EMF grabs another signal in the area

EMF has purchased WEGO in Concord, NC from 2 B Productions. The station will place "Air 1" on the signal at 1410 AM and translator 98.3. No changes at the moment for other 2 B Productions stations WSTP and WSAT. From Inside Radio.

I don't think EMF bought WEGO. Checking the FCC list of applications the only application for WEGO is a STA to take the station silent.

I noticed that it was off the air when I drove by the transmitter site last night. I don't know who owns the site now. At one time it was owned by CBS. Beasley or Audacy may own it now. They may want to sell that property since they no longer have a station there. WPEG was once located there...

Justification for Silent STA

On December 23, 2022, the license of primary station WEGO’s FM translator, W252DI, Concord, NC, was assigned to a noncommercial educational broadcaster. As the FM translator provided the majority of WEGO’s audience, it was decided to suspend operations while the licensee explores other program alternatives.

EMF doesn't like to buy AMs and if they do end up with one they sell it off pretty quickly. Looks like they only bought the translator and not the AM.

WSAT needs WEGO to reach Charlotte.

They must not agree with you. WE-GO is off the air.

I don't understand why. It can't cost a bunch to operate. It is only 1KW in a small transmitter hut. The power bill can't be much.

Why not simulcast the great 128 and let it run? Or simulcast WSTP.

They did the same nonsense with WSTP for years. Turned it off until the STA ran out. Turned it back on for a few weeks and turned it back off under a new STA.

I don't get it.

Several weeks ago I heard their legal station ID on WSAT. So either they weren't, or they were doing something wrong.

WSAT was off the air last time I checked but its translator was on.

Looks like they applied for the STA on Dec 23rd. They were off the air when I drove by the transmitter site this past Tuesday.

They can't have the translator without an AM. And like I said, that translator won't get very far when another one is 30 miles southeast.

I am not sure what this means.

They sold the translator to EMF. They did not sell the AM. For some reason they decided to take the AM silent. (see post #3 in this thread) They can operate the AM without a translator. They operate WSTP without a translator.

You have this backwards. WSAT is off the air. The translator is still airing the same programming. That is not a translator that has been sold. The situation can only be temporary.

I do not have it backward. 2B Productions sold W252DI. That translator was translating WEGO (1410AM). When the FCC approved the transfer of W252DI from 2B Productions to EMF 2B Productions filed a "Request for Silent Authority of an AM Station Application' with the FCC for WEGO. You can look it up. The file number is 0000205969.

The text of that request is in post #3 in this thread.

WEGO was off the air when I tried to tune in this past Tuesday.

W252DI was on the air with EMF Air-1 programming.

If WSAT (1280AM) is off the air and W277DD is still on the air they are breaking the rules. Part 74.1263 section B states...

An FM booster or FM Translator station rebroadcasting the signal of an AM, FM or LPFM primary station shall not be permitted to radiate during extended periods when signals of the primary station are not being retransmitted. Notwithstanding the foregoing, FM translators rebroadcasting Class D AM stations may continue to operate during nighttime hours only if the AM station has operated within the last 24 hours.

It appears 2B Productions has filed for a construction permit to move W277DD to Granite Quarry. Looks like the frequency will change to 101.7.

You didn't say this was about WEGO. You were responding to my post about WSAT.

That's a problem as one of Charlotte's most popular stations is at 101.9.

I got blocked from that article until I went to a library today but I think closing the private window would have gotten me access, as they haven't figured out, like the McClatchy papers, how to defeat that.

However, it wasn't complete and I informed the editor of the paper, who also wrote the article, and he responded, so a correction should be happening.

WSAT's AM frequency was back today. This just happened to be my first time in the car.

The only reason why these religious groups bother with these little AM stations is so they can get the FM translator. Case in point WAVO 1150 who's AM dial position never gets a mention, just the FM translator dial position.

But I have to wonder how much the translator even helps. the AM signal goes farther, at least during the day.

With only 5 to 10 percent of all radio users still listening to AM, it doesn't matter how far the medium wave signal travels. The station in the 88-108 band will always have more actual listeners.
And yet the EMF programming won't reach people any other way, once you get outside the translator's range.
