If SBS did indeed close on KROI yesterday, it makes the continued carriage of the Praise format even more strange.
In its purchase of KROI SBS was just buying a stick, not any programming or intellectual property. The home of the Praise format is Urban One’s KMJQ HD-2, and is branded as such. During Sugarland Station Trust’s oversight of KROI Praise was used as program filler under an agreement with UO.
Although legally separate, SST was essentially a puppet for UO to temporarily keeps things legal under the ownership caps. That should have gone on for only three months or so, as it did with KTHT before closing the sale with EMF. Of course SBS’ inability to pay for KROI has dragged things out to this point.
So if SBS now officially has the keys to KROI, what are they doing airing Praise, which is still a UO format on another station? Who is getting the money from its advertising? Is SBS paying UO for airing the format? Remember the use of Praise on 92.1 gives UO a sixth FM outlet in the market, above the cap.
Of course if the sale failed to close yesterday nothing has changed, but where is the amended APA filing, unless it was submitted at the last minute and hasn’t showed up online yet?
If the deal actually did close I would expect a Notice of Consummation to show up tomorrow 11/29 or Monday 12/2 at the latest.
This has been a bizarre journey with the KROI sale.😫😖
