1110 WKZV

In the parking lot at Robinson town Center today 1100 WTAM was blasting in loud and clear, nothing on 1110.

Did they maybe just run out of money and pull the plug?

I'll give Mike a call tomorrow or Friday and see what's up.

I was listening to them on Sunday, they kept blinking off for 10-15 seconds at a time before
coming back on. So that seems likely.

I have to laugh, everytime WKZV hiccups or burps a new thread is started on this message board, Oh I wonder what's happening, oh they must be going dark, oh me, oh my. You'd think the geniuses that hang out here would have something better to do that to monitor a rim-shot, one lung, nothing radio station.
There has been so much speculation, so many predictions, is she going to sell, is she going out of business, how much is she asking for it.
You vultures circling out there, ready to pick at the the broadcast bones, you'll get her radio station when you pry it out of her cold dead fingers.
Now why not go and find something constructive to post about.

Hey...I meant no gile...just curious why they were off the air. When I'm on the road ( I'm a TV sales rep) I rather listen to locally owned stations that provide local content ...1110 is one station I dial up from time to time.

You may be missing the point. We all lament the loss of any radio station. Especially one that, not too many years ago, actually had an impact on the city of license. No one is going to buy this station. Its only value is the transmitter site...and that may not be much.

I, for one, feel bad about the state of AM radio in general.....KDKA has Tradio on Saturdays.........

I concur. When 1110 was riding high I was at 950 WLIT in Steubenville. we didn't have ratings but we had a focused staff and we were making money...billing on average $25k a month. as I recall KEG was doing the same thing. Not bad for daytimers back in the late 70's!

I got my start at KEG... it was an amazingly professional small operation in the early 80's. That's why I continue to follow its progress, and I'm disappointed to see the state it's in now.

WLIT was a very good little station considering its limitations and the size of the market, not to mention the economic situation
in Steubenville.

When I arrived at LIT the economy wasnt the problem. Weirton Steel had 17,000 working in the Mill and Wheeling Pitt was around 15,000 as I recall. The problem was that under the previous owner WLIT wasn't programmed and sold properly..Once the new ownership ( Including Calvin Dailey ) took over we were able to get a better product on the air and sales picked up dramatically. We started Top 40, slowed down to Chicken Rock and eventually switched to Country before the sale in '82. This was when ROCKY 103 hit the air and audience was starting to shift to FM

Radio Realist, I presume? Back under a different brand, I'm sure?

You're missing the point of this whole thread. This is about a radio station that has been for the last decade, fighting to stay alive. Many owners would have given up and shut the thing off. These people are old-school broadcasters, locally owned, and they're strongly committed to what they're doing. Not only that, they actually CARE about their people. They're first-class good people who just happen to own a radio station that's facing certain challenges, and much of the reason behind it all is because they've been burned by a lot of people they trusted. I know of one person who tried to ruin them and came very close to doing it.

There's a lot of "vultures" out there who want to be their 'friend' because they own a station. You own or control a radio station, you find out that you'll have friends you didn't know you had...for one reason. Greed. But...there's also a lot of people out there who do like these people and are looking out for them and the station. It's my understanding also that a lot of their engineering work has been done for free. That's the kind of people you want to have around.

That said, pick up your negativity and go home.

I would like to add to WKZV memories....I worked at the station in the early days as WKEG...It was a middle of the road format..The whole station was located at the current tower site .As for the equipment then it was not new by any means...The cart machines were spotmasters the type that you had to put the unit into drive to work..We also had a few Rca cartmachines that seldome worked..A few famous people went thru WKEG's door...John Galligher from the old WLTJ...And Ed Sherlock from KDKA..Boy what a voice..He was the program director when I worked there...The present towers are the original ones...The whole station was in the trailer...The offices a production studio an old antique Spotmaster or harris portable unit..2 reel to reals in the bathroom remotely controlled..The studio was originally facing towards the towers..When a lightning storm came in you saw the lightning dance up and down the towers..sometimes dancing between them..Not to mention the noise...WKEG had many formats. The most effective one was country..Back then the collins transmitter had more of its share of problems and it was new. 2 QRK turntables 2 cart machines and a rack mount with 2 reel to reels and the control unit for the transmitter..The board was a radio systems board which then would Q on the air sometimes and the engineer would come in during my shift repairing the board in my lap..Yeh radio in the early days such fun it was...It was live and you could never plan for what may or may not happen next...My air name given to me by the station was Bob James..I did weekends..Sine off was also an adventure..WBT in charlotte came thru the monitor even during our sine off and the transmitter was maybe 5 feet away..Pre sun rise was 250 watts and 1kw day..Knowing WKEG's past and what is going on today with WKZV and the present economy..It's time to let it go...It served washington pa well but to put alot of money into a total run down station isnot wise...Sure someone may buy the station and put alot of money into it, But are you willing to wait on your return on your investment...And then who knows what the FCC will do with Am radio...Look at the mess we now have with digital tv..I would not do it..A old radio veteran now signing off Bob Scharnhorst..
