91.5 on the air

Will it really be a surprise what they do with 91.5? The same thing they did with 101.9 WINF and 95.1 up north probably. Play this mix of music for a few months until they attract a small audience and get some buzz going, then switch over to Christian programming. And if they get another frequency, guess what will happen with that one?

Are you really sure about that? With Rob Case at the controls? They guy who ran the Power Pig ... Hot 105/107 ... Radio Sol/WXOL ... 1540 AM WNRE? A Catholic boy is going through all this effort to give some holy rollers a new radio station?

** If he were smart, he will sell it off to WOSU or trade it for WCVO. $10-15 million is chump change for the university. But then again, who knows?

** Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ... somebody can look up the financials for Spirit Communications. They are a non-profit, so they have to report everything. I haven't had time to look, but someone creative will be able to find a copy of their Form 990 IRS Tax Return somewhere on the web. There used to be a site that provided access to the tax returns of non-profits. This should give someone a good idea whether running a music format as a non-profit is financially viable or not. In the non-profit realm, all you have to worry about are revenues.

Look up the salaries of any successful TV preacher ... hell, look Peter Popoff or Leroy Jenkins, even. There is money to be made running a non-profit. Hell, maybe Case's angle is to sell sponsorships like WOSU does, pull out a $500,000 salary and let the rest collect within the entity. It's all legal!

The saga continues .........

I've been testing the signal around town and I must say I'm impressed. I wish somebody had some kind of info on whats in store for 91.5.

Do not agree.

That signal is either highly directional, or it is very short spaced. Driving down the Ohio 104 Expressway this afternoon and and along South High Street (just a couple of miles from the WSYX tower on Stimmel Rd.), the signal sounded like crap ... scratchy like 105.7 when its tower was in Union County. For the sake of comparison, 103.1 (probably the crappiest signal in the market) was coming in LOUD AND CLEAR ... clean signal with full stereo! 103.1!!!!

North of I-70 it sounds okay, but has a tendency to lose stereo at dips in the terrain. This signal is 15 kw at about 750 ft ... which translates to about 33 kw. You would think the signal would be more stable with this kind of wattage.

I don't think they are broadcasting at full power. The building penetration is nowhere near where it should be with this much signal.

Out on the east side, I would guesstimate that 105.7, 103.9 and maybe even 107.5 have a better signal than 91.5 based solely on the stereo fade-out as I was driving around this evening (I'm sure there's a techncal term for this phenomenon, but I don't know it).

I know it's a Class B ... but it sure sounds a lot like a rimshot Class A station right now.

If their signal is crappier than 107.5, that means they're at under 3 kw right now. Is that possible?

Could go to EMF (K-Love satellator) as well. They tried to help Vern Baldwin move in 102.3 Wilmington to rimshot Columbus (Mount Sterling was the proposed COL). Vern took a payoff from the folks in Zanesville to go away.

On an interesting side note, I noticed that the call letters WHKC has a history in Columbus dating back to the 1940's. 610 WTVN used to be WHKC before a 3 city signal swap between Columbus, Cleveland, and Akron.

I also wanted to point out that 89.9 ClassX is a non-commercial station in the Cincy area playing Classic Rock. ;)

I live in Grove City and have been laid up with a knee injury for a week and this station is WONDERFUL!!!!Great song selections. Comes in crystal clear down here in "Grovetucky"!!

I also have a feeling that it might go to EMF.By the way, does EMF run Air-1?I think Air-1 is an awsome network.

Air1 is the sister network to EMF's K-Love. I could easly see 91.5 going to EMF, at least an LMA. K-Love just bought a station near Springfield.... I can see them inching closer to Columbus. Suprised they dont go after AMA's station on 89.1 in Deleware.

I worked at 91.5 in the late '70s when it was WFAC, free access communications.
10 whole watts of power.
Transmitter on the east side, but we had a few listeners.
Fred Anderle was there during the time, Diane Currington, Phil Golavin (producer about town and state), lots of other folks. One really, really good engineer, Mike Vander something. . . He rewired the transmitter and got the full range out of the 10 watts.
It was often very challenging, but it was a lot of fun too.

Broadcasting live today with deejays ....... playing a "different" mix of hits. In the one hour I listened, I heard Kenny Chesney, ***** Cat Dolls, Kelly Clarkson, The Eagles. I heard a few tunes that sounded like country at first and I was afraid they had gone Christian!

Live DJ's, including some chick named Chelsie and some other.

Broadcasting from Delaware ... giving a "740" telephone number for you to phone in requests.

It was Rob Case, old 92X dj in late 70's and former Chopper 4 pilot, on the air. Said he was playing your favorites, back live after the 1st of the year and then flipped back to auto 80's format.

One of the girls on today, Lauren, must be his daughter. She's the one that called him dad. He said they may be on live again tomorrow, but would otherwise be on 80s autopilot until the new year. Should be interesting to see what will happen to this signal. You would think if they were going k-love or satellite, they would have just flipped it on. Who knows? BTW, 740 covers a large area of ohio http://www.nanpa.com/area_code_maps/usmaps/oh.gif Could also be a cell phone.

I enjoy good speculation, but does anyone KNOW anything about what they are doing or going to do? I am really enjoying this 80's stuff and wouldn't mind working there if they plan on adding an airstaff. Contact info is a bit sparce at this point.
