101.9 - Format Change Coming Up On Friday? <VIDEO INSIDE>

radiojomo said:
By the way guys, are we talking about Spanish or English Top 40? Univision launching an English Top 40 in Los Angeles would be like Clear Channel or CBS getting into Regional Mexican or Spanish Pop in Los Angeles.

Well, CHR's in Latin America tend to play both Spanish and English language music.

In any case, KXOL, KXOS and KSSE are all forms of CHR or Churban aimed at Spanish speakers.

And CBS put on Spanish pop in Houston and Dallas, and forms of CHR in Tampa and DC.

Clear Channel put on CHR in Miami and is among the top Spanish language stations there. They also have Spanish language pop in Chicago and Regional in Atlanta... to name just a couple of examples.

Or maybe they're bringing back Nicole Sandler, Chuck Moshontz, and the whole crew with the AAA format. There is a format hole here in LA to be filled you know.

Anyone??? No???

<<Crickets>>

Well, K-LITE is available too...for those who are old enough to remember.

Heard from a very good source that all this hoopla is for their Fiestas Patrias Festival/Concert they do every year! They were also hoping it would spark some cooler talk to try to spark some ratings a bit.... I guess it's working! LOL

Their event this year is at the Placita Olvera, which holds, barely, a couple of thousand... not the 100,000 capacity Whittier Narrows events they used to do... that's more a sign of how bad the music business is, not radio and not the station.

The Fiestas Patrias event was last Sunday... already over.

Just checked the 101.9 website and now it's simply branded as "La 101.9". How long has that branding been in place for?

UPDATE: Just checked their Facebook page to see when the new logos were posted and it seems that they were posted at 11PM Thursday, I have a good feeling that it was a simple branding change from La Nueva to La 101.9.

About 4 hours. The logo with the eagle formerly used by the owner's predecessor, HBC, for it's regional Mexican format which I named "Aguila" on XM 10 years ago is new, replacing the glyph-like logo used for nearly 10 years.

A rather significant change in music blend, with gold going back 25 or more years and fewer currents in each hour are the obvious changes

So you mean more like Que Buena in Dallas, then?

Wonder if the ramping up on the gold will have an effect on Recuerdo...

And I had no idea Piolín was getting beat so badly by the other stations. Sort of strange to see him going the way of El Cucuy.

No. Texas taste in regional is very different.

Recuerdo has been eliminating or reducing the regional gold except for the grupera stuff.

Renan's wounds were self inflicted. In this new situation, there is an issue with the format itself as well as strong regional talents like Cheto and Mandríl all causing issues.

101.9 & KDAY are my favorite stations. On my way to work I was listening to 101.9 and they were playing cumbias and nortenas, gruperas. It seems like they're after the older crowd.

They also kept airing station commercials announcing their "BONCHOS MUSICALES," aka music blocks. The commercials were formatted like the computer was talking. "insert song here." bleep <song sample>, repeat. They didn't have that before.

Speaking of, what happened to the other staff at KSCA? Apparently Chiquibaby is still in Vegas. (they had her there too before the switch)

Stephanie is there, but the talk is limited to two times an hour. El Feo and El Wey are there, too...

Stopsets moved to :57 and :27, and currents cut to just a couple an hour.

That's "bonche" which is an anglicism and comes from "bunch" with the same meaning in Spanish as English... a group, assortment, etc.

They just aired a commercial explaining the change. They said something along the lines that they've been known as LA NUEVA since 1997 and that starting today, they'll be known simply as LA 101.9. They also said that La Nueva has been known for their world famous on air personalities, but that now, their focus is the music and less commercials.
