94.5 testing on their new stick

OK...I was eager and willing to give them the benefit of the doubt..still new...trying to get a feel for the town I guess..never mind the music doesn't have any type of flow to it...seems to bounce all over the place..Doors,"Love Me Two Times :) followed by 1910 Fruitgum Company "Simple Simon" ::)...oh wait...I forgot in between those Johnny Cash "I Got It One Piece At A Time" Sorry Guys...you just 'jumped the shark for me"... :'(
Heard "Indian Giver" yesterday afternoon, myself. Heard the Carpenters there this morning!

I think the refreshing thing is that the station has no overly strict playlist. If they can keep the repeats down to a minimum, it will draw a larger audience. I am so not impressed with sound quality of Spider's VTing. Is anyone actually local? Sorry, I haven't listened enough to figure all that out, yet. The buzz is pretty strong about this by actual local listeners. And, no, RQQ hasn't done anything new to "compete."

Where is their studio and/or sales office?

Is there an class increase in the future? IIRC around 1995, 96.5 in Asheville NC (COL Biltmore Forest) signed on as a class A, then after a year or two they upgraded to C3.

this appears to be the final signal...adjacents on 94.3 in Lewisburg and Oak Grove (Clarksville)...94.7 Cookeville and Mayfield (Paducah)
and co-channels in Birmingham and Lexington, KY (among others) have 'em locked in place.

If i read some of their press properly they have a sales office on the row...I sent an email asking where the studios were and if they had live or VT talent...got an answer..asked me if i had an aircheck  said no..but here's my website and show link... ;D they are looking for P/T jocks I understand..they are hitting all over the spectrum with music..without a doubt a plus for tunage starved Nashville...just need to get it flowing better...and yea I agree the "hippie" branding doesn't at all relate to the music..I know they don't want to call it oldies and that's good..but when i hear "HIPPIE" I think immediately of 1967 San Francisco...and the entire "summer of love" thing...and an entirely different genre' of music...hard to follow that hippie voicer with Indian Giver...lol and for all the 94.5 staff..we're not picking on you folks at all...but many of us here on this board have lived and worked for stations that played these songs when they were new...and still think the 54 plus demo is viable in Nashville..so please don't think our comments are negative..just all us old jocks thinking out loud.. ;)

I'm listening right now, and every once in a while, Spider will "announce" a song that he didn't actually play. VT-ing ain't perfect folks! ;D

Some of you are probably taking the "hippie" thing a bit too literally. I get the feeling that this station is for Nashville-style "hippies," and you know who you are. You did your patriotic duty and went to Vietnam, and for that, my hat is off to you. "Hippie" is apparently just the latest "branding" for a format, and it is probably trademarked. Wouldn't that be something? ;D We've had other trademarked format names before, like "Jack" of course, and who could forget "Arrow" back in the '90s? Didn't every major city have an "Arrow" format back about that time?

The listener comments are interesting, but probably old, too. There's the listener who claims that Pasquale's Pizza used to be "where Harding Mall is right now." Only problem is that Harding Mall hasn't been there since it was bulldozed back in 2005!

yea.. again only constructive comments here..just no substitution for live jocks...this stuff can't be vt'ed...and sound right..

all hippies are boomers...but all boomers are (were) not hippies
the brand uses "hippie" and "boomer" interchangeably.
I learned that big college word when I was a hippie...I think.
dude.

Don't know about you but for me Hippie Radio is already beginning to lose its new car smell. Also think they're overplaying the Spider Harrison card. Spider Harrison hasn't been part of Nashville radio in over 30 years. I've seen posts clamoring for the return of Carl P. Can't remember the last time I saw a post asking when Spider Harrison was going to return. Wait, now I remember - NEVER!

I think it is great that they have a wide playlist and are doing something very different with a fun and unique image. I love all the "oh wow" songs they are playing.

But what is the business plan for a station like 94.5. The signal limitations have to make it hard for them to compete in a PPM world. What is the best number you could hope to get, a 1.5? How do you sell it to advertisers?

I've been here since 1986 and I've never heard of Spider Harrison before I saw his name on this thread. As far as Carl P. Mayfield goes, it is my understanding that he has basically BURNT all his bridges in Nashville radio and that no one is willing to work with him in any capacity. Plus, I think he is only interested in working in Country radio.

Yes, the station is being voice tracked. Spider Harrison sounds like he is doing his show from a hole somewhere with all the echo going on. Plus, the website states that he is living in California and doesn't say a thing about him returning to Nashville. And I'm pretty sure that the most of the on-air personalities are also on other "Hippie Radio" stations across the country.

I don't recall this happening but am told Spider was picked to replace John R.UHH when he retired...what other stations did Spider work at in Nashville ? Ive heard the name several times but have never heard him til hippe radio..

Warning: I am trying to recall stuff from the late 1960's and early 70's!!

In the late 1960's until 1970 or 71, WLAC 1510 was News and Blues. A CBS affiliate they did a lot of news during the day. At night WLAC played a Blues orientated R & B. One of the most popular DJ's on 1510 was John R. Then in the early 1970's WLAC hired Dick Kent from WMAK who installed a top 40 to replace the news during the day, keeping the R & B until John R retired then Spider Harrison took the evening shift. With WMAK's tight directional night pattern verses WLAC not so tight pattern Spider Had quite a following in middle Tennessee. No more trying to get WLS or some other station hundreds of miles away.

I won't entirely disagree with you but I won't entirely agree, either. I remember listening to Spider over WLAC back in the late '70s. Even if he was only in his early 20s then, he would still be close to 60 now!

At the same time, if Spider is the "star" of Hippie radio, why did they give him middays? Doesn't the "star" usually get morning drive?

If they really wanted to stir up Nashville radio, they would hire (the recently displaced from 105.9) Mary Glenn! 8)

I heard "Truckin'" by the Dead last night.
Whew! For a long time I've been thinkin' they weren't going to live up to their name. ;D
Far out, man.
If you like, I'll try to see if I can get them to play "Touch of Grey" for you! ;D

"Radio for baby boomers" (of which I am one, albeit just barely) seems to be emerging as their slogan. As I said before, "hippie radio" is a bit of a misnomer.

I would say that you have it right.

Dude out. 8)

As far as Madison avenue is concerned..I am a 'BABY BOOMER", having lived almost 61 years..however..all my friends I grew up with and still talk with..have never used that term to describe ourselves..guess ad suits have to categorize each demo group somehow..but we have never used Hippie or Baby Boomer to "mark our territory"...we all consider ourselves thinking like we are still 18...even if the body won't tolerate it any more.. ;D i can think of several other "branding irons" more appropriate than the ones they are using...
