91.5 on the air

I noticed it popped up around 7PM on Saturday.
At first I thought it was an overpowered Christmas display soundtrack.
Sounds like bad muzak.
It's bleeding all over Dublin.

who is: ROBERT G CASAGRANDE of CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING SERVICES, INC.

It's really a shame that one of the local colleges couldn't get ahold of this signal. Hopefully Rob has some say in what happens with it. Last thing we need is a 15kw religious station.

well right now its 15kw of Easy Listening/Light AC/MOR type format... with no ids just PSAs and music (they do legal id at the TOH)

I drove from Worthington to Reynoldsburg yesterday and the signal came in strong the whole ride home. Now I almost fell asleep listening to it but at least it isn't another religious format.

Sounds like they hooked up a laptop directly to the transmitter and playing back mp3's. I sure hope they improve the audio quality before they launch whatever format they have planned for it.

I tuned in for a few minutes yesterday and the announcer referred to it as "WINF." ?????

They have rebroadcast WINF a couple of times since on the air. Most of the time it is just random music with TOH "WHKC Columbus" announcements. Today they were playing a bunch of 80s music. Still testing, I guess.

I hope 91.5 stays the way it is. I was driving down 315 and for a minute I thought I was driving home from Ohio State listening to 92-X. Too bad rock music with a Top-40 beat is practically non-existent these days. Alternative music, country music and black music are mostly pretty annoying these days.

I was surprised that the signal is as bad as it is, though. I was at Ohio 104 and US 33 and lost stereo in my Acura with a Bose Stereo. They broadcast from WSYX, so thats only 3 miles away. In fact, you have to be pretty high up on a freeway ramp, or on the straightaway or the stereo fades. You would think 15 kw in flat Columbus would give a better signal.

I hope 91.5 stays the way it is, but I'm curious to see what Rob Case has in mind. Could he ...

1. Sell to WOSU? ..... WVXU sold to the owners of WGUC for 10 or 15 mil?

2. Swap with WCVO? Case could take the 104.9 signal and program it or sell it ... WCVO gets more wattage and they're non-profit anyway ... do they run commercials?

3. Here's one to get you hobbyists thinking ... a three-way swap involving TED-FM, WCVO and WHKC!

4. Translator for WXOL?

#2 is an interesting thought. As I mentioned in another thread, Case licensed WHKC 91.5 as "CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING SERVICES, INC." Theoretically, as a class B licensed to Columbus, HKC should have much better coverage that WCVO, a Class A licensed to Gahanna. (HKC's service contour map looks pretty solid -- see http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1126714.html )

Re a potential switch for WCVO to the non-comm band ay 91.5...don't they air commercials? I just assumed they did, but I don't pay much attention to them.

WCVO is licensed as Commerical now at 104.9 and does air call to actions...

Two different Christmas Light Display transmitters are forced to move off of 91.5 FM after WHKC signs on.

It looks like Rob LaRe of Pickerington, Ohio had to find a 'NEW' clear frequency for his musical soundtrack of Synchronized Light Display of 13 Houses in Pickerington after WHKC signed on the air.

Also, wasn't 91.5 also used by a pirate radio operator a few years ago??

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15876849/

"It's taking place on Hail Ridge Drive in Pickerington and the musical soundtrack can be heard on 91.5 FM."

AND

Click here for the article on the State Auto Nativity Display in downtown Columbus:

http://www.aroundrr.com/Calendar/viewEvent.asp?ID=26849

"The public is invited to attend the official lighting of the display on Wednesday, December 6, with a ceremony beginning at 5:45 p.m. Other Central Ohio Choral Groups will perform weekend evenings from December 9 to December 23. When you arrive, tune to 91.5 FM to hear the choirs, and other sounds of the season."

I've been testing the signal around town and I must say I'm impressed. I wish somebody had some kind of info on whats in store for 91.5.
