10 AM on 96.9, and...

80s-90s-00s?

If I tune in to 96.9 on Fri and hear Bon Jovi a la the Hahbah... :)

It does strike me as very odd that no one is play 80s-90s top 40 music, as well as a chunk of 70s top 40. But, hey, those listeners only buy houses and cars and stuff for their kids; no big expenses there, right? Don't tell me that Madison Avenue wants to shape the preferences of a seventeen-year-old for what mortgage company they will use.

ROR has the 70s top 40 at least, or classic hits mostly from 70s (no Manilow, Carpenters, John
Denver tho)

just played (mostly 70s)
Aerosmith
Bowie
Stones
Rod Stewart
Foreigner
Dobie Gray
John Mellencamp
Tom Petty
Beatles (wow, a 60s tune Can't Buy Me Love)
Dire Straits
Elton John
Springsteen

WRKO will have to step up to the plate now, since they are now the only talk station in Boston. And I know that they haven't since they've shuffled their morning lineup around a lot recently.

Power 96.9 doesn't sound like a name for an oldies station. Is that a stunt, too?

maybe the hours-long experimental droning noise on 90.3 is a decades long stunt. WZBC finally launching in 2013?

I don't know too much about this market, but wouldn't Urban be good for that market? There is no urban station there because Jam'n still plays plenty of pop. The amount of recurrent/gold on this station is pretty impressive too. They spent way too much time on the playlist for it to be a stunt in my opinion? The imaging is kinda basic though...

Considering that WRKO is unlistenable near the 495 belt at night, and not to clear in the day time, they
have to go to FM. I don't see WAAF going to hell though

I think it's funny they used Anthony Michaels for VO too. Good voice but hardly an Urban format voice.

Hey, if his voice is good enough for my Internet talk radio station... :D

btw Has anyone else heard the Power 96.9 liners where Anthony says, "Jams for Boston"? With all the talk about Power being a Jammin' clone (or not) I thought this was notable...

About time Boston got a real urban station! I agree the imaging SUCKS though. I think the people at Greater Media Boston saw there was a void, and filled it! Disregard the old conservative haters, they're still in shock!

If the imaging sucks, it may not be real...it may be a stunt. Hold on to your hopes.

No, I just stole a name that he made up when his station was colon cleanser 24x7. Now it's all PSAs, cars for shady kid's charities and Chamonix. (and I'm the same age as Jughead O'Bama.)

It's not a stunt. This is Greater Media's first Urban. Some things will not be 'right' immediately. It takes experimentation. Urban in Boston makes good business sense. Radio is a business.

I can't imagine this is a stunt for the reason TROCK pointed out. The purpose of a stunt is to be outlandish and attract attention. You don't stunt with an established format that although does not appeal to me is hardly outlandish.

I am surprised how badly Greater Media handled this entire format switch and let TKK die a slow painful death. Considering they tweaked the format by adding more news and traffic a short time ago, they must have made the decision right after getting the fall numbers.

Eagan and Braudie have other jobs and may land on air somewhere else. My good friend Hank Morse will still work on the other GM stations and Graham will not be out of work long. I feel bad for the producers and all the young people Clear Chanel hired to do news for TKK, I suspect most of them will be laid off.

I found it interesting that E&B thanked all the GM's they worked but only mentioned one by name, Phil Redo who now runs GBH 89.7

I am going to miss the station. I listened to it more than any other of terrestrial radio.

Finally, I thought it was really cool that Gov. Patrick went to the studio to say goodbye rather than calling in. He said he was in Dorchester for a monthly prayer meeting with local ministers and stopped in on his way to the State House.
