106.7 Flips Friday At 1:06 PM

I didn't count the bells, but they missed an opportunity. After the bells ended they should have played an old Beverly Hillbillies clip of Jed Clampett saying "there's them bells again, Granny."

Estimating 15 songs an hour, for 24 hours, equals 360 songs a day ...

Divide 10,000 by 360 and you get rounded 28 days.

But who knows. It's Modern Country ... I didn't know that was even a format. They will probably loop the playlist since there is probably only 100 songs to choose from. It's horrible.

Here comes another failed format. Back in Z-107's heyday in the 80's, the competitors were: WIOV, then a sleepy local Ephrata station that was automated much of the time, WGTY (starting in 1984), a good station but only 10,000 watts on the old tower in Gettysburg, and Country 102, again a good local station, but just 3000 watts in Carlisle.
Since then, BOB came on with a big signal, GTY upgraded to 50K, and IOV became a much better station and raised its tower height, vastly improving its signal. GTY is extremely local to York/Adams with excellent local news. The new "Z" is saying they are "Harrisburg's" new choice, apparently not targeting York. Harrisburg already has 2 established Contemporary Country stations. Bets on how long till they try something else?

Well, nothing could perform as poorly as Cool Pop or Channel. This is a big station and should have a big format, not a niche format that belongs on a class A or translator. Playing 10,000 songs in a row will get a lot of sampling. Here's the great thing: they don't have to win big to be effective. Simply minimizing the impact of BOB or GTY will add to Cumulus's bottom line.

Which means the first lyrics ever uttered on "Z Country" are "You're not supposed to say the word 'cancer'." Great.

I heard that, and my first thought was "Wow, what a downer." I understand the point of that song, but wasn't there a more upbeat, happy song about Country music they could have played?

Really, though, it doesn't matter what they started out with. There were no Country fans listening at that time, I'm guessing, except for the people on this board, and the now-former Channel 106.7 listeners would have hated whatever they played.

And minimizing IOV's bottom line will have a negative impact....

That statement is crazy! Is one Cumulus station going to go into clients and trash another? Of course not!!! The more country shares, the more radio shares a company can control in a market, the better whether it is by one station or two or four. I swear, by some of the statements made on this board, you'd think it was 1984 when there was one FM and one AM per owner per market. Even if you hurt a station, wouldn't it make sense to grow your influence and revenue share in market #80 (Harrisburg) and # 107 (York) at the slim possibility of a little hurt in market #112 (Lancaster)? Of course, this battle will have no effect on WIOV in Reading.

Bob's a strong brand. I doubt this station will have much impact. GTY is vulnerable. Remains to see how much. Hopefully the impact on IOV will be minimal. IOV has been a cash cow for a long time.

All due respect, I still believe STILL ANOTHER country station will have minimal impact in Harrisburg and York against strongly-entrenched and hyper-local BOB and GTY. I believe the "Z-Country" train pulled out of the station back in the '90s. I agree that Z-107 should have never been changed, but I don't believe you can un-do history at this late date.

Here might have been another winning scenario: Put the Hot 93.5 CHR format on 106.7 and focus on York and Harrisburg with it. KISS in Harrisburg is only a Class A and there is no CHR in York.
Then take the 93.5 signal and turn off the stereo pilot, giving it much better coverage in mono. Put ESPN Sports on it. You now own the market in sports with an FM signal that is, with its antenna height, pretty decent everywhere.

Now put Urban back on 1400 and 95.3 and on 1440. You fully cover the pretty significant audience for Urban in both Harrisburg and York.

That would have been an excellent idea.........as would have putting the X on 1067 and expanding the IOV brand to 105.1 and 1057. But the decision is made..now time will tell how well these decisions will have made sense.

Don't forget that 105.7 WQXA was the only one of the former Citadel stations that had any traction and to move it, even to another class B FM, was definitely a risk.
