106.9 KIFR

Any news? I'm stuck in SoCal right now...

Please tell me the call letters are just placeholders...

If not,

IFR=
I flop right
Instrument Flight Rules (FAA Term)
Infinity's (insert any F word here) Radio
International Flaming Radio
I follow roads
I fly reverse
Internet's flopped Rejects

The combinations are endless... Who cares about call letters anymore anyway?

Maybe it's the second coming of KNAI.

K-InFormation Radio?
______________

But talk stations focus more on call letters than other stations. If the rumors are that the station will be talk, their choice is pretty much between "FM Talk + Frequency" or a set of calls.

> K-InFormation Radio?

That's exactly what I was thinking. "Information" would seem to fit with the rumors of FM Talk.

Any other interpretations? "Isn't Family Radio"?

FR = Free or Free Radio with I possibly being Infinity which it is. But where the hell did you get KIFR in the firstplace???

Infinity registered several Internet domains at the end of July that are (frequency)freefm.com. The frequencies match up nicely with Infinity O&Os that clear Howard - but 1069freefm.com is also in the bunch.

So..."106.9 Free FM", localized as part of a national rollout?
Edited by radioexpat on 10/05/05 04:12 AM.

You are correct sir, but you were a couple minutes late. Beat ya!!!

Re: 106.9 KIFR -- 610 KEAR

> Please tell me the call letters are just placeholders...

It looks like they're just placeholders, with the "FR" derived from "Family Radio." Family Stations still legally owns the station.

Meanwhile, the KEAR calls have been transferred to 610 AM (bye-bye, KFRC).

Infinity will throw new call letters on 106.9 as soon as they have everything in place. Let the countdown begin!

Re: 106.9 KIFR How Bout This...

106.9, KIFR-The InFormeR
Local News and Local Talk.
No word about the Doghouse on the air yet.
I do know they auditioned but no confirmation
on whether they are a shoe-in for the job.
I know I've been pro Doghouse lately, but now I
too wonder if and what is going on. Hollywood seems
a little concerned about the contract and J.V.'s
agent is a little questioned about what content
they will freely be allowed to talk about.

Re: 106.9 KIFR How Bout This...

> I know I'm weighing into this debate late, so perhaps this has all been said before, but...If 106.9 is trying to make a splash and use local talent, it seems to me that it needs to cater to a more sophisticated audience than the Doghouse can provide. If it's REALLY trying to compete with KGO, and not just be another 1.2 rated talk clone, they will need either famous names outside of the normal talk radio circles, or people with some news/talk experience. This still holds if we assume that they want a younger audience than KGO. Howard Stern aside, most 30-something people I know want controversial but relevant content that goes beyond prank calls and poop jokes. People aren't going to care that the talk is in hi-fi stereo. And if they choose the Doghouse just to get people to tune in, Elvis and JV won't last long. Unless those two have changed since I last heard them a few years ago, they're not very articulate when they try to weigh in on current events-related topics. They always sounded to me like two teenage kids talking about who they were going to "vote" for. Remember when KSFO went "Hot Talk" and put J. Paul Emerson on in the morning? His talk was definitely "hot," but he only lasted a few weeks. Of course, Emerson was insane AND racist, so maybe it's not a good analogy.

I have a feeling we're all just guessing about that.

More likely the KIFR calls are a holding pattern, since assigning the KEAR calls to 610 would require 106.9 to become KEAR-FM under FCC rules if no new calls were chosen.

Idiot Free Radio??????? This station will need at least a year to get warmed up in the bay area with all the talk already on AM. Good luck Ken your really going to need it! Here's a free clue: Local, Local, Local!!!!!! Syndicated talk radio shows will kill your station before you even get started.

And whats with the signal of KEAR 106.9? It is like the power of the station has been cut in half from what it was in the south bay and even towards the eastbay. Are the Infinity engineers working on the transmitter and antenna system in preparation for the take over? Or it this just one crappy signal kind of like a paper tiger? Interesting!!!

I think it's always been like that...even at 80kw. On a normal day, driving from my place in winters to woodland, I get KRNO (COL Incline Village, NV via Mt. Rose) clear as a bell...

I went to UC Davis and remember KRNO does have a monster signal. In my apartment, I could pick it up in stereo most days. On my old walkman, I can pick up an audible signal on campus. It does depend on where and when, and in the car it was a battle between KEAR and KRNO. Also KWYL (102.9) beats out KBLX most days out there. Never heard KWNZ over Alice or KBUL over KISQ though in my time at Davis.

I wonder how terrain shielding plays in all of this. At my Aunt's near Stockton I can get KWYL, KDOT (104.5), KOZZ (105.7) and KRNO clearly. Must be Mt. Diablo shielding the SF stations.

"Interim Family Radio (calls)"?

Hey, it could be true. :D
