105.3 sold to Radio One

Re: 105.3 launches today at 5:00

It's Urban Contemporary more than likely.

It looks like Radio One is trying to upgrade their other properties in Charlotte as well. WQNC application to up power to 25,000 watts from 6,000 and a minor upgrade to WPZS from 5,200 to 6,000 watts. I still think the programming is the problem and seriously doubt they will be successful at whatever they attempt.

Syndicated Doug Banks is not running on 92.7. Could it be a sign?

BOOO!!!!!

Agreed.  The market already has two other urban ACs and Power 98 which is practically an urban AC except for a few hours during the afternoon.  Hopefully they flip My 92.7 soon.  I stand by that Charlotte needs a Mainstream Urban station.  Since 96.1 The Beat went mainstream that has been a gaping hole in the market.  Urban AC is more than covered by V101.9, My92.7 and now Old School 105.3, and Power 98.

Interesting note: the My 92.7 website now redirects to the Old School 105.3 website. Some changes are in store on the 92.7 frequency.

I see 92.7 becoming mainstream urban. Makes absolutely no sense to have 2 urban ACs in the stable. If this holds true, why put mainstream on 92.7 rather than 105.3?

Maybe because 92.7 has been mainstream urban in the past and they also might not want as large of a coverage area for the format. Most of the demographic that would listen to a mainstream urban station is going to be in the immediate Charlotte metro area especially if they are going to lean heavier hip-hop. The 92.7 coverage area works for that.

Even if they can't bring down Power 98, they will at least bring some competition and WPEG will be required to step up its game.

2nd song is "Ain't No Stoppin Us Now" by McFadden & Whitehead ;D ;D

Sounds like it's got a Rhythmic AC lean ;)

Audio sounds good in NW Charlotte /// Mt. Holly N.C.

Listening Now. Steve.

I didn't think a station could get anymore stale...but I was wrong! How do they expect to keep this station sounding fresh with such a limited format? I'm tired of it already. Charlotte is not Dallas, we actually have an Urban AC that sounds fresh and progressive in V101.9. KRNB and KSoul played from the same playbook..and since the switch the results are marginal (basically tied). 14th place? And they're singing praises? SMH. What a waste of a good signal.

I think this is the perfect kind of station to go up against V101.9 and WPEG.
I've heard plenty of songs so far on 105.3 that V101.9 wouldn't play.
It's not really a limited format when the music spans 25 years.
Last night I heard them play "No Diggity" by Blackstreet which means they can skew little bit younger
while at the same time play the Rhythmic Tracks from the 70s to 90s,
especially some New Jack Swing & Disco hits that V101.9 neglects.

Added: 6:40 pm - 105.3 is playing Lisa Lisa's "I Wonder If I Take You Home"
Pretty happy to see a few Freestyle tracks in the playlist ;)

Seriously? I haven't heard not one song I haven't already heard a million times on Q92.7, My 92.7 or V101.9. It's all familiar and most of it's pretty burned out. Radio One has basically had the same playlist since 2004. Q92.7, My92.7 and V101.9 have been playing "No Diggity" and "I Wonder If I Take You Home" for years. Not really going deep. I mean they can't even get people to call in. They've got their staff on air 'calling in' saying "I can't even listen to 101.9 no more". LMAO!

This Song Simply Rules. RETRO 80's---Dance Club Traxx!!

Now if they keep it upbeat that would be a great move. Most Urban AC tends to have a slow and tired feel. I hope they don't leave out Old School Hip-Hop.

Absolutely. It seems kind of boring to me. I can't identify with "black" music but I heard a couple of tunes that crossed over to AC back in the day and can now be heard on the station I listen to.

But V-101.9 has old school hip-hop on Saturday evenings (or was it Fridays? I haven't listened lately) and I actually like some of those songs.

Still, if no one is doing real hip-hop, this does seem to be a waste of a signal. Q-92.7 needs to try something different.
