3/5 Hiring A New Meteorologist

I think the point is not to tell others, but to internalize it. So, when you think of AZ Family, you think "oh yes, that's the one who has First Alert Weather forecasts" or 1"2 News does a number of charitable events during the year" or "ABC15 has the most accurate forecasts". I don't generally have a conversation with my friends about these brands, but I might mention a report that I saw on Channel 15.
Exactly!

The only reason I might use something other than a channel number to identify a station is when I am referring to a station to a friend who lives in another city and I don't know their network affiliation. I don't commit their brand to memory and certainly not the internal brands of their generic weather or news reports.

While mentioning Gray Corp. earlier in this thread... If sister stations, KTVK Ch. 3 & KOLD Ch. 13 both report current weather conditions around Arizona. Wouldn't it be simple to share those current temperatures/ dew points, etc.?
We frequently visit family in Sierra Vista, AZ. Tucson KOLD live reports Sierra Vista, Bisbee / Douglas weather during its newscasts. Why in the name of "Jim Howl" can't KTVK/ KPHO give Sierra Vista present conditions? Isn't it easy to share data among corporate sisters?
I have written to Ian Schwartz and Royal Norman via Twitter and the Sierra Vista current temp remains blank.
Do any of you know how to get KTVK/ KPHO's attention?

I have lived in AZ virtually my entire life (since before TV) and in both central (Phoenix) and south (Tucson) broadcast areas. KOLD has always been as one of several stations whose primary reporting area is from Casa Grande to the Mexican border. The Phoenix based stations seemed to own everything north of that.

It wasn't unusual for a Tucson station to report news/weather from other parts of AZ but unless it is big negative news the Phoenix stations usually don't cover Southern Arizona stories very well. There seems to be a historical bias/competition between the two cities beginning when Tucson landed the UofA and Phoenix got the insane asylum (although at one time both KOLD, originally KOPO, and KOOL-TV, now KSAZ, were sister stations, both CBS affiliates).

If you google the two stations you will find their contact information. The other alternative, and possibly better one, is to access the national weather services available on the Internet.

Wait a second here...Phoenix stations do a much better job of giving temperatures throughout the state. They might not report every city, but they are going to have a temperature somewhere in SE Arizona usually. We had a thread on this board a number of years ago that pointed out that the Tucson stations literally blank the Northern half of AZ on their weather maps. I noticed that was true on my next visit to Tucson. Perhaps that it changed now. As some have pointed out, it's pretty easy to get any forecast on your cell phone these days.

@fusejockey, the reason that Tucson stations give the Sierra Vista forecast is because Sierra Vista is part of the Tucson tv market. Conversely, the Phoenix stations tend to give more weather detail in N Arizona because most of N Arizona is part of the Phoenix tv market.

Yay! Holly is now in the commercial. I am so much more engaged now that they call it "First Alert Weather"! -- said with appropriate sarcasm.
I saw Holly Bock last night at the start of 3TV's 8PM newscast out in the field reporting on the extreme heat & the number of deaths in Maricopa County.

There's a new service announcement featuring the First Alert Weather Team. Subject is about watching children around water. VERY important.

Royal, Sean, April, Paul, and Ian are there. No Holly or Steven.

This morning, on Saturday 7/23, there was no dedicated weather person in sight. Poor Kylie had to do double duty and, because there were actually unexpected showers in the area, couldn't really keep up with the weather.

Very poor representation by the "First Alert" Weather Team. What kind of total BS is this? Royal and team should be ashamed!

Again, on Sunday 7/24, nobody from the "Last Alert" weather team bothered to show up. While under normal circumstances, this wouldn't be a major problem. However, THEY declared today a "Last Alert" day!

I will note that 12 News had a 30 minute newscast this morning, yet had Krystle there live with the forecast. Even with Lindsey Riley on maternity leave, 12 had a dedicated weather person there!

Holly is doing the 6 PM news tonight. April did the evening newscasts last night.

Somebody needs to put these poor weather-guessers on some kind of schedule. I know people take vacations, especially those with kids, and school starting soon, but this is ridiculous!

As long as the various weather guessers are good at their jobs what difference does a static rotation make? Frankly, here in the PHX metro I really doubt the necessity for weather guessers at all.

I *thought* weekend GMAZ was getting better until the new weather guy asked Kylee how to pronounce "Havasu". Waiy...what? Nobody gave him a quick lesson in how to pronounce city names? Again, a huge failure of the "Last Alert" team!

No big deal. I've lived here forever and am still waiting for any TV 'personality' to properly pronounce "Mogollon" - it's MUGGY-own.

Are you certain it's not MON GO LIAN???? :) LOL
When I first moved here, I thought it was MONGOLIAN! I still just say "The Rim". I still won't try to pronounce that one!! 🤣

That said, when I move to a new area, I listen to the news and weather anchors to find out how to pronounce city names. Obviously, the new guy didn't do that.

I always envision Royal Norman takes a new weather person into an office with a dry erase board. Royal has all of the names of various Arizona places written phonically and Royal has them practice 100 times. "It's not Prescott, it's Prescott!"

Success! Holly Bock now has a First Alert Weather and Traffic spot. Now we need a commercial where all seven participate.
