106.1 the breeze

I'm so happy. Just found out my local radio station
@1061thebreeze
is playing Christmas music non stop until New Year. Now, that's how we do it!
#Christmas #music

When was the last time a station in town ran Christmas music later than the day after the 25th? Some people celebrate the season up until Three Kings Day in January; honestly, I think it makes more sense to run longer with the music toward New Year’s than it does to start in, say, October.

There’s basically one station prior to this year, and 101 has played holiday music longer in the past. The way the timing falls relative to a weekend can play a part. But that aside, it doesn’t matter if some people do the whole Epiphany thing. The numbers seem to basically support moving back on or close to the 26th as is played out all over the country overall. The Breeze can run their little stunt longer, more power to them if it helps.

It's a bit far fetched but the folks at The Breeze might just be trying to hold onto a little longer to folks who would have tuned back to 101.1 if both frequencies had flipped back at the same time. It might be a good idea for The Breeze to run a lot of promos this week that explain their regular format, basically asking folks to give them a shot once everyone's flipped back to normal. It could only help.

iHeart's KOST in Los Angeles is also still in ho-ho-ho mode, and there's a less than zero chance they're blowing it up once the seasonal stunt wraps. I think the same applies to WISX.

A few things.
first, I never expected AC to play hiphop.
That thru me. because I thought AC never included that.
Or they did edited versions with that taken out.
Second, I've heard WBEB play Christmas music after Christmas but usually sprinkle in a song here and there.
I think other stations have done this, too.

It's very interesting. Maybe they're getting that Nielsen metadata and finding that they're going through the roof. We know there are a pretty good number of people who want to keep listening to it after Christmas Day passes.

I got to listen to the local radio stations over the past few weeks while traveling to and fro with family. What The Breeze was doing certainly seemed interesting and somewhat experimental. Arguably (but also clearly) the most popular Christmas song at this time is "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey but they seemed to play it very infrequently. In fact, on their own list of most-played songs, it's currently all the way down at #81. And at #83 is Mariah's "Oh Santa" which is surprising because I don't think many stations even acknowledge that one.

The Breeze sounded very bright and crisp and B101.1 still sounds...weird to me. Too much bass on everything and a weird sort of reverb effect on some (but not all) songs. WJBR also sounded very bright and was, in fact, the station we listened to most while traveling.

Anyway, Happy New Year!

I know that the Recently/Most Played features are a bit wonky because the Recently Played list misses lots of stuff but The Breeze's playlist sounded very different to me during that last week. Noticeably, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" jumped from 80-something into the top-ten most played. They must be putting some real thought into what they're doing, which is certainly interesting.

I listened a good chunk of the past week…and while not studying “most played,” what I did hear as I drove for extended periods was not something that would get me to come back next time. Lots of unfamiliar stuff and versions of songs. I get it, and it’s not like they want me as their base. Just an observation and purely anecdotal.

It's funny you say that. When I was writing my previous post, I considered saying that if I had one piece of advice, it would be that they do at least a little local research. Christmas listeners in this area have become accustomed to and obviously love exactly what B101 has been playing for years. The Breeze might do better to simply replicate that as closely as possible. If anything, maybe lean more heavily on the softer and/or older stuff but otherwise, I'd suggest playing pretty much the same library as 101.1. We all know Philadelphia listeners/viewers have a history of preferring the status quo. And 106.1 is definitely not gonna out-B the B.

The last time I compared 106.1's recently played to other iHeart Christmas stations around the country, they looked exactly the same.

Maybe their national playlist just doesn’t do it for me then. Hard to point to any one thing, but the degree of unfamiliarity was in the mix. Or maybe I’m just over grinchy. Never mind, I know that part to be true.

Beyond the music, the presentation in the hosted segments really left me…um…cold. I’m by no means saying Audacy is a beacon of engaging personalities any more. But sheesh, I’d have rather had all liners than what was coming from the iHeart hosts. And I use the term hosts quite loosely. An old Atari 2600 game has more engaging personality.

I hear ya. I fully appreciate that they did this extra week but it was a little cringey at times--like when I heard a jock tell everyone the story of where the "Christmas Story" cast is today, almost a full week after anyone would care to know. I thought it might make sense for them to just go jockless for the extra week but then I wondered whether I felt that way because I'm aware that the jocks aren't sitting in a studio talking at me in real-time, as opposed to the typical non-radio geek listener who may very well appreciate the attempt at interaction. Still, it's a long way from "Hit me up on the request line at 800-283-1061."

Looks like WISX kept their soft lean. Looking at the playlist today, still very soft for an AC and definitely softer and older than B101 stlll. So no after Christmas tweak to mainstream AC as even I had speculated.
