WGN to add WABC-based show "The Other Side Of Midnight"

The FCC has never mandated what programming a station has to air. There is no money to be made programming in the “wee hours of the morning.”
There are so many non terrestrial radio choices today that it is not stunning that stations air the same programming. The programming is live,at least

Incredibly stunning that you can tune up and down the AM dial in the wee hours of the morning and hear virtually the same thing on what used to be 50kW "Clear Channel" stations and hear Red Eye Radio on virtually all of them. What ever happened to having a responsibility to holding a license for such large stations but showing zero responsibility to what used to be known and acceptable broadcast standards for your city of license.

Pretty sad.
Well red eye radio just got dropped earlier this year on kdka so Wls is probably their biggest station they arent on many 50 kw stations any more. As crazy as it sounds I think frank moranos show might be on more 50 kw stations.

Making money has to be an issue but so are standards in broadcasting. The money argument is very tiring. Used to have to prove every three years what you were doing for the community of license in order to get renewed for another 3 years. All these stations are just being echo chambers for the syndicated programs.

So the excuse is sell your sole and the future of your country just to make money. Really sounds like a good plan!

I was always a fan of Clark Howard and Bruce Williams. Dave Ramsey selling books and courses to people who already said they were in debt always rubbed me the wrong way.
I believe Clark Howard and Bruce Williams were carried with part of their breaks reserved for their spots. Ramsey, OTOH, buys the entire block.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

WGN had a history of carrying great over-night programing with Franklyn McCormack, Eddie Schwartz, Steve King & Jonnie Putman and Nick Digilio. With the local programing breaking overnight news, severe weather and traffic events were covered which is all but lost the the syndicated talkers. Nexstar could have continued this with Nick Digilio but chose to fire him and replace with syndicated talkers Rollye James and Jim Bohannon.

James had a past history of suggesting that Bill Clinton be taken out. She seems to be staying clear of controversy for the most part but occasionally strays into conservative politics. Bohannon did have past ties to Chicago from WCFL in the late 70s and early 80s and used to sub for Larry King. Over time he became a conservative fire brand that was virtually impossible to listen to.

Bruce Williams was carried in Chicago by WMAQ for a time after dropping country and before going all news. I think his claim to fame was bring Bob Brinker to national fame. Otherwise his show was relatively boring and disinteresting. Clark Howard just another dull syndicated talker.

Nexstar is a soulless blob of a company that owns a lot of TV stations. WGN is the lone radio station in their portfolio and it really shows now.

But WGN is also an AM station with an aging audience that is nothing like it was 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. Expecting them to be live-local 24/7 is a tall order.

John Records Landecker's comments from his Facebook page on views expressed like mine and your's:

"Have I ever ranted on Facebook? Well I am now. I am sick and tired of the comments about WGN when ever the Chicago ratings are posted. "Oh its not what it used to be'I stopped listening when (fill in the blank)". I really like the posts that say they never listen anymore and then comment on something that happened on the air. I don't know if all off you radio experts know the current state of AM radio these days but WGN is an exception. First of all we are not a part of some oversized bankrupt broadcast group. WGN is the only radio station owned by Nex Star media. That is a very big deal. And this constant bitching about the overnight show. Get over it. You know you're not up then anyway.

I'm not done. There was a post with the WGN and WLS ratings in the 25-54 yr old age group. I cannot tell you how misleading this is. Ever since I have been in broadcasting there has been an obsession with this demo. I mean just about every station AM/FM did't matter. The idea that WGN, an AM station , would be programming to 25-54 is utter nonsense and to use the ratings of this group as a measure of the stations success is totally unfair and misleading. I 've got some news for you. There are people who are older than 54! No really. In fact some of my best friends are over 54. As a matter of fact I know some people who are even older than 64!

Radio stations are in the business of making money and WGN has found a business model that does that and in doing so they have maintained a fully staffed news department and hired some heritage Chicago talent who busts their ass to put on informative and entertaining programming. So in closing if you don't have anything nice to say..shut the F up".

With all due respect to John, there is a reason why the 25–54 demo is the "money demo". It's just a way of life.

Plus any reasonable assessment of WGN would tell you that they are a shell of what they had been 20 years ago. The constant makeovers every five years or so withered their identity away.

Plus the fact that many guest on C2C either are or seem like informercial/paid spots as well. Then add in Noory's notable decline and high commercial load.

I can't argue with most of what you say, except as a long ago PD, I went on Premiere's network show clock page, and it appears to me the in show spot load is the same as when my stations carried the show. The local station could be jamming more in by running less news ... or do iHeart stations still use that gizmo that allowed them to squeeze in more spots?

Bob Brinker always mentioned it was Jeanne Strauss that discovered him and Maurice Tonic (sp?) that broke him nationally. I don't recall him ever discussing the people mentioned here.
