SBS Buys KROI for $7.5 million

SBS will look like complete fools if they fail to meet a contracted closing date for the third time, more than a year after the original target.

Still no sign of yet another amended APA being filed with the FCC, so maybe this long saga finally comes to an end. Sticking with my 55% chance of a new format on 92.1 for Thanksgiving Day.
If they don't spend a week stunting with previews of the music and jocks like they did in Central Florida. Although this format will likely be less jock-centric than the Florida stations, which take cues from the Puerto Rico stations.

Praise still going on KROI as of 1pm today. Been listening to their local midday show, and no mention whatsoever about any impending change on 92.1. Oddly the fill-in local host consistently refers to the station as “Praise 92.1” instead of the “Praise 102.1 HD-2” branding that has been in place the past 18 months.

No sign of any amended APA filing with the FCC. No filing for a call change, either.

Keep in mind that the flip of divestiture sibling KTHT occurred around 6pm the day of closing (10/31/2023) so still time left today.

Strange things is that I'm hearing sbs wont make the change till Rauls Non-Compete is over and that wont be for another 2-3 weeks
That's not so strange, is it? If I understand correctly, that could mean they close the acquisition today, stunt for the next 3 weeks or so, then launch the new format.

@lanceventa do you know already what the name of the station will be?
The one thing I've learned in the two decades of tracking domain registrations, is that it nearly always ends up being the first brand reserved with any later ones being decoys because of their poor planning.

If that is the case I would go back to my July 30 Domain Insight report, but remember anyone sharing that paywalled info anywhere online is a terms of service violation and will lose access to both RadioInsight subscription content and be banned from here.

Presumably with a year to prepare, they should be ready to do something be it launch or stunting shortly after closing.

See my post #662 earlier in this thread. Appears December 14 is the one-year anniversary of Brindis leaving KLTN.

7pm and Praise is still going on 92.1. I suspect nothing is going to happen today, just another episode in this long, bizarre story.

I guess we can only assume the sale was completed. I remember when Liberman launched Tv and Radio they had media kits out in the street's way in advance but for this station, they are really keeping every very tight .

If SBS did indeed close on KROI yesterday, it makes the continued carriage of the Praise format even more strange.

In its purchase of KROI SBS was just buying a stick, not any programming or intellectual property. The home of the Praise format is Urban One’s KMJQ HD-2, and is branded as such. During Sugarland Station Trust’s oversight of KROI Praise was used as program filler under an agreement with UO.

Although legally separate, SST was essentially a puppet for UO to temporarily keeps things legal under the ownership caps. That should have gone on for only three months or so, as it did with KTHT before closing the sale with EMF. Of course SBS’ inability to pay for KROI has dragged things out to this point.

So if SBS now officially has the keys to KROI, what are they doing airing Praise, which is still a UO format on another station? Who is getting the money from its advertising? Is SBS paying UO for airing the format? Remember the use of Praise on 92.1 gives UO a sixth FM outlet in the market, above the cap.

Of course if the sale failed to close yesterday nothing has changed, but where is the amended APA filing, unless it was submitted at the last minute and hasn’t showed up online yet?

If the deal actually did close I would expect a Notice of Consummation to show up tomorrow 11/29 or Monday 12/2 at the latest.

This has been a bizarre journey with the KROI sale.😫😖
