Re: WFME Format Flip

WRXP 2.0 sounded great everytime I was in the area. Always a nice listen. Very similar to Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia. Honestly I would be happy if either alternative or country were chosen. Both listener groups are loyal and deserve a station. Let's just hope if the go alternative they don't put some goofy morning show on. The key to it all is low key. Unless they brought in Elliott from DC101. Now that might be interesting.

Re: WFME Format Flip

Yes Rock is quite fragmented - my thought is an Alternative leaning rock format of some sort but not strictly alternative. Most every rock format since 1996 has failed in New York City. Whatever the last incarnation of WRXP did, seemed to have potential - climbing from a .6 to a 2.0 - Had they stayed I think that format would have leveled off in the mid to upper 2's.

Basically with rock the best a New York City station can hope for is a 2.5 to a 3.0. With Country the best we can hope for is a 3.0 to a 3.5 (15 years ago the bes we could hope for with country was a 2.5 to a 3.0 but I am willing to up that slightly because I think Country fans will GRAB a NYC Country station and see to it that it has moral listener support).

You land on an important point. Less is more in the alternative world. It's also cheaper...

That's nice and all but I'd still bet a 2.5 WXRP would out bill 3.0 Country station in NY (network potential aside for now) and it's cheaper to market and run. We'll see what happens.

Scott + Todd's Twitter message about 94.7: https://twitter.com/ScottandTodd/status/290782558457851904
They mentioned the simulcast shortly after 7am as well along with Harold Camping's failed end-of-world predictions. Scott said they must have "super-charged" the 94.7 transmitter since he was able to hear it better in Westchester County this past weekend than he had in the past. (I'm in central Westchester County, NY, too.)

As AlNYRadio mentioned, just like Friday night/Saturday morning, the Sunday night/Monday morning signal on 94.7 has been much weaker with no HD lock and barely even registering RDS. It had been much better on Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning/afternoon with HD lock + RDS display. Safe to assume there's some maintenance ongoing.

On Friday morning between 11am-Noon on 94.7 (about 4 hours before the final sign-off), there was a very weak (almost imperceptible) signal of a WPLJ "shadowcast" running about 15 seconds ahead of 95.5's feed *while at the same time* the regular WFME religious format was running at full strength. This was the 1st indication that imminent change was afoot.
Also indicates that there are likely two transmitters in use for 94.7 even now - maybe swapping back and forth during maintenance or maybe one has been (or will be) abandoned in favor of another.

And why not? There are nearly a dozen local pro sports teams.

The key word there is "local". The CBS Sports Network would likely fail in this market because it's all nationally syndicated programming. If someone wants coverage about the Giants they are almost guaranteed to find it on WFAN. But if they tune in to CBS they may be hearing about the Packers or Ravens and tune away.

Back to the call letters thing - for the most part they don't me anything.

Country 92.5 in Hartford (Waterbury), CT is WWYZ. They debuted in 1988 and the call letters date back to when they were an Easy Listening Station called "Wise 92".

Hot 93.7 in Hartford is WZMX. They debuted in March 2001. Those calls date back to when American Radio Systems signed on the station in 1991 as Hot AC formatted MIX 93.7 - prior to that the station was running NOAA Weather Radio as the station was up for sale after several unsuccessful years as Latino formatted WLVH.

According to AllAccess, the TOH ID on 94.7 had returned to WPLJ & WFME by 6 AM. At midnight this morning the ID mentioned WPLJ and WRXP.
Also, WDVY 106.3, the station simulcasting Kicks 105.5, has been off the air for about an hour. Perhaps Family Radio is making technical changes to prepare for their programming to be aired. Kicks 105.5 is still calling itself "The New Kicks 105.5 & 106.3."

FCC still lists the station as WFME. Perhaps they expected to be further along then they are.

Yes. I heard 106.3 off as well. I called Kicks, and the morning guy said that the change to Family Radio was happening some time today. I told him it was static, and he seemed surprised that it was happening already.

I agree that 94.7 sounds screwy this morning (compared to this weekend and compared to the old WFME) -- they must be doing some work.

And then the "new ID" was used at 8am + 9am, so they slipped a "WFME" one in there by "mistake" or maybe the "WRXP" one is still "wrong" - to be determined.

Someone commented seeing RXP earlier in that thread and now that's disappeared. Odd.... Being PLJ is largely female dominated, seeing the outcry of country over other formats isn't surprising.

Not only female dominated...the brunt of their audience is NJ. Makes sense they'd want country out there. I wonder however if Cumulus would really do country given it'd take away from PLJ's core audience. Alt. rock would not.

Apparently there will be no format change today. I just heard Scott & Todd say they are taking people's opinions about the new format and that we will still have the opportunity to do so tomorrow. As we all know, this "survey" is just a gimmick.

Just came here to say the same thing. You can't help but chuckle at how hard they are trying to convey people really have a say in it, as if they haven't long since decided what they're doing with it.

10AM TOH: WPLJ and WRXP.

You never know...Scott and Todd also don't know what happens with 94.7. And it's strange for asking the listeners what format they will hear, but Cumulus really know already what they are going to do with this frequency and what format they will put on. So asking people is only for fun, not for real offcourse ;)

Nice gimmick by Scott and Todd. I suppose it's a good way to engage listeners with their Facebook page and to raise some awareness of 94.7, but there's no way that Cumulus will take any listener "opinions" into consideration. I'm betting that the format is already predetermined.

Does anyone doubt that when the change goes in, it will be because "the people have spoken"?

Have to say, though, the "what format?" riffing made me laugh out loud, especially the Black Sabbath Radio format.

I also agree with this. It's like saying hey, you like our product, what would it take to get you not to use it anymore? At the same time, it's there, people notice, might as well have fun with it I suppose.
