101.1 The Beat Phoenix Completes Signal Upgrade

Unless I missed those, I don't believe they made the Top 100. Radio is not looking to play what people are not familiar with. Which is why you don't see me complaining how radio won't play what I prefer. I realize its not reality.

They are in on the top 100 of the hip hop/R&B chart. They play those people at the same level on the hiphop side, but not R&B.

With all due respect DJ Perry, let's keep it real. Jill Scott, KEM and Eric Benet are well-known familiar artists, BUT mostly on Urban and Urban AC stations(which serve majority African-American audiences). Their music doesn't have enough crossover appeal, that's why you don't see them on the Hot 100. It isn't because they aren't popular, but they aren't popular with different ethnic groups. The thing about the Valley is that it doesn't have enough of an African-American population to support a full-fledged Urban AC format. The closest thing to that in the valley is Rhythmic AC (Mega 104.3 and Eva 95.5) which does play R&B Old School, BUT has to serve the mainstream audience as well. When (or if) the African-American population grows a lot more in the valley, the demand will grow for Urban AC. If Eva 95.5 is successful and the valley begins a growth of black residents, I see eva morphing into more of an Urban AC. Also, maybe Mega or Eva should consider a neo-soul specialty show on the weekends to see if the Urban AC music landscape could be expanded in Phoenix. Wouldn't hurt. They already have "night grooves" on Eva and that plays a little bit more deeper old school R&B than they play the rest of the day.

Perhaps I should clarify. Steve your comment is on point, I agree that they can sound better than Power (that sould be pretty easy). At first read, I assumed you were responding to XMPortable, but i see now that you brought the original topic back. 8) Not sure how it shifted to an Urban AC discussion....

The Beat could make some inroads if they could end the Big Boy's Neighborhood "syndicated morning show in the afternoon" format. Didn't Art Mobley try running two different morning shows (Tom Joyner in the morning, Doug Banks in the afternoon) each day on Majik 107 back in the mid-'90s (and the few listeners they had figured something didn't sound right)?

V103 in Chicago runs both shows with great success. That being said though, Big Boy belongs in mornings. I moved him to afternoons on The Beat because it was the only way to get the show without the current music. Now that the station has transitioned, maybe it would be a legit option. I would also say that after listening while I was back for Spring Training the show is a shadow of what it once was. The Beat would be well served to let it go at the end of the current deal.
