106.9 WKDN will become IQ 106.9

NXEA said:
Could this then be the beginning of a transition to the 'IQ' brand for the Merlin stations?

We will have WWIQ Camden/Philly, and already have WIQI Chicago. If 106.9 pulls some respectable numbers might we see FM News 101.1 become IQ101.1 and FM News 101.9 become IQ101.9?

They'll have to keep buying stations on the higher frequencies, since an IQ of less than 100 is below average...

how many threads are we gonna have about 106.9 ?
It's an imporant story; and will probably go down as one of the top media stories in Philadelphia this year. A news-talk FM - the first since the old 96.5 WWDB, and one that appears to be gearing up for a serious drivetime news presence.

The other side of the coin is, of course, the demise of a radio station and format that has been a part of the Philly Radio framework for several decades. No matter what you think of WKDN, Harold Camping, and Family Radio, it's longevity in this market is undeniable. How many other formats have lasted that long? KYW? Anybody else?

How much cyberspace have we wasted over the years discussing speculation, griping, and minutia that has never amounted to anything other than..... well.... speculation, griping, and minutia?

The sale to Merlin, and the planned format change deserves the space being given to it; especially when the format change is anticipated on Monday, and with WKDN officially announcing hourly that Sunday, April 15, will be it's last day.

To be fair, WKDN existed for as long as it did only as a vanity project of one organization, not due to any success in attracting a sizable audience as KYW and WMMR did. Did 106.9 ever show up in the ratings at all with the FR format? Though it likely attracted enough believers to pay for its existence, is it really serving the public when a 50kW FM signal with a potential audience of millions is essentially unlistened to and unknown for 44 years? It could have easily been underground rock or dollar a holler for all that time too and still kept the lights on with few noticing. Like 94.5 and 103.9 when they were finally sold and programmed for mass appeal audiences, this will be the first time most have tuned to 106.9 in several generations.

Family Radio will be able to continue its broadcasts via the internet and perhaps AM, and this relatively scarce though ubiquitous FM band resource can make more efficient use of the bandwidth by attracting more listeners using locally relevant programming. Seems like a win-win.

1.) Ratings only make a difference if you are selling commercials. Their license was for non-commercial operation.

2.) 106.9, as with 94.7, these two signals were what they were because they were sufficient signals for glorified repeaters of Oakland. And their idea was, as long as they were bringing in enough revenue from the markets they owned, they were spreading the word.

Ratings may be less vital to noncomms overall, but they indicate how many people you are reaching, which is a metric noncomm operators use to gauge how well they are serving the public and reaching the demographics most likely to donate. Non commercial outlets use ratings all the time to make format and fundraising decisions. Granted, those ratings are more readily available to noncomms today than they were in 1968.

I won't be able to listen at midnight, so I hope someone is rolling tape. Where's Julius with his roll tape requesting thread when you need him?

WKDN will probably get the highest ratings at 11:59 tonight during the final minutes of WKDN

This is the biggest day in Philly radio since the day WYSP became WIP-FM
