End of the World as We Know It" by R.E.M.

there are 3 or 4 urban stations with dismal ratings, one can take the format and do it right, but is it taboo to flip an urban format for fear of protests...notice a country and rock station bit the dust, the country with better ratings then the urbans.....

He tracks a few other Alt stations still if I remember correctly. So either they'll shuffle him to one of the other stations, or have him track still based in NYC. Bru, Audacy's CHR afternoon host moved to LA to do afternoons on 97.1 AMP/NOW, and has stayed there voicetracking out since Audacy moved KNX to 97.1

They'll almost certainly emphasize the 92.3 dial position with the "1010" AM references gradually de-emphasized and eventually eliminated (with maybe an occasional "you can also hear us at 1010 on your AM dial" reference).
Of course, as WINS listeners move to FM, that will further reduce the attraction of the AM band. Look for additional losses by WCBS (AM) and the band as a whole.

The failure of country, though, was pretty much a New York market anomaly. The format is doing very well elsewhere in both audience and billing, but NY was just too tough a nut to crack, especially in attracting advertising at competitive rates.

"WINS Newsradio 92.3"
KYW makes no mention of 1060 anymore... just "KYW Newsradio" while occasionally adding 103.9 FM

Maybe just WINS News Radio.

They will NOT mention the AM anymore. It's an Audacy thing. They don't mention it in Los Angeles. They don't mention it in Chicago. They don't mention it in Philadelphia. It will likely be WINS Newsradio 92-3 or something like that.

Hint: it is about sales. It is tough to sell country in markets like NYC due to the huge diversity of the population and the total lack of lifestyle compatibility.
