Lance Venta's Radio Insight had an article today insofar as what's happening in the wake of Star 102.5's sale to EMF. He noted today that the dominoes could start falling when it comes to shakeups on the Buffalo radio dial. Sadly, the full article is paywalled, so I cannot link to it. But the teaser notes that one of the chains in the area HAS made a move to register domain names. And no, it's NOT Audacy. So we can likely end the fantasy that Star's going to segue to 107.7/104.7 .

What I will say is this: On some level, I'm surprised that it took THIS long for someone in the market to respond...and on another level, I'm not; Buffalo, as a whole, tends to really dither on many matters until it's too late.
 
The Southern Ontario Radio/TV Forum is now talking about this, and some of the posters have deduced that the likely suspects are either...

1. WMSX(96.1 the Breeze)
2. WBUF(Buffalo's Real Rock, 92.9)

And they're the only ones that make sense.

Suspects for what? Format change? The Breeze has fallen into obscurity ever since they ditched the JOY moniker. WBUF is an abysmal mess of a format. Both are expendable. The current Breeze playlist reads like an AC version of JACK. In any event, your thread title is about STAR 102.5 which Town Square does not own...

I think Cass may not know that in a bankruptcy, the creditors are first in line. The owners (also called "shareholders" in a corporation) are the last in line.

It's the equivalent of looking for change under the cushions and in the crevasses of the couch. Audacy needs money to pay debt service, not that the sale of a single radio property or the Atlas portfolio will entirely stave off the wolves. It's merely a means of buying time. As has been noted earlier in this thread, it's also an attempt to preserve equity ... which, given Audacy's share price, is amusing. But when you hold 22% of the company's stock, it comes down to protecting your stake in the company.

The more that is uncovered about this debacle, the more it looks like an MBA course in how not to run a publicly held company, broadcast or otherwise. Wall Street and the world of finance is an ego-driven and fiercely intellectual trench; a casino requiring brains, balls and sometimes, brawn in order to play the game. David Field has become a laughing stock among his peer competitors, but that's small recompense for the men and women in the trenches who've been RIF'd and cast off as he and his corner office cohorts try to avert the inevitable and put more lipstick on a pig.

EXACTLY.

Why would Townsquare register all those domain names unless they're planning to flip one of the stations to fill the hot AC void when Star becomes K-Love? (And, BTW, in its own way it IS about 102.5 and how the Buffalo radio dial will start changing once Star exits.)

The Breeze has been multiple variations of AC for many years. It wouldn't be Earth shaking news if they change their name and playlist again. It's almost June, so they can always flip to "All Xmas Muzak". I think you overestimate the importance of STAR. It's a generic format that won't be missed...

And then again, it may be a contingency plan that may not be acted upon. "Break glass in case of..." Time will tell. Frankly, for as much as his posts sometimes nettle readers on this board, 'bolt makes a point. Then again, Star, The Breeze, Hot AC ... it's all about women ... a demographic about which none of the gentlemen who post here have a gnat's worth of knowledge. Ahem.

How about a hot-hits format with flame-throwing, deep-voiced,-post-hitting, boss jocks and a JAM jingle package like KIIS/LA, WHYT/Detroit or WPLJ/NY had in the mid-80s? Call it "96X" or "Sex 96"!

And switch back to carts.
 
Multiple stations including those owned by Audacy have already announced plans or have actually made moves already in Memphis. Im beginning to wonder since no one in Buffalo has anounced a move yet or made a move yet if anyone will actually change to fill the hole Star will leave.

Or, as I said before, this is just a symptom of living in Buffalo...which tends to dither about a lot of things and puts them off until it's way too late to act upon it.

I don't carry water for the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce but I stopped to say that Buffalo is far from a backwater. We're not LA or NYC, and we don't pretend to be. We're kinda sorta like Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Cleveland (well-aware that they're larger markets.) Yes, the market does at times roll slow(ly). That noted, there may be a lot of moving parts to this deal which impact how other operators in the market progress in a deliberate manner. It will all shake out in its proper time. In the meantime, speculatin' is coin of the realm, so have at it.
