103.9 Jack FM

I'm streaming it now, and its now playing music. Nice to see Jack-FM back in Columbus! I think it will do better than 98.9's current format.

NABCO has done it, although as of this writing, it's still all news.www.1039jackfm.com

Hasn't NABCO tried this format before with the TED-FM?

* Ted-Less In Ohio? We hear rumblings that North American's Adult Hits WTDA (Ted-FM)/Columbus, OH may soon dump the format in favor of Talk — stay tuned.

If this happens it wasn't because they didn't try. The signal is just so bad......how often does your scan button just skip over it?

What kind of success would TED-FM had if it had the Blitz's signal?

Great move, although I wish it was on 99.7 instead.  Also wish they had done it nine months ago when interest in 98.9 Jack-FM was suddenly starting to build and the equity was strongest, just before the plug was pulled when it was sold to Salem.  As I mentioned before, Ted actually earned some of 103.9's higher ratings.  Reportedly they didn't know how to sell the format, but that was 9 (!?) years ago, and by now the net has made the concept of a diverse music mix more acceptable and familiar to people.

Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) this is the national feed, unlike 98.9 which was programmed locally.  But hopefully they'll add some local flavor.  A big part of 98.9's imaging from Day 1 was provided by having people call in and leave offbeat comments, sometimes very locally focused and with added commentary by Howard Cogan.  I'm assuming that won't happen on 103.9 -- at least not the local focus.

Now, what's up with the upgrade?  That would seem to be one key to success.

Anyway, despite the caveats, I'm glad to see Jack back in town!  Interesting how it's stuck in a "Rewind sandwich."

Sure it may be the "Spark Net satellite feed".. but i'll be ... NABCO actually did something that some what makes sense.. (They did better with TED than any of the other formats on 103.9) .. Now time to build out that CP!!

Looks like NABCO is dropping their Total Traffic Network traffic service with the format flips; Bruce Kline posted on his facebook that his last day is tomorrow.

Throwing Jack on 99.7 wouldn't mean success. Look no further than Dayton's Fly 92.9, also an Adult Hits outlet, did a 2.2 in a recent book...and Fly is on a 40,000 watt Class B signal. Don't forget TuneIn Radio on smartphones as well for a clear signal. I always use TuneIn! Great app!

People are still going to need traffic reports, regardless of format. I would've kept the Total Traffic Network.

Conversely, look at CC's big-signal Adult Hits WHLK (The Lake) in Cleveland, which is currently #2 there with an 8.5 share.  They've had strong ratings ever since they debuted in the beginning of 2011.  Adult Hits is doing really well in Pittsburgh, too.  And this is one format where the "money demo" shares tend to be higher than the published 6+.

Naturally throwing Jack-FM on 99.7 wouldn't "guarantee" success.  As always there are so many variables at play.  But the potential is sure there, especially looking at Jack's momentum on 98.9 in the months before it was bought and dumped by Salem -- and that was on a Class A.  One hurdle for 103.9 might be that Rewind has inched a bit more in a musically-Jackish direction over the past few months, although it's still quite different.

Question: With this iteration of Jack will they play music more consistent with the Radio One version of Jack (i.e. music with more of a pop lean) or will they stick to the unappealing mishmash of rock tunes they were playing the last time?

I thought the Radio One version was actually (and disappointingly) quite rock-leaning at first, and well into its existence.  It was dominated by classic rock at times.  It wasn't until 3-5 months before Jack 98.9's demise that it started placing greater emphasis on the pop elements and sounding much better and more-balanced.

While it varies some by hour, the Sparknet feed on 103.9 sounds pretty balanced.  You hear a fair amount of hair bands and some classic rock, but even more pop-leaning stuff (including pop-alternative).  So I'd say it's closer to what the R1 version was near the end than what it was near the beginning, and IMO that's a good thing.

It would seem one disadvantage of having to stick with the national feed is that they lack the ability to tweak, which might be more important in a broader and less-traditional format like this one compared to, say, mainstream oldies (WODC, using the CC Premium choice list).

Everyone remember this? Imaging was actually good, and the music mashup sounded great. Not sure what happened. Wouldn't surprise me if Hal programmed it, considering I don't think he knows what he's doing behind a scheduler hence why he doesn't program The Blitz.

I like the Sparknet feed but I know it's not going to sound nearly as good as R1 did with Jack. JD Kunes programmed that to the market with help from Lee Davenport. The liners were local, music was local, and it sounded damn good. The problem with the bird is:

1) You won't hear nearly as many local liners. I'm sure they leave room for a few per hour but nothing like the stuff R1 wrote.
2) No room to tweak... if we have a Buckeyes gameday, you can bet R1 Jack FM would play Hang On Sloopy with a custom liner for it.... not with 1039.
3) Mistakes... If not carefully ran, you will hear mistakes with running it off the bird. Song overlapping, liner errors, dead air, it'll sound choppy. Let's hope they get it right.

I do agree with placing it on 1039, but if The Blitz continues to decline, I am all for dumping the format and going with CHR to go against NCI. If X beats them (if they're not already), I'd look into another format. Hell, they already are putting money into Blitz with jocks, imaging, and remotes. CHR requires that.

What about SAM-FM?Is Sam similar to Jack-FM?I drove through Logan,OH,the other day and found SAM-FM on 98.3.I assume that they are using the Dial Global central feed and same goes for 103.9 Jack-FM.Both great formats!!!!!!!

yep the Logan station is running off the bird -- It has been (previously they ran a Country format off the bird before flipping to SAM-FM a few years ago).

I love SAM. They actually play currents and is more driven towards the woman listener, love the format, but Jack has proven some success on 989 so NABCO is trying it out again.

Even at NABCO's worse attempt - Jack should gain more shares than News Radio did!
