CBS owned CW affiliates to drop CW affiliation and go independent

Most Likely Not because it is a weak signal in some areas so they have to get cable to get it from WTVG.2 WLAJ.2, WEYI.2/WBSF or from WDCW on DirecTV
If They are Lucky in Canada near Detroit, They Can Access WPIX and KTLA or even WPCH

Actually PrevueTalk, WTVG 13.2 via DTV antenna can be received in Michigan (Detroit, Ann Arbor, etc.) and Windsor, Ontario, but it's not available on cable. Also, Northville, MI gets WLAJ 53.2 for CW programming via DTV antenna, but it too is not available on cable.

That is, only if they have an antenna that is capable of carrying those stations without reception problems.

But you're right, WDCW can be received via DirecTV

where can they catch the cw on cable

if not should they catch it on cbc, ctv, global, city and/or ctv2

That's right, viewers will need a strong DTV antenna to receive WTVG 13.2 over the air in the Detroit, MI area. I checked the cable lineups within the Detroit area outside of DirecTV, Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV on tvtv.us and saw that there's no alternate CW affiliate.

Also, Windsor, ON cable systems get WPIX 11/New York, KTLA 5/Los Angeles and WPCH 17/Atlanta for CW programming.

This is silly. Part of the affiliation contract between any network (including CW) and a station such as WTVG includes a clause that they can't enter into an agreement to be carried on a cable system outside their own market, because they don't have the rights to the network there.

So no Detroit cable system is suddenly going to start carrying WTVG 13.2 or WBSF or anything else. If there's no CW affiliate in the Detroit market, there will be no CW for most Detroit viewers until someone picks up the affiliation.

And you'd need a very good rooftop antenna to get the WTVG signal in most of the Detroit market unless you're downriver or in Monroe County. It doesn't exist in the rest of the market, period.

As for Windsor, I don't think WADL was on cable there anyway, so if viewers cared about CW, they'd already have had WPIX on cable.

Here is an interesting one and it's meant to get readers to find the streaming service that carries CW content in areas without a CW affiliation like the CW app on newer TV's.

Hulu, YouTube TV and CW app are mentioned if someone in Detroit is really looking for CW content.

Who is going to pick up the CW Affiliation now?

is detroit pulling a MNTV extinction event like in boston and miami

No PrevueTalk, Detroit won't be pulling a MyNetworkTV extinction event, MyNetworkTV will remain on WADL 38, and also, I just found out today that beginning on November 13, WMYD 20 will be carrying programming from The CW, including LIV Sports and One Magnificent Morning.

That fast! Guess Scripps had a change of heart.

My guesses for where the CW goes in each market:
Philadelphia: WPHL 17 (Nexstar owned)
Atlanta: WPCH 17 or WATL 36
San Francisco: KRON 4 (Nexstar owned)
Seattle: KONG 16 or KZJO 22
Tampa-St. Petersburg: WTTA 38 (Nexstar owned)
Detroit: WMYD 20
Sacramento: KQCA 58 or a subchannel of KTXL 40 (KTXL is owned by Nexstar)
Pittsburgh: WPNT 22
Hmm..looks like the Seattle guess was way off. Make that a second order of crow.
