94.5 testing on their new stick

Tracking of "The Grand Illusion" tonight at 10:00 was an unexpected treat. I've noticed that Hippie, like so many of the better stations back in the day, gets "harder" with their music at night. Many would track a long version at 10:00, or schedule "progressive rock" shows on weekends at 10:00.

I've also come to the conclusion that Hippie is not "Oldies" but rather Retro Top 40, from the years when Top 40 was all over the road. The term "crossover" was unheard of because "Top 40" meant the top 40 records period, no matter the genre.

Is Hippie's signal going to get better within the next few weeks. I can't even hear them in my office, and they cut in and out in South Nashville.

specs i think put them at 443 feet att with 5500 watts..not gonna get inside buildings with that very well..what they need is more coverage need to get the antenna up higher..drive times are their best bet for listeners..offices can get their stream via pc..i lose them in the car headed east at the 109 exit...

Decided to visit the Hippie 94.5 store on their website. All I found was the same ol' Cafe Press logo stuff. No love beads, no roach clips, no black light posters, nothing on organic gardening, and NOT A SINGLE STICK OF INCENSE on the site. Hippie Store, indeed! That couple who used to run the Peace & Love Shop would roll in their graves... oh wait, they're still alive and rolling in the back room... ::)

Definitely Top 40. Today I heard Spider play Janis Joplin, The Carpenters, Jerry Reed, then Elvis. Poking around the WWW it looks like "Hippie Radio" has been trademarked like "Jack FM". The first site I found was 106.9 Hippie Radio in Chattanooga! I'm waiting for "Boss Radio".

Somebody's been watching the Grammys (or maybe listening to the aforementioned Delta stream) and not minding the board, 'cause there's been no audio on 94.5 for a while tonight. The signal's on, but nobody's home.
I saw later on (on their Facebook page) that that was a planned outage. They are probably still getting all the bugs and kinks worked out.

I'm finding references to this Hippie Radio franchise dating back to 2007. I've been listening to Spider Friday and today (I remember him from his 15WLAC days) and he must be VTing. We have had some very interesting weather the last few days that he hasn't mentioned.

Pulling a 97.1 (almost) Played Hugh Masakela, "Grazin' in the Grass" properly VT'd, played "summer inthe City" also p. VT'd, played Hugh Masakela, "Grazin' in the Grass" AGAIN properly VT'd. Thought we wouldn't notice, dincha?

P.S. And WHY do they not let the listeners calling in requests mention the song over the air? Is that another VT quirk?

Yes. VT is done in advance so the music has already been programmed. Unless it is a "request show" a huge percentage of stations have a "preset" music play list. I learned very early (1970's) not to "break" format. Usually before the "errant" song is finished a member of management has either called or walked into the control room and said if you want to continue to get a paycheck do not do it again.

In the past couple of days I've heard Motorcycle Mama, The Rapper, The Name Game, and Timothy. Can DOA and Groovy Grubworm be far behind?

Yeah, they've done a LOT of that lately! At one point over the weekend, the VT was at least an HOUR off!

Makes for old school radio. Nowadays you don't know what song is next or what screw up is next. It's part of the master plan of radio destruction.

Since the last couple of pages of this thread have been rehashes of stuff discussed earlier in this thread, I will break some new ground here.

Apparently, at least the morning show is live. Chris Lucky gave the time at 9:08 and it actually WAS 9:08 at the time! 8) Will miracles never cease?

The traffic report seemed to be an hour (or more) old. No evidence of any wreck at I-40 and McCrory Lane, other than some police activity just east of there.

As a Beatles fan, I am enjoying hearing all the Beatles songs that were NOT singles; many of these haven't been played on the radio in YEARS! 8) (if ever!)

One complaint though: Chris, PLEASE stop talking over every nanosecond of the songs' intros! That is one facet of radio from years gone by that I DON'T miss! ::)
