1060 WIXC - Changes

I heard some dead air this morning, for almost 35 minutes! During 50KW time, too. Where is Fennessy? If he cannot keep the content flowing and on-air, how does he expect to get anywhere. This was at 10:15 this morning! Someone should have been there by then! Where was the weekend guy? Do they have a weekend guy? PATHETIC!

Here is the best advice I can give: Turn everything off, lock the door, and just give up!

Oh hell no, stay on the air if for no other reason than to irritate Spanky :)

Oh Spanky...I know exactly what I was doing at the time. I was boarding up the windows, and getting ready to slit my wrists. Thank God there are people like yourself, who can hear something on the radio, and immediately know what the technical logistics are, and, have a thorough understanding of the culture of radio operations in the new century. Otherwise, we'd all be lost.

This is unbelievable. 203 posts for a station no one listens to.

You are very wrong and obviously don't read the post because there is at least ONE listner... "Spanky" He even knows when there is dead air on Sunday mornings

The reason so many of us are fascinated by WIXC is that it has a lot of capability. You don't find this much interest in all the 1-kw AM daytimers littering the radio landscape, but this one... this one just might be able to resurrect itself and be a real player again.

And--hey, Kevin--knowing that there's a real "radio guy" in there putting the SOB back together and getting it pointed in the right direction makes it even more interesting. This could actually work.

Finally, having Fennessy occasionally checking in here providing updates gives all of us backseat drivers a legitimate sense of how the process is unfolding. No, there ain't no magic wands. But watching the pieces in this rebuilding project fall into place is pretty cool.

1060/WIXC is the reality show for radio junkies.

From What I hear 1060 has brand new studios. and Local News hosted by Liz Litterello who should be in the near future hosting her own talk show again..10 60 may become a terrific station again for the Brevard County Area.

Just don't try to listen to it while driving down any Melbourne or Palm Bay road that has power lines running beside it. Oh, wait, that would be all of them ;)

WIXC may be shooting 50kw out to the Bahamas but they have a really poor signal in much of Brevard county. 250,000 of the 480,000 residents wouldn't listen to it. I don't understand why the south-bound signal, in particular, needs to be stepped down so much. They ought to have a good strong reliable signal at least to the county line, and they don't even during the 50kw period.

I was sorry to see the local high school sports go though, because it was good local programming. I'm not sure why they let that go because that could be sold and right now I only hear PI spots when I tune them in. Anyone know why they pitched it? Perhaps it was too tied in to the old sports format?

;D I'll take those 400,000 odd listeners!!

So, I was a little harsh. However, I am from the "real radio" days that even 30 seconds of dead air means lost revenue. And, I was taught that any dead air is very bad. I apologize for my harsh remarks. It was just a natural reaction as I do when I hear any station with dead air. No hate meant towards Fennessy or his crew, as it may have sounded like.

:D Me too, Dead air used to be a monumental sin..It was cause for people to hit that button to change the station..Now it's just something for old radio geezers like me to wonder what happened?

When I started in radio in the early 70s, dead air and "train wrecks" were the unpardonable sins...To me, it still sounds unprofessional when I hear either on any station. However, with budgetary contraints, we are forced to use automation as a means of keeing a station on the air, and unless the software is preprogrammed perfectly, there will be the occassional dead air and "train wreck". If we ever return to a time when a live person is operating the Board, I think we will hear tighter boards once again in action...

Isn't there any way for WIXC to apply for a change in the directionality of their signal? There are no signals I know of south of Brevard county that need protection. It's hard to understand why someone would invest in a 50kw transmitter and all the juice to run it and not even have decent coverage of one entire county. Yes, brevard is 70 miles long but that's a lot of power and the signal is not at all what you would expect. Either something isn't set right, or the FCC has really put them on an extraordiarily short chain.

Mark, is WELE still on Old US1 in DB? I remember that little building when I worked at Channel 2 WESH in Holly Hill..I also question that 50 KW deal..Why do they have such severe limitations on coverage..God, Back in the day 60's I would have loved to have that 50 KW in Brevard County..That would be a license to print money!

WELE is the former WDAT physically located at 432 South Nova Road, Ormond Beach. We operate with 5kw-D, 2.5kw-N; DA-2 and have a pretty decent 24-hour signal over East Volusia County covering from Palm Coast to the North down past Edgewater to the South. We get out into the Ocala National Forest pretty well during the day... Our format is News-Talk-Sports...

I think the signal problem with 1060 is most likely the ground system. Those five in-line towers and grounding has been in place since the early 70s, and, to my knowledge, is in need of much repair. That's just my best guess... It actually had a better signal when it was 10kw-D; 5kw-N; DA-1, although it does have a decent signal into Daytona Beach during the daytime now...

Also, I'm not sure what station(s) 1060 is protecting to the South during the day, but to the North it is protecting WROS-AM 1050 Jacksonville. During critical hours and at night it is protecting co-channel 1060 Philadelphia...

I have not been down to South Florida in about 5 years but I used to be able to pick up 1060 as far south as Sunrise Fl.

Rumor mill has it that Genesis (Bruce Maduri) is looking for replacement of the GM for 1060. Anyone hear that? Might be lookin to go back to Country Classic............

It's my understanding that the format will stay the same, no discussion of any change, not sure where you got that. They are not looking for a GM, like so much of radio this was only a downsizing of Managment

Thanks PaperBill for that clarification. I heard the rumor from several sources that Fennessy was either leaving or soon to be leaving. I just find it strange that he gets hired and not given very much time to try and make things work. Sounds like some knee jerk reactions on part of owner of Genesis.
