ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live

The crazy part in all of this is that when I first read that Nexstar was pulling Jimmy Kimmel’s show I thought wait one second KTLA, KRON, KSWB, WPIX are not being hit by the FCC until I realized that the ABC affiliates owned by Nexstar are WTNH Hartford, WTEN Albany New York, WRIC Richmond Virginia, WHTM Harrisburg Pennsylvania are some of the ones affected in pre-empting the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

I was completely thinking Disney owned ABC affiliates especially KABC-TV given that Disney’s main office is in Burbank and the Jimmy Kimmels show was filmed in the LA area.
What is your point? Impressing us that you know all of these sets of call letters? Or are you just taking us through your convoluted thought process to arrive at.........again, exactly what is your point?

If what Kimmel said on Monday was so bad, why did everyone wait until Wednesday to respond?
Someone at Nexstar finally figured it out, and are being keyboard warriors because they really want their deal with Tegna to go through. It sounds like Nexstar poked the bear, not the FCC
Exactly. Nexstar "pulled the show" (depending on ones interpretation of events) because they are begging for Carr and Trusty to remove all ownership caps so they can get Tegna outright. This was simple craven political posturing on Perry Sook's part.

It also shows how untenable it is for ABC to continue to operate as a network. If Nexstar tomorrow wanted to drop World News Tonight on all of their ABC affiliates in favor of NewsNation simulcasts, that effectively cancels World News Tonight. What really died tonight was the network-affilate model that governed local television for decades.

The president wants Fallon next:

“Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT.”

Ohhh yeah. All of this, not some, has Perry’s name written all over it. The FCC was fine with this (pictured), but all of a sudden they’re not ok with what was said on Monday - two days later?

If ABC really wanted to play hardball could they have pulled affiliation from Nexstar unless they cared JKL.
Where would they go in those markets? Same with when ABC's groupwide affiliation deal with Sinclair ends next year. It's highly probable that you'll see ABC simply leave OTA in those markets in favor of Hulu and Disney+, along with FASTs like ABC News Now.

It would hurt Nexstar to lose their biggest affiliation.

After Kimmel’s suspension was announced, The Onion’s Ben Collins wrote, “It's becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment."

Collins is absolutely correct about the result of hyperconsolidation, and some of us in this forum have been hammering at the negative consequences of this for a long time. Collins goes on to call it a market opportunity. It's unclear if he'll take up the challenge, but one thing is clear: All corporate-owned media in the U.S. is bending the knee to the authoritarian regime, and it can no longer dependably serve over half the country's population.

While shifts were already underway in the way Americans consume media, I believe what we're seeing now will turn out to be the catalyst for an as-yet unknown new media model to fill the vacuum.

Tonight, Wednesday September 17, while ABC ran a rerun of Celebrity Family Feud at 11:35PM, In Boston, WCVB Channel 5 carried an extended newscast followed by a rerun of its local news magazine show Chronicle, thus not carrying the ABC feed.
