I have to laugh, everytime WKZV hiccups or burps a new thread is started on this message board, Oh I wonder what's happening, oh they must be going dark, oh me, oh my. You'd think the geniuses that hang out here would have something better to do that to monitor a rim-shot, one lung, nothing radio station.
There has been so much speculation, so many predictions, is she going to sell, is she going out of business, how much is she asking for it.
The vultures circling out there, ready to pick at the the broadcast bones, you'll get her radio station when you pry it out of her cold dead fingers.
Now why not go and find something constructive to post about.
Whereas I have to laugh every time some one comes on a radio board and complains that the topic being discussed is radio.

Welcome back, Talk Dude.

Huh? I didn't get back from a two week timeout until I logged in today, though technically I could have come back on Friday.

I picked up "KZ Country" on my way to a day-after-Christmas party on the West End. Signal wasn't the greatest but it seemed clean and the musical variety wasn't bad if you're into country songs as old as some of the stuff the "Pittsburgh oldies" crowd puts out. The DJ also was talking about road conditions given the impending storm along the Eastern Seaboard, which could mean he has at least Internet access to updated news. Can't give too much analysis as I didn't stay with it very long but it sounded just fine all things considered.

I Picked up WKZV on Christmas Day at 3:30 pm at the Intersection of Rt 88 and 51, in South Hills ,Loud and clear playing Christmas Music the DJ gave a Weather Forcast and commented on the snow.

He might have a personal internet connection of his own through a cell company. I don't see the owners springing for that. Notwithstanding, very nice touch.

Is it the Snow , Cold weather or The Great Job HWPR is Doing With the Transmitter of WKZV . Their Signal is Strong in North Hills ie Passavant hospital Area.

Hi Clark, Another one bites the dust..1400 Wobg is done...Its been off the air for over a year..Its located in Clarksburg WVA...Have ever heard anythigf about Ed Shurlock? Graftons 95.9 has quire the signal now with 6kw..We might have survived if we had that kind of power when we owned it..As for WKZV in Little Washington Pa. I looked into buying it...There is alot of problems there...She wants big bucks for the station 200k and no tower site..She wants to lease the tower site to the new owner...Much of the equipment is the same gear that was there when i worked there in1973. As for grafton its really bad there..I looked into buying 1190 there which was on 1260 originally..I has a 4500kw signal day and 25 watts night..It was sold to a religious outfit in Morgantown for59k. How are you doing? I havent heard form you in quite sometime...Ps before I forget Grafton is still using the tower I put up in 1979..Hope to hear from you soon. Bob Scharnhorst [email protected] :) :)

[/quote] Looks like Greed to me, With the Outlet mall their and a new Ramp to Interstate 79, The Tower Site will Be Worth Big Bucks. And the New Owners of 1110 WKZV will have to find a new Tower Site.

as I racall the land the Xmiter sits on is worth more than the rest of the station. hell the tubes for the transmitter are worth more than the station without the land. it's time for somebody to just pull the plug and put the old station out of its misery.

On my way back from the Wheeling Nailers 2nd round playoff game last night (Wheeling 3 Greenville, SC 2) I noticed that both of the WKZV towers were dark. Since they are a daytimer I wonder if they even have a tower light monitoring system. That's all they need, a $25K fine.

WWCS still has only one tower lit.

In some cases the Commission is allowing directional AMs to only light one tower...saves on energy consumption. But you do have to get permission first.... :p

This is easy to get unless you are near an Airport. The FAA usually makes the "tallest" tower with in a certain distance stay on at night and painted (unless strobed) but most of the time, the "shorter" towers can get a waiver (no tower lighting bill and NO PAINTING). I worked at an FM station that had a 215 foot tower on top a very high ridge (at least 600 ft higher than town about 3 miles away). There was a 300 + foot cable tower with lights about a mile away. The owner got permission from the FAA to turn off the towers lights before 1992 when I started there. The medical evac helicopters came very close several times but close does not count.

That's the problem. There's little chance that a commercial airliner will hit a short tower. A medical helicopter is another matter.

If you go to the Radio Pros/Engineering thread on this board, under the topic "1kw AM transmitter," there's a good discussion of low-cost kilowatt all solid-state boxes. The Armstrong rackmount 1kw is about $8000 and was designed by one of our local engineers, a very good guy. A couple of nearby stations have installed the Armstrong with good results. It tends to be a little fussy about the load, so it's best for non-DA AMs or simple directionals where the antenna system is in relatively good shape. It's loud, clean and reliable. The Nautel J-1000 is way more expensive at almost $14K but you get what you pay for.

If WKXV is still running some old tube rig, that's nuts. The tube and power costs would be more than offset by running the solid-state option. If WKXV has a DA typical of smaller directional stations, meaning not-maintained/decrepit, the Nautel is the proper choice, since it's more forgiving.

They're a 2-antenna DA with a ground network that's likely a mess.

But the whole problem there is that they won't spend on anything. They still rewind carts, by some accounts.

We had an FM country Class A up in this neck of the woods that recently changed hands. Not only were they still playing carts - on mono Tapecasters - they were still cueing up vinyl records, from their library of LPs and 45s. (They also had a consumer-grade CD player in the control room and by some accounts, a shareware audio program on a computer in production.)

The music programming system used index cards. The transmitter site was similarly straight out of 1974, approximately when the station went on the air.

If someone is still running a tube transmitter, you're still paying, except your money is going to Duquense Light instead of your facility. You pay either way. At least with a new solid-state rig you get to write off the depreciation expense. The maintenance headaches and hunting up obsolete parts and expensive tubes go away. Doesn't make sense. ???
