WABC: Morano, Sliwa, Weiner off 770

WABC has indeed pulled Frank Morano's "The Other Side of Midnight", along with shows hosted by Curtis Sliwa and Anthony Weiner off the air–at least locally. A few on this board predicted this very outcome.

As mentioned in previous posts, the three hosts are candidates in New York City's 2025 municipal elections. Morano and Weiner are seeking seats in the City Council while Sliwa is running his second campaign for Mayor, this time as the presumptive Republican nominee (without a primary challenger, for now).

However, all three will continue to be heard on their shows for national audiences along WABC's Red Apple Audio Network (both on-air and via stream). Morano's overnight program is also carried by a few big stations including WCCO in Minneapolis, WGN in Chicago, and KMOX in St. Louis. (Morano didn't mention these affiliates in a FB post announcing the move, which he found about on short notice.)

More from the Cats' Mouthpiece: Why WABC listeners won't hear Frank Morano, Curtis Sliwa, or Anthony Weiner on the air waves anymore

I think anyone who is a candidate for office should not be hosting a radio show. Nearby in New Jersey, WKXW has also taken Bill Spadea, Republican candidate for governor, off the morning show.

But the title of the WABC article shouldn't be "Why Listeners Won't Hear Morano, Sliwa or Weiner Anymore." If they lose, they could come back.

I'd amend that a bit. Someone who is DJ'ing on Lite, reading liner cards and weather reports, and then intro'ing the next song, they can continue that while they run for Town Council, NYC City Council, Mayor or POTUS. I seriously doubt it would have any material effect. (As long as that person doesn't get wise and start slipping in political references.) Same with CBS-FM or Hot 97 or Q104-3, or 1010WINS for that matter. But talk formats just are different, and provide too much opportunity to bend the rules, mention campaign positions, disparage opponents in oblique way, even without overtly mentioning the position they're running for or the status of their campaign. In that case they made their bed and the price is (at minimum) taking an unpaid leave of absence, or worst case, tendering their resignations and hoping the job's still open if their run is not successful.

I was shocked when I turned on WABC Radio and "Curtis Sliwa, Frank Morano and Anthony Weiner were no longer on the "Air". I still heard "Nancy Sliwa" on the Animal Show". Personally, I think they made the Station and I cannot imagine who will replace them! They were all "entertaining and informative" and I do miss them! Can anyone tell me how I can still hear them on the Radio if they are still on some network?

All three are running for political office and legally cannot broadcast right now unless WABC wanted to provide equal time to the other candidates running against them.

To piggyback on Lance's comment:

As I mentioned in my original post, Morano, Sliwa and Weiner are continuing their programs on the Red Apple Audio Network–WABC's in-house streaming and terrestrial syndication platform. They just can't air on 770 AM for the foreseeable future.

I was surprised tuning in from LA on Saturday Night and hearing some strange host. How will I be updated on Happy the elephant in the Bronx Zoo?

That’s a shame I was hoping Curtis would be off the all together until after the NYC Mayoral election

Do you think Governor Murphy got an unfair advantage at those Daily COVID 19 Briefings. When He got to answer questions About his campaign during the Briefings ? Shouldn’t his opponent been offered equal time at those briefings or on Youtube ?

A lot of votes are cast just on name recognition, so your DJ would have to not use a name or at least use an air name that has not been publicly associated with his real name. But the issue is not what the affect of somebody doing airshifts while running for public office. The issue is it's against the law (Article 315 of the Communications Act of 1934 as amended).
