101.5 The Point Flipping To Hot 101.5?

I also think that after a few days of watching this story and listening to the new station, it's pointed in the right direction. If the powers that be at FLZ have the attitude that this is just another lame attempt at breaking them down, I think they might want to think again. From the very first afternoon (Friday), Hot had promo people "on the streets", re-wrapped and imaged station vehicles, and even billboards along the major roads (On the new digital Clear Channel ones of all places). As with any new radio station, you can't take the first week or two as how "it's gonna sound" or how it's eventually gonna play out. But from what I'm hearing and seeing, they will take some audience from FLZ. Will they destroy them? Not likely... However, Cox has proved at times to be in it for the long haul as long as they succeed in getting a slice of a certain demo or sales. Just look at the last 10 years with 97X / 102.5 against a long time rocker in 98Rock and the former Thunder 103.5. It can be done if done correctly. So far so good....

So much for innovation.

I rest my case.

What case have you rested? You haven’t made a clear point at all about anything other than to make it known you disagree with my assessment while you have offered nothing in the form of a solution. If you are going to quote me, then quote me correctly. The "blah, blah, blah" was added by you and is not a part of my original text. You didn’t even get my name correct when it is clearly stated plain and simple in each and every post made by me.

However, in all fairness, how would you do things differently in order to be innovative?

I still think it is lame to can Corey Dylan givin they have so many places to place her in more "adult" formats.

I always thought Cory did well during her mid-day slot on 97x...what was her name then?

Of course 97x has a fairly solid line-up now. Is there any other place in Tampa for her? It's funny to me that all of these stations go after the 18 to 34 female crowd but so few have a heavy female talent line-up. The only one that I know of is 98.7 which has Dana in the mornings/mid-day, and Melony at night. Chad Pitt isn't a female but, from what I hear he does a fairly decent job of pulling that crowd. I personally have a low-tolerance for him. He's too "radio" in my opinion. (I.E. He simply sounds fake.)

i was just thinking of all the talk about 970 WFLA on 97.9 FM. (98 Rock) Has Clear Channel ever tried the Variety Hits/ Jack Format in other markets. With the loss of "The Point" I was thinking that the time has come for Tampa to get JACKED. WWRZ is too much of a rim-shot for anywhere other than Eastern Hillsborough. (The farthest west the station covers OK is Tampa.)  97.9 has a killer signal that will cover everywhere within the market. I know 98 Rock will never flip but was talking theoretically.

"Tampa Bays 97.9 Jack FM, Playing what WE Want."

CC tried the variety hits thing with Mix about 5 or 6 years ago and it was a train wreck. If the Goo Goo Dolls/Salt N Peppa/Rod Stewart mixes didn't work in the diary days I don't think it will build an audience in PPM days.

The only way CC blows up an existing FM is only if FLZ loses substantial ground (like they did making The Beat in 2003) or if they attack someone cornering the market with a format (like they did making US 103.5 in 2005). I think they take Hot 101.5 head on.

Im not in favor of that....98 should stay rock....but how about this :

" Everything that Rocks, 98 Rock"

personally i'd like to hear that......similar to this great sation.......minus the lame morning show (keep it music)

At some point Clear Channel will begin a WFLA simulcast on FM, even if it is only on a translator in the beginning. Clear Channel will have no choice but to make that decision in order to attract and keep a younger news-talk demo as the AM audience shares continues to age. Unless it is a sports formatted AM, very few under 40 ever listen to AM anymore. At some point it will move to a full-market FM. As for which FM, that is yet to be determined.

As for the Point becoming CHR as Hot 101.5, I believe this was a very intelligent move and will give WFLZ and WLLD very good competition overall which will make for better CHR radio for Tampa Bay.

Clear Channel has programmed the Variety Hits/Adult Hits format in a handful of markets, but it has never been a format that the company has embraced on a large scale. There are various arguments about what exactly the format entails, though I'd suggest it's best described as a Classic Hits/Hot AC hybrid with a large playlast (1,500 or so songs).

As for when Mix 100.7 added more gold to its lineup, it didn't fit the Variety Hits template IMO since it didn't have the huge playlist that is an important component of the equation. The presence of 101.5 the Point in the market for so long as an all '80s station likely blocked CBS Radio (then known as Infinity Broadcasting) from putting Jack FM on in Tampa when that company was rolling it out in many major markets across the country circa 2005. Between 101.5 the Point with '80s music, Mix 100.7 with Hot AC, and 107.3 the Eagle with Classic Hits, there wasn't room for a Variety Hits station in the market.

Here are some examples on Clear Channel with the format:

-Jack FM: They've only owned three stations that have used the Jack FM name, which they have to pay a licensing fee to use. One was KPRF in Armarillo, TX, which became 98.7 Jack FM in March 2007; Clear Channel sold it (and many other stations) to Gap Broadcasting later that year. The other two are WQSR in Baltimore (102.7 Jack FM) and KQJK (93.7 Jack FM), both of which Clear Channel acquired in March 2009 as part of a multi-market station swap made with CBS Radio which already had the Jack FM name and Variety Hits format. Clear Channel, at least to date, has kept the name and format on both of those stations.

-Other branding: Clear Channel has put the format on with branding that doesn't require licensing fees in some medium-sized markets, including 100.5 Louie FM in Louisville (now GenX Radio); 96.7 Steve FM in Columbia, SC; 100.3 the Bus in Des Moines, IA; and 92.9 Tom FM in Dover, DE.

I listen to WJGO-FM "BOB FM" in the Ft. Myers area or WWRZ-FM "MAX FM" in the Lakeland area...

Heres the thing, 107.3 The Eagle has a short 300-Song Playlist. Mix 100.7 is Hot AC and 101.5 The Point was a joke. I mean CBS/ Infinity could have wiped the floor of WXGL and WPOI. WMTX not so much though. Heck instead of Play 98.7 could Variety Hits be put on that.
