I still think it was/is a good idea
It might have been ... years ago.
But ever since the pandemic, I have noticed a steep decline in such get-togethers. And that decline in popularity had already started going downhill before then. Going back to my reference to the old Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, we had been experiencing a trend where each luncheon was less attended than the previous one, unless the honoree or one of the guest speakers on the dais was extremely popular; the last one I remember where we used the entire banquet hall at the Sportsman's Lodge was when Vin Scully was present to honor Al Michaels (and that was back in 2017, which feels like an eternity ago now).
A lot of people now use Facebook as a "meeting place" of sorts, although I really don't get the appeal. But it must be said that, compared to even 25 years ago, people move around more, sometimes at distances far from where their friend "base" is (and that "base" has become more scattered as well).
Zoom meetings have also filled in some of the emotional need for such gatherings, and one can be anywhere with an Internet connection to participate, but personally I do enough of that for business purposes and have no burning desire to do more for leisure.
I don't fault James for the idea and I appreciate his enthusiasm, but it has no better chance of happening now than when he previously proposed it, hence my polite suggestion that it be permanently dropped from consideration.
