101.5 The Point Flipping To Hot 101.5?

Somebody's watching the boards. I no sooner posted and the RDS was changed to "hot1015tampabay.com".

A liner they played shows they are going after FLZ, initially.
"Happy 235th Birthday, America, you're almost as old as M.J."

Bill, you may be right about the shades of Power Pig.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

The last time that someone in the Tampa market said something negative about MJ on the air, he ended up getting hit with a SLAAP suit. I hope the same doesn't happen to the powers that be at Hot 101.5.

As for 97X, some have hoped for many years that it would move to the 101.5 frequency. But the reality is that 97X is successful with a niche format (modern rock) on a station with a limited signal, whereas WPOI has an almost identical coverage area as WFLZ, making it more suitable for a more mainstream format -- or an outright CHR war, like what we're seeing now.

If someone who works at Cox Radio Tampa is reading, there's a person (currently in Orlando) who's been trying to get on a bigger radio station for years.
(Do PD/MD's even look up talent, let alone listen to aircheck demos nowadays?)

This guy's got a passion for great radio.
Look him up:

Depends, look at X102.9 up in Jacksonville. Whuch is pretty much J-villes version of 97X. Within a year causing Heritage Rocker WPLA 107.3 to flip to Classic Hits. X102-9 is on a 100 KW Flamethrower with WJGL 96.9. Interesting note the station X102.9 was replaced by was Jacksonvilles own "The NEW 102-9 The Point."

Why didn't Cox flip 97.1 instead? As they are rated lower then The Point was.

Also I noticed in the video on the new website Hot 101.5 is taking big shots at Clear Channel and their CHR. Should Cox also be taking shots at CBS Radio's WiLD 94.1 ?

It's not that modern rock couldn't find success on a 100kw signal in Tampa; to the contrary, if it does well on 97.1 (and it's been strong enough to survive there for nearly a dozen years now), I'd imagine the format would do even better on a stronger signal. But if Cox had decided to move 97X's modern rock format to 101.5 rather than launch a CHR war with WFLZ, the next question would be: what would Cox program on its 97.1 FM signal?

Take a look at the coverage area for 97X: http://is.gd/WSUNFM.

Now, compare it with the coverage area that 101.5 the Point had: http://is.gd/WPOIFM.

And nevermind the age 6+ ratings available online (here and elsewhere); those are beauty contest numbers that have almost no use in regards to billing, which is why Arbitron makes them available for public consumption. Though, if you really want to take 6+ into consideration, 97X actually outperformed WPOI in March 2011 in that demo, though WPOI had a much larger cume.

Think about it like this: if you're Cox Radio and you want to start the first Tampa CHR war since the historic Power Pig vs. Q105 ("Screw the Q") battle of 1989-1993, you're not going to use a station with a relatively weak signal to take on a 100kw legacy station when you have your own 100kw signal available to use for that purpose.

Blowtorch vs. blowtorch....let's get it on!

I'll drink to that.

For a signal that does not reach the entire market well (which hurts them in the PPM's), 97.1's numbers are not bad at all. It also helps split the audience that would otherwise go to WXTB, and protects The Bone.

Now, to have a flamethrower like 101.5 languishing at #14 is another thing entirely. It's been a long time coming IMHO.

I may not be a big fan of CHR. However I've been listening and Hot 101.5 isn't bad. Its actually sounding pretty good musically. I hope Cox does well!

Major fail after major fail after major fail....
I've started listing them on my site www.thepowerpig.com

In 93-3FLZ's defense, it's had rhythmic top 40 Wild 98.7 sign on against it, then Wild moved to a MUCH bigger signal at 94.1 to better compete AND to help Wild beat FLZ, they flipped the 98.7 frequency to adult top 40 (Play 98.7). The plan was for Wild to grab younger FLZ listeners while Play would hopefully grab 25-35 females. Even with THAT well executed plan by Wild/Play, FLZ has still had record numbers 6.8-7.4-7.5 (March-April-May 2011) and is #1 in cume with 842,200. Pretty impressive. If the Wild/Play plan didnt work, I'm not sure what HOT 101.5 expects to achieve. in a few months, this will be another station Tommy Chuck can just pat on the head, tell it to be good and send it to it's room with no dinner.

And why doesnt HOT attack WILD? Well chances are, FLZ won't respond to HOT on air whatsoever. They don't need to, they're #1. HOT wont attack WILD because Orlando will play the attack game back and DESTROY them.

Can CHR work without jocks, no jingles, and repetitve liners?

WAPE shows personalities around the clock. Maybe I'm obtuse, but this format needs to be live at least up to midnight. Or least VT in strong people from other Cox products. I think if they do it like they do the Dove and the Eagle they are wasting their time

You right about that. However the reason that WAPE has personality around the clock is because Cox is operating a heritage station dating back to the 60's.

Just think. People up in Jacksonville will be extremely upset if Cox bought up WAPE. Downsized the airstaff and just ran repetitive liners. The Ape is a part of Jacksonville history. Listeners also feel the legacy of The Ape shall be respected. If Cox bought up WCBS in New York, axed all the airstaff and called the station "The New 101-1" New Yorkers will be greatly upset. Even if it was the same format.

Just like you I firmly belive that all Music Station should have some personality.

Back in Top 40 heaven heyday, owners usually had personalities ready to go a few days after the flip. "No jocks" seldom lasted more than a few days. Sometimes they evolved. I remember WCFL going Top 40 in 1965 and they were never jockless if I remember right.

A radio station can't win without jingles? lol

The sacred cows are mooing loudly today in Tampa bay. ;-)
