94.7 Updates

Remember they own 94.7 in Springfield Mass and could be tweaking the power of 94.7 in NJ to be stronger and weakening 94.7 Mass to be weaker so that they can justify bring PLJ over to 94.7 and then running WABC AM on 95.5 FM also for now. Talk is going to FM for the audience. They asking what to run on 94.7 and there answer will be PLJ. Think about it.

I've thought about this for all of two seconds: There is no accuracy to this whatsoever. Legally, a licensee cannot adjust power levels without fcc authorization, and such authorization would not be granted in the scenario you've laid out.

This isn't even speculation. It is misinformation, however well-intentioned, and must be corrected before other RadioDiscussion members start jumping on that bandwagon.

With this exception, for now I'm bowing out of this thread which has unfortunately devolved into a myriad of fact-bereft personal opinions. Cumulus knows what they are and will be doing with WRXP Newark, they are probably making final adjustments to whatever the ultimate content will be, and they do not care what Scott & Todd's audience or anyone else wants to hear.

Totally agree, well done.

Not sure how much it will matter, but it's pretty much a close battle between Alternative and Country on the Scott & Todd page, with only a handful of votes for other formats like 50's/60's Oldies, Smooth Jazz, and Standards. I'm surprised the Dance music crowd hasn't shown up there.

I'll support anything different on 94.7, but based on my personal tastes along with the promising ratings of New Rock 101.9, Alternative gets my vote. I also would love 50's/60's oldies, but I know that's not going to happen.

Mike Rock is onto it...lol. They would need to use the more suburban stations for what the suburbs listen to. Country and Alternative.

Or better yet...alternative country! The format only I would listen to ;D

Just in time for the Drive By Truckers / Old 97s shows coming to the Wellmont and Capitol Theater in March

Ha! That's pretty funny!

The only problem is it's the only format that would get lower ratings that either Alternative OR Country. It's a case where one plus one equals a .2 rating.

all polka and be done with it :) lol. seriously though, all the excitement in this is really hard for us radio geeks, but truth be told cumulus has a plan, and whatever they do hopefully it will make NYC radio better for it's listeners.

94.7 ROCK FM

Given the ongoing chatter about what should program the 94.7 frequency, enough with the discussion with country. It's not going to happen, like ever. Ever? Ever! On less the station decides AFTER trying out the format they want to try out doesn't work which is going to be unlikely and I will discuss why, then country is a huge opportunity.

The station is under the call letters WRXP and as a result, it will program rock music given the rock call letters.

In my opinion, 94.7 ROCK-FM, Playing everything that rocks or New York's Greatest Rock Hits, would play a collection of the greatest rock songs of all time. What does this include? Well, rock is a huge genre and because it is, it's gotta be clear, what kind of rock? Glam rock? Hard rock? Punk rock? Classic rock? Alternative rock? New Rock? Pop rock? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. The greatest rock songs from the 1960s (w/some Elvis on a rare occasion) to today. A station where you can find The Rolling Stones, Sum 41, Kid Rock, and Mumford & sons all on one station. The station appeals to all fans of rock. The station doesn't play watered down album-oriented rock or AOR because it's not popular, it's the rock people know and can embrace.

94.7 ROCK FM is a station appealing to the old and new in the world of rock. You'll hear modern rock hits such as "I Will Wait" and "Ho Hey." Let the station connect you with friends and families. Let this be your go-to station. A station always rockin' (literally).

What do you think of 94.7 ROCK FM?

Unfortunately the last time a NY FM station was assigned the call letters WRXP, the alternative format only lasted long enough for the station to be sold and converted to sports talk.

Don't be surprised if the cursed call letters repeat the pattern this time.

Cumulus had to dump the WFME call letters so Family could put them on that Westchester station and begin its "new beginning."

So, possibly Cumulus is going to a Rock or Alternative format with the RXP call letters, but then again, history may repeat itself and they may just be placeholders for a planned format that just isn't ready to roll out yet. And it is in Cumulus' interest to keep everybody guessing.

If you needed some temporary call letters in NYC, that might generate some buzz among those of a certain demo, which other available call letters have such a recent history ?

None of us on this board know for sure what's really coming. Alternative, or Country is fine with me, but, at this point, I wouldn't count on anything specific. We may all be very surprised at what happens next on 94.7.

I had a hunch that RXP stood for that, way before I learned of it on Wikipedia.

Actually, it stood for "New York's Rock Experience" - just like the slogan.

Re: 94.7 ROCK FM

Your format sounds too much like the original RXP, which was an absolute trainwreck. If they go rock, it should sound more like the most recent RXP, which Cumulus stations sound somewhat like, just with more 90s overplay.

I'll tell you this...

If anything, this heated argument over what should be on 94.7 is indicative of how desperate radio listeners are about the state of radio in New York City. With so many similar formats occupying the commercial dial, complicated by the fact that at least two (three if you count 105.9) of those commercial stations are controlled by non-commercial operators, it's no wonder that the reaction to the opening of 94.7 is akin to a pack of hungry dogs fighting over a piece of sirloin tossed out from the restaurant.

Yes, I would like to know what, ultimately, goes on the station but even I am starting to feel a bit concerned. In a way, it shows that radio still matters to people. OTOH, it's also proof that there can't be enough stations for everyone's tastes in New York City.

Could NYC use this to argue for an expansion of the FM dial?

Re: 94.7 ROCK FM

The call letters mean NOTHING. They're temporary or they simply don't matter. 94.7 had to have something since "WFME" was being re-assigned elsewhere and "WRXP" was available. Heck... the station could end up being country or something totally different than rock and it could STILL be "WRXP". The FCC doesn't assign formats to call letters people. Consultants do.

Not only will there not be enough stations for everyone's taste, but we are also debating which format is likely for a well known corporation that does formats by certain formulas. No matter which one they pick, within 24 hours if that, we will see the following patterns (and we saw it with RXP through every version of the format, which I personally enjoyed at times.)

A: 94.7 goes Alternative.

the complaints will then follow that:

1. they play too much active rock.
2. they don't play enough active rock.
3. they play band X Y Z and that band is not "alternative"
4. they play too much grunge.
5. they don't play enough vintage modern rock (pick new wave, grunge, etc.)
6. they don't play album cuts, local bands, bands that were huge at CBGBs, "screamers of the week" from LIR/DRE, etc etc.
7. they don't have jocks.
8. they have jocks and said jocks get in the way of the music.

Edit the above complaints for country and add:

1. they're too twangy
2. they're too pop and not "really country."

Meanwhile, at the less travelled segment of the dial (below 92.1 FM) - there are numerous stations offering innovative programming.

WFUV offers one of the most acclaimed AAA formats in the nation. Their HD and internet channel offers modern rock and indie music programmed by actual New York airstaff who go to shows and stay informed on music.

The Alternate Side from WFUV is also presented at times on WNYE 91.5 along with the excellent NPR AAA program "World Cafe" and other diverse music shows.

WFMU is one of the few true freeform stations in the US and is all over the map, but never boring.

WNYU offers one of the longest running "new music" programs in broadcast history, the "New Afternoon Show"

Outside of NYC, you can enjoy AAA on 90.5 the Night, which also offers a pure modern rock format called "Altrok" online and on HD which is programmed by a gentleman with great knowledge of the area's modern rock history and formerly involved with the great WHTG.

There's also WXPK The Peak in Westchester which offers a solid AAA format at 107.1.

I'm sympathetic to people who want modern rock, AAA, dance, country and any number of other format options in NYC.

But there are options that should be explored before expecting Cumulus to launch the format of your choice, and then let you down with a version of it that pales in comparison to what innovative, independent operators are doing in your backyard on air, and online.
