Re: WNYG memories (a classic thread hijack)

Jesus, I have 10,000 memories in that place

I remember all the cartoons we put on the wall and doctored to reflect our strife.. or the soda machine that gave free refills... just kept spitting out Pepsi cans until it ran dry.

The record room we would search thru looking for the "good" oldies (mostly records that came from WGLI).

Racing reports, Rush Traffic, Harry Hepcat's "Sea Cruise" record hanging from the nail. The photos of wanna-be doo-wop groups and some legit. The lockers, "C.A.B.", LA Airforce production package. Music 40% Voice 80%, the Dokorder.

The station where everyone was the engineer. Sing-A-Long with Frankie C (to kill a half hour). Guns & Roses on "Carte Blanche" Sunday Nights. The Scully that shared a pot with 10 other things you needed at the same time. A, A+, B, C, DW (am I missing any 45 catagories?). The yellow EBS lights that we could activate from the console (how cool?.. running the CBS-FM jingle out of the test) . The SILENT SLEEVE breaker. CNN news and the -10 noise floor from the satellite. WNYT.. no, wait, WNYG. Techni-Weather with Mr. Bill. The one-armed chair for Chipper, the cheesy Radio Shack cue speaker from 1902... the RCA speaker in the lobby from 1802. The "activity" in the attic. Saturday nights with HH, The Popcorn Polka. The index cards (who said "Honey" after "The Men In My Little Girl's Life" is a bad segue?) "In My Life" and the infamous Warren typewriter. The PD's office that doubled as a bedroom. Listener Appreciation Night on the couch. Halloween Radio Theatre. 45's at 33 (right back where we started from). "From The Paid to the Unpaid". "Then & Now Top 10". "Country Sue" and later "Country in NY". "Crusin' with Speedy" Victory Iced Tea. Breaking the Autogram meters. The GREEN lightbulb that was supposed to be an On Air Light. "The Blind Spot". Mighty Mac, Lenny Cocco, Phyllis Rose, Jim Pierce, Maniac Mike, Chipper, Sean Vesley, Big Ed Newlands, Frankie "The Love Sponge" (sorry) Foglia, Harry Hepcat

What have I told you about hanging out in the studio.... And... for God's sake, let's all remember the golden rule!!!!!

As is turns out...the "request line" is the cell phone number of the new owner! This guy bought the station as a "hobby" so it should be interesting to see what he does. Is a LMA in the works, or just time brokering? Should be interesting to see what LI radio people end up there!
______________

Damn it, we had a VARIANCE

To be fair, this test was conducted at 1am, well in the testing safe harbor and was performed for only a few minutes. I was in Bethpage with Rick and Jim was operating the Foodarackacycle at WNYG. Bill was, of course, in Frack PA.

Re: WNYG memories (a classic thread hijack)

OK..what hasn't been covered yet?

Vintage story--before our time--Muriel evading the IRS through the basement.

"Don't play in production"

Santa came home drunk

THIS DOOR MUST REMAIN CLOSED AT ALL TIMES!!!

"Signed, The Girl who didn't get the memo"

"The records are now alphabetical"
"OK....But how do I find the one that I want?"

The Ford Pacer

Grazin' In The Grass

"I didn't know it was your last show until I picked up our signal.....about 200 ft. down the street!"

The LNG/NYG synergy (voices heard on both stations at one time or another): Ed Newlands, Frank Foglia, Mike Erickson, Neil Machhio, Harry Hepcat, Frankie 'C', Bob Aldrich, Jim McGahn, Jim Pierce (and even Mike Dragon, IIRC, although this is a blurry memory and not a documented fact.)

Most of WLNG's currents during the 1990/1992 era were actually carted at WNYG! (Frank Foglia might shed some more light on this)

The 7-11 remotes

The Chevy's Bel-Air cafe remotes

Tim Rechter's last show.

And of course, the greatest radio prank of all time: "THIS BUILDING FOR SALE!"

Keep going..I'm sure there's more...

Yes I can. Due to the wonderful production equipment that was located on Redwood Rd, I carted up the currents for the "Big Sound Survey" in WNYG's production studio and gave them to Big Ed on Friday nights before my shift. At first I recorded them in stereo, then one day I heard Gary Sapiane play Impulsive by Wilson Phillips and only one channel of that song was coming out of 92.1's mono signal (the cart machine he used was out of allignment). So after that I recorded all songs in mono. The old RCA turntables had a stereo/mono switch inside them for the records I used, and any tape or C/D I carted up was done courtesy of a Y adaptor I brought in that mixed the channels together. The things I did for both those places. And like I said in an earlier post, what I wouldn't do to go back again. WNYG and WLNG(although I really didn't work at WLNG, but was once offered a job there by Paul & Bob) was like a weekly addiction for me. And I have been on the wagon way too long.

Re: WNYG memories (a classic thread hijack)

No one has mentioned yet the sale of the FM. And the story of the day that WBAB FM was no longer transmitting from the WNYG Tower. While the FM elements were covered somewhere way up in this thread, the story remains untold. From what I have heard it was quite an outrageous day.

How many Bill Jacquemin's do you think there are? :)

Re: WNYG memories (a classic thread hijack)

I think you used the same Y jack to mono the stereo radio at Hero Express, which did not have a mono switch when listening to CBS-FM (what else back then?)

Speaking for those of us alumni that have posted here so far, all I can say is that the FM sale was waaaaay brfore our time (1979, was it? I'm not sure).

I've heard plenty of stories about the "old" days of NYG/BAB, but honestly, I don't recall ever hearing about the switchover day. What have you heard, Russ?

What I did there was combine the speaker lines coming out of that home stereo unit in order to have it in mono so you would not get half a song in the kitchen area and the other half in the dining room. But that was wrong although at the time I did not know it. You can combine the line out from a stereo component to create mono, but if you combine the amp out (which goes out to the speakers) it will eventually burn out the amp. And that's exactly what happened to it.

Yeah, it was a long time ago. I only brought it up because there had been one or two other things mentioned from before youz-guys' time. It was certainly a momentous point in the history and development of Both Stations.

WBAB really has some unique history to it. I believe it was the first FM on Long Island to operate FM Stereo. I also believe WNYG was the only AM station on the Island that promoted itself at one point (during Bienvenida) as being AM Stereo but actually never was.

That's Ironic....it seems that Beinvineda was promoting WNYG as a radio station when, in reality, it seemed like it was
an Immigration Half-Way House.

Trust me....I saw the basement after they vacated the premises.

Actually they're still trying to master single channel audio thru the bandwidth of that antenna system.

I can't believe our clapped together airchain in 2000. It was actually good enought to pierce (no pun intended) thru the mud on that channel and kick butt. For all our sakes, that airchain still exists (CRL AGC-400 / CRL SEP-400 / Alesis Reverb / Realistic EQ / Moseley TAL 310 limiter / CRL LPF-300 NRSC box). We actually fed the pre-emphasis before the CRL SEP-400... which does a great job at HF pre-emphasis overload management.

Re: WNYG memories (a classic migraine)

Fond memories of the Hore-house? You must all be popping pills, or worked there after Muriel sold the place.

It was the worst-run station I've ever been with, from Muriel wondering why I'm using the copier ("Do you think you're making too many?") to calming Kathy down after another Horenstein memo ("If the paychecks bounce....if the studios don't work..if you don't like working here, LEAVE!") to trying to run a multiple commercial break on a single cart machine (it's easy, you just have to TALK between every spot).

I did meet some good people and some real losers. There were good moments, and I will recall those. But there will never be a totally pleasant trip down memory lane for me, sorry!
Edited by gumbo on 01/21/06 10:05 PM.

Somewhere I have a copy of that memo.....you quoted it word for word...good memory!

Ed, I can understand your hatred of the place, but since you were out of there in 1988, and we lasted until April 17th, 1994. You weren't there to take part in the "insanity-to-stay-sane" period.

Nowhere did you see us praising Muriel, did ya? Geezuz Christ, man.....WE PUT THE DAMN BUILDING UP FOR SALE the day we left! Would we have done that to show our RESPECT for the lady? (If you don't know what we're referring to, then hit www.wackradio.com and search through the WNYG pics.)

We loved the place for the people we worked with, and NOT the ownership. The only reason that we all lasted until the end was because we loved each other (for the most part) and we loved what we were doing. THAT is passionate radio. That could explain why, after all of these years, that we all still either work together or keep in touch with one another. That's worth plenty to me, as I'm sure it is to the others who have posted here.

In closing...."This has been a Silly News Bulletin. We now return you to your relative state or normality."
