1110 New Format

You're right, I didn't think of it that way.
Here in San Diego where I'm at, iHeart has two conservative talkers. KOGO, which is very popular (top 10), and KLSD The Patriot which is all syndicated talk, near the bottom ratings wise, but costs almost nothing to operate. Together, they do well, and more importantly better meet the needs of advertisers, as The Patriot clears their syndicated talk for national advertising accounts.

That'd be nice. As I said before and got in a hurry doing so, so my mind ran faster than my fingers LOL, I grew up with Hello Henry, first hearing him back when the old 'BIG at 1470 in Greensboro ran him, then when they took him off there (Never found out why, as an elementary school kid), listened to him on 'BT, even calling him several times from the Greensboro and Shelby metros, during the kids monthly hour. Wow, sorry for the run-on sentence. I used to stay up late on Friday nights, since I didn't have school the next day and especially enjoyed his OTR features. He played Sorry, Wrong Number from Suspense, every October 31. From time to time, he'd play an Amos 'N Andy show and an Arthur Smith and his Crackerjacks show, only heard him talk about playing the latter, but for some reason, didn't hear them 'til some years later, but I'm really rambling now LOL.

Henry left WBIG for WBT, not sure what year. Both were owned by Jefferson Pilot.
Yeah, that's about the size of it. Came in here in KY, around 4 Slow Time a little and should-a-recorded it, but of course, I didn't, thinking it'd come in better later. Nah, it didn't.

Likely before the time of day (it changes every month) when 1110 WBT goes directional.

Re: Henry leaving, sorry, I was referring to after he had left 'BIG for 'BT. For a while, 'BIG carried him with their own spots, that's when I first heard him, back in about '85 or '86. Didn't know they went directional, that's probably why I lost them.

How did it show up with the logo and ID on your car radio? WBT is not transmitting HD Radio, unless maybe in its very limited "ballgame" mode which only transmits RDS-like data, not digital audio.
That is a feature in newer car radios. I believe it is tied to the HD Radio Artist Experience. The radio in my 2025 Ford Explorer shows the logos of AM stations even though they are not transmitting HD. It also shows logos for FM stations not in HD.

I wondered about that myself. I am thinking that such radios may have some kind of data bank within them, for station ID information and even logos, either that, or they gain access to some online database that contains this information. Anybody know?

It's an online database, and there are several of them, which is sometimes a challenge for stations trying to make sure that what's showing up on the screen is what they want to be showing up on the screen. It's one thing to have direct control over what you're actually transmitting; it's a different story when you're at the mercy of someone else's data.

Xperi is trying to address some of those issues, and it's vital for any station that cares how it shows up on screen to make sure it's registered properly with Xperi (it's free, and quick!). But there are other databases too and no universal portal to update them all at once. Just another way radio lost a little more control over its presentation without even realizing what was happening.

My Toyota radio uses Gracenote data to display the radio station logos based upon GPS location, but then when the RDS info has a strong enough signal it will defer to that information being transmitted directly through the radio station signal. The HD locks on when the signal is strong enough. I am not sure exactly how all this works. But on Kiss 95.1 for example the station logo is displayed, as well as the name and picture of the artist performing the song being played, and the name of the song. All this info seems to come from the RDS being transmitted directly from the radio station signal. But if the RDS signal is lost, it just defers to the 95.1 logo based upon the GPS location. So it appears a combination of GPS data from Gracenote until the direct signal from the station displays their own data from their RDS.

But back to topic, how many more days will we be subject to the musical interlude on 1110 before a new format is revealed? So far nobody on air has said anything, and it all appears to be very hush, hush at the moment.

I know. They were still running the lounge music and announcements this morning.

Checked 1110 this morning, still stunting the move to 107.9. They could be still stunting over the weekend, but my guess they are getting their programming ready behind the scenes. Maybe we will know next week, as it gets expensive running their 50kw transmitter with no billable programming.

They may just be trying to build buzz, either that, or something has gone wrong and they are just stalling.

They may also be trying to push stragglers over to 107.9. There would have to be people who have their radios preset to 1110 and may not even be aware of the transition.

If Panthers win Saturday, it goes WFNZ hybird-cast (mix of local & ESPN) to catch a week or two of sports buzz ... otherwise a WBT hybrid (mornings & pm simulcast - then "other" conservative talk).

My expectation is that 1110 will run mostly syndicated Conservative Talkers to flank the local lineup on 107.9...

Most of the Premiere syndicated shows such as are not cleared in Charlotte. By agreeing to clear the Premiere lineup such as Glenn Beck, Clay Travis & Buck Sexton, and Sean Hannity, which are only on small stations surrounding Charlotte at the moment, Radio One may have prevented iHeart from launching their own completing Talker on FM in the market to pair with 94.5 Greensboro and 106.1 Raleigh. This way iHeart/Premiere gets the best of both worlds. They clear their syndication in a missing Top 25 market and don't need to eliminate one of their existing stations to do so.
Thank you, Lance! I predicted this nearly a month ago:

And I too noticed they brought in that jabroni Tony Katz out of Indy to give him late evenings. Levin will return on 1110, plus Hannity, Beck and Buck and Sexton (and hopefully Jimmy Failla, too!)

I heard the stock instrumental music on WBT this morning and thought it was a "technical difficulties" filler covering for the loss of program audio, until I realized the promo messages only mention 107.9 FM.
Some may be wondering what the lounge type songs are in the loop programming. After I uploaded audio of this YouTube served me a (permissible) list of copyrighted songs, and here they are:

Here is just over an hour of WBT's "Lounge Music" filler format, as received early this morning via skywave here in central NJ, on a Sansui TU-S77AMX wideband synchronous detector tuner:

There are a few selections they play over and over again, but there is some variety in the playlist.

A legal ID is at 17:23 in the recording.
