DFW, Texas --- Sangean ATS-909X

Last night, 9/3/2023 at 10:00pm, local 620-KTNO was off the air for some reason. I was able to hear XENK Mexico City with a good signal and some fading, playing 50's music (Elvis, Chuck Berry). ID as Radio 6 20 and Cadena Rasa. Another station in Spanish underneath, but not able to identify. Nulling XENK, I heard WJDX Jackson, MS weak to fair with conservative talk and R. Rebelde occasionally under // 1180.

"DXing is like a box of chocolates. Ya never know what you're gonna get." With apologies to Forrest Gump. Conditions were good this morning, so I was able to snag a new one. WTPR, 710 from Paris, TN. Fair signal alone, no trace of WOR or WDSM. 750 watts ND with oldies ""I wanna Hold Your Hand", "Louie Louie" and a couple positive IDs. A little after 4AM CDT on the C Crane Skywave.

Dayton, NV Sangean DT-200X

1380

Night I got KRKO Everett, WA
Day: KTKZ Sacranemto with Very Weak Signal
Evening: KLPZ Parker, AZ before they go to Night Pattren
Nicely done. Try 1460. How well does KENO do in Reno? I know there's the adjacent 1450 nearby. I wonder if KUTI makes it down there regularly, or KION.

Just a SRS alert to some here, from a catch that stunned me this morning. 7:05 or so.
See, some ten years ago, broad afternoon daylight, WVBF 1530 from some dual-city place near Cape Cod was coming in for :45 minutes in a basement 290 miles west of them. Sold-out hour of time bought by some Vitamin E cult.
Obvious daytime-skip. I wasn't gonna buy any Vitamin E until the station identfied

Yet, same GE SR 2, outside on the breakfast patio, came a pretty clear ID and some local news from WVBF. I had thought the previous reception was a one-off fluke, but well, there they were again.
No sign of WCKY.
Most of the enhanced SRS signals were starting to get those frizzy, exhausted last-gasps at that time, but if WVBF came in here, it should get out further west for DXers with good radios and less severe hangovers, no ? Give it a try!

Yesterday, I was hearing something on the FM:

90.5 was coming in as KSJS I'm pretty sure, but some other station playing Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer" kept breaking through. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an ID, so I may never know what station it was.

A safe assumption is that it was some other near-ish station, or perhaps a translator, but I don't know for sure.

Thoughts?

KVHS Concord CA?

Excellent conditions thesee past several days on the AM band. A few little tidbits from my location northwest of Chicago....

530: R. Enciclopedia In for the first time in at least a year.
560: WIND has been all alone here at night, even nulled. Monday morning a talk show was audible underneath. KWTO?
620: CKRM underneath WTMJ. First time in quite a while
690: WQNO Had been absent for about six months,
860: WSON managed to be on top of CJBC most of the time
900: Another one that had been largely MIA: CHML with a good signal
1070: KHMO blowing out WTSO

Tonight, by chance, I came across KRLA 870 "The Answer". I see that it runs 3,000 watts at night, so I don't think it would usually reach this far north so clearly. Perhaps they were still on day power when I found it (about 9:30 ish PM Pacific).

At any rate, I'll consider it a new catch since I don't recall picking it up before (870 is usually empty). Can anyone confirm if they are indeed on day power? If not, then It must be a very interesting fluke.

Third straight SRS on the patio with breakfast; third day with one newie.
That was 1120 WKQW Oil City PA (sounded like a dual COL, though). ID @ 7AM, and Fox Sports. 1000 w omni, day.
Got a few re-logs, too. One was WTEM 980 from DC, all over the closer WILK Wilkes-Barre. 'The Team' (groan) finally IDed after a thoroughly inane, interminable and pointless 3-guy yuckfest about the crucial Maryland-Charlotte football game Saturday. If this is what Audacy considers compelling morning drive programming in the nation's #9 market, no wonder they get a 0.3 in the ratings. That's a disgrace for 50,000 watts at that dial spot.

I've yet to try exact-midday DX at that big, quiet BPO Lodge field a few blocks west. I should think that's the time of day when some close unheards are on the peak of their groundwaves. I'd wanna bring along a cassette deck for taping though. If I can only find a battery operated one in the confusion here. Or maybe Home Depot carries one of those 1700 foot extension cords. A cordless one would be even better.

I haven't been DXing much in a good while, with conditions poor the few times I've checked. Last night I took the XHDATA D-808 out to the front yard for a few minutes around 11pm and was rewarded with my first new logging in 3 months, KFSW 1650 in Ft Smith, AR. I tuned in just in time to hear a clear ID and Christian music. I've previously heard 4 other stations on 1650, odd since KFSW is the closest station of them to my location.

At any rate, I hope this is a sign of autumn and the start of DX season (although it doesn't feel like autumn, with today's high of 102).

9/6/23 Kenosha, WI near Lake Michigan, about 8 PM CDT. While waiting to pick up my daughter from play rehearsal, I had 10 minutes to do a quick FM bandscan. Conditions seemed dead; nothing unusual popping up. Stopped on weak but readable signal on 89.9, assuming one of about 74 translators. Nope- WCBU Peoria, NPR 26,500 Watts. About 160 miles. I don't recall the last time I heard ANYTHING from Peoria.

WBNQ 101.5 from Bloomington, IL is an occasional tropo visitor here in Crystal Lake from the same general area as Peoria. Distance is about 130 miles. Not as impressive as your excellent catch, but illustrates that Central Illinois signals do sometimes get out over the mostly flat terrain. I've heard Peoria a few times here...As well as UHF TV channels from Peoria during the analog days.

Before low-powered FM cluttered the dial, WBNQ was a semi-regular here with the indoor antenna set just so. I never put an FM stick on my tower, but I'd bet it would have been in most of the time from 104 miles. Loved the all-hits format.

Back on the 15th of August I was able to id 106.7 KNKI Show Low, AZ via meteor scatter. A new log.

I've had Show Low, AZ via Sporadic-E but not that far up the band.

Was lucky ID with "Horne Auto Center" being clearly audible.

WBNQ was a good listen. My oldest son went to Illinois State in Bloomington, and WBNQ was a go-to for me down there. Sister station of WJBC/1230....The ultimate small-market cash cow!
