101.9 is now...

Yes, more of these songs can make the difference, a bit more new wave tracks, not the Duran Duran's or Spandau Ballets from this world but tracks from The Curch or The Cult.

And speaking of that, let's return to us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. It was one year ago this week that 101.9 decided to pull the plug on WRXP since it has been a rock format for 2 or 3 years. The station became "FM News" a month later, it was stunting as "101.9 FM New" for a short time. Before the failed format took place. This is the result of what has happened last year.

"New Rock" doesn't mean that each individual song is new, but rather part of a new-STYLE of rock. (Lots of which comes from New-Wave, appropriately enough in this case)

Since these stations now share an operations manager (Jim Richards, a Randy Michaels long time radio associate), see the playlist at the WKQX-LP-87.7 Chicago "Q87.7" website below - seems there's much in common with what's currently airing on WEMP NYC:

Now that New York has an alternative/modern rock station, I believe the only major remaining commercial format hole is Country.
And with three new suburban country stations added over the past five years or so (Thunder 106.3/106.5, Kicks 105.5/106.3, and My Country 96.1) the genre is better represented in this area than it used to be. People in many of the suburban areas that have lots of country music fans can get a reasonable signal from at least one of them.
And with all-news, political talk and the top rated sports station all remaining on AM, perhaps the march of talk stations to FM has been slowed, at least in the New York area.

Now for the naming...

New York's New Rock Alternative...EMPIRE 101.9 WEMP NEW YORK!

That moniker doesn't scream rock music AT ALL. Empire, with all due respect to the NY State slogan and the iconic Manhattan skyscraper, conveys a corporate atmosphere which is very contrary to the Alternative Rock lifestyle.

I think we should keep in mind that myrxp.com, with the same logo and design from the WRXP days, is fully operational and streaming... and it is owned by Emmis Communications ;)

RXP isn't streaming anymore. So yes, where?

Well, lets see if poorly executed music can do better than poorly executed news. I have a feeling within 2 weeks we'll have people calling for another flip to dance music or country.

Two weeks??? On the Radio-Info.com New York Forum, calls for those two formats to air over terrestrial radio are heard at least once a week ;)

EDM as well.

Just as you have suburban country stations in the region, you also have two dance/EDM stations in the region (Party 105 and Drive FX). And before one person comes up and gets it all wrong again, 'KTU is NOT dance. They are rhythmic A/C. And while 92.3 Now plays the mainstream element of electro pop in their format, none of the artists that represent it come from a true dance music background. Understandable...it's a CHR station. But as far as those artists go, they're just in it until things fade out and they go back to R&B/hip-hop.

I do this every week already :) I'm sure people are sick of it. Whatever.

Even I wasn't like this for Urban AC in Albany :p Although since then I've given up on it happening, now I'm waiting for a AAA or Radio 104.5 style format :)

Dani, let me give you crazy advice here. NEVER give up! :)

I've been running the coalition for 19 years already for various reasons. I've taken MANY punches (I still do) for what I truly believe in, which is the dance format and most importantly the VIABILITY of it. Since those humble years I've expanded my reach to helping out the dance music industry in any way I can, along with giving new artists exposure on my online show. I don't ask for one cent doing it. I love and believe in the music that much. And generally speaking, I'm a happy-go-lucky person, always smiling and seeing the best and positive of things. But the one thing I will always battle people on, is IGNORANCE.

You don't have to like dance music or for that matter understand it (this I'm saying in general). But at least if you want to understand or learn, I'm more than happy to help. But when one poster imparticular in here bashes on it, I'm gonna fight hard and I will NEVER back down on it. I've taken so much punches from radio pros, fans of radio, etc, that I really don't "feel the pain" anymore.

I've been up in the Capital District many times and yes, there is an audience that would want Urban A/C (what Kiss-FM was and 'BLS is). I've been through downtown Albany, Schnectady and Troy so I know the audience is there for it. If you believe in it that much, then fight for it. Make people understand and if they don't, fight harder. If it's something you truly believe in, you fight for it.

Good luck :)

For what it's worth, the #1 most requested song on Alternative WEQX (Albany market) is a song with a big dubstep element to it - "Global Concepts" by Robert Delong. It's not straight dubstep though - I just don't think the older listeners who love Beck, Talking Heads, U2, etc want to hear Skrillex immediately afterward.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm so Happy!!!!!!!!!Just hope that these people have jobs though! Please make sure that these people are given new jobs! Thank you Merlin Media. All we need is country and dance!
