Dean and I worked together on KCBQ in 1979 until they replaced him with Perry Allen (which he learned about from a item in the newspaper). He also did 13K, and then came back to town several years later to do mornings at some also ran FM station. He had a long run in San Francisco doing mornings and I'd imagine that a show on 103.7 would be voice tracked.

simulcast krth 101.how do you know that they are going to a oldies format?

"same music" might just mean same (Selector) database - same library, clocks, etc.

Mr. Bob,quick question - I don't mean to get off subject {I do hope the Oldies land at 103.7} but speaking of Dean Goss, I remember a story from Ken Levine who used to work in radio later going on to write for M*A*S*H and other funny shows. Didn't Ken slip Dean's name into the script of an episode as a General?
The one where everyone dies their hair red,, but for the life of me I can't remember why. 8)

Hmmmm, think they'll need a newsguy? <g>

Actually Charlie Quinn has preached long and hard (at least to me) regarding an oldies format. It just can't be sold (to advertisers) being the #1 reason. On the other hand the Sophie format just had its 1st anniversary and I'm going to guess nobody is happy with the ratings.

Cheers,
JQ

Did 103.7 used to be "The Planet" (KPLN or summat)???

I used to listen to them via streaming 7-8 years ago.

Having a heard time believing that. Gene is already working at Kyxy. Where are you getting this from? Until I hear it from SDRadio.net, (or until I see a source for this info) I am not buying it. Feel free to PM me if you have some.

Sorry, been burned on this one too many times. How do we know this is not another wishful proclamation (like 105.7 is going oldies, no more sports)?

I may have an aircheck somewhere. Yes, they were "Classic Hits, 103 dot 7, the Planet," but at the time, "Classic Hits" really meant "Classic Rock," and not the updated oldies format that the phrase is used for today. Other than the use of the pharse "hits" the music and formatic between them and KGB was about the same, 70s and early 80s based album rock.

Well, at least they'd have practice with CBS 'classic hits' considering the stunting they did a year ago as "Sophie" breathlessly arrived.

And failed.

Wait, was that a year ago?
And by what criteria do we conclude that Sophie is "failed" as you say?

No ratings, no billings.

The same SpinDrQuinn Charlie Quinn told me you were not fired. I like Charlie -- a good radio guy at KyXy. The last couple of changes it's been smoke and mirrors at 103.7. (SpinDrQuinn is his AOL name.)

I still maintain that you were one of the last to rip, re-write and READ news. Not rip the 'papers and say the news. There is a difference; and John Q. Lawrence set the standard.

That's true, in season 7 - http://www.tv.com/mash/show/119/episode_guide.html?season=7 : Dean knew Ken and in fact when we were at KCBQ Dean and a writing partner were busy cranking out ideas ("concepts") for TV show's including MASH. I can't remember the writing partner's name, but he had a cute wife by the name of Becky who worked in radio news in San Diego.

The Planet never streamed: CBS was very much against that and took a long time to put any of its stations online.

The Planet advertised itself (TV and billboards) as playing hip rock music from the 60's and 70's, but it was mostly the Billy Joel and Steve Nicks pop stuff. The music director was also the MD for KYXY and he had not a clue about classic rock.

The problem with any changes a 103.7 is that the same people who've been wrong with format after format since The Planet will be running it: I guess they figure that if they try enough things, eventually something will work (think the room full of monkies with typewriters.....).

Dean Goss is doing weekends only in San Francisco, so I could see him doing weekday voicetracks for a San Diego stations (KFRC is also owned by CBS).

Any chance for similarities like KOOL 99.3, before La Preciosa took over?? That was a really good oldies-hits stations with a huge rotations and themes. You can get KRTH in San Diego, so one would hope the sound is a bit different than them and not as repetitious.
