CBS owned CW affiliates to drop CW affiliation and go independent

Even though this is related to the Nexstar/CW News it needed its own thread

“The affected stations are WPSG Philadelphia, WUPA Atlanta, KBCW San Francisco, KSTW Seattle, WTOG Tampa-St. Petersburg, WKBD Detroit, KMAX Sacramento and WPCW Pittsburgh.”

Looks like CBS could be the next station group jumping on the train of picking up live local sports.
It's an exciting time to look at new opportunities to add local programming, including live sports, and shows from across the Paramount Global brands.

And I will put even money that all eight of them will be announcing, and promoting all summer coming Daytime and Prime-Time Newscasts.
Maybe the KCAL (channel 9 Los Angeles) model, large blocks of news in mornings, noon, 4pm and prime time, and syndicated stuff in other hours. Smaller markets using CBSN to supplement. (KRON4 in the SFBA has a similar model.)

Have a feeling we'll see soon-to-be non-CW affiliates in CBS O&O markets showing news from their streaming news service CBS News "insert city here" to prop that up, especially since they've been really keen on local news with the station groupwide rebrand & the launching of a 24/7 news streaming service in their local markets. In the shorter term, wouldn't be surprised, like I saw in NYC when CW came about & WWOR ditched the UPN branding, CBS-owned CW stations ditch "CW" in their station branding ASAP.

Well those soon to be Independent TV stations can get OTA TV rights to their local pro team(s) to fill air time.

Deadline implies that the decision was in part due to the CW carrying LIV Golf and the CBS owned stations CW refusing to carry it

Not shocking to hear that KMAX and KBCW had to drop the CW affiliation after refusing to air LiV Golf because it violated the CBS sports contract.

But in Seattle, Tampa and Atlanta Paramount owned CW affiliates are not connected to the main CBS Owned station. Where this is going is uncertain given that they cannot just promote themselves as CBS News "Your City Here" in places like Seattle, Tampa and Atlanta.

Tegna owns WTSP while Gray owns WANF and WPCH. WPCH is my considerable choice to replace WUPA

here's the list of non-CW/CBS stations owned by Paramount under the "CBS News & Stations" umbrella:
KTXA, Dallas-Fort Worth, TX (never had a afflation to CW or MyNetworkTV as it went back to Independent status when UPN folded).
KCAL, Los Angeles, CA (never was affiliated with any network at all).
WLNY, New York City, NY (never was affiliated with any network at all).
WBXI-CD, Indianapolis, IN (has a affiliation to Start TV, it previously was affiliated with Decades and MTV Tres before that).
WSBK, Boston, MA (this is one of 2 MyNetworkTV affiliated owned by Paramount Global that dropped their MyNetworkTV affiliation)
WBFS, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, FL (this is the other of 2 MyNetworkTV affiliated stations owned by Paramount Global that dropped their affiliation to MyNetworkTV).

Not unless Fox can pull some maneuvers to get themselves enough room under the 39% limit. As far as I undertstand, Fox is at 38%.

My guesses for where the CW goes in each market:
Philadelphia: WPHL 17 (Nexstar owned)
Atlanta: WPCH 17 or WATL 36
San Francisco: KRON 4 (Nexstar owned)
Seattle: KONG 16 or KZJO 22
Tampa-St. Petersburg: WTTA 38 (Nexstar owned)
Detroit: WMYD 20
Sacramento: KQCA 58 or a subchannel of KTXL 40 (KTXL is owned by Nexstar)
Pittsburgh: WPNT 22
