Don't be too sure that Cumulus will keep the WRXP call letters once its new format kicks in. Family Radio wanted to move those, well known to its listeners, WFME call letters when it took over its new station in Westchester, and Cumulus, obviously, wasn't ready to launch its new format, so it grabbed temporary call letters that were available, and familiar to its ultimate target demo in order to generate some buzz.
It is also generating some buzz by using WPJL audio that mentions the situation, instead of stunting with something unrelated on 94.7. The idea is to get people talking and speculating, and it certainly has worked on this board.
If it is to be the NASH format, it is part of a national strategy to sell a country music format to national advertisers, probably in the same way national talk shows are sold. 94.7 will be the top market outlet, and the decision as to format will have less to do with how well 94.7 would do as a free standing Country Music station, and more to do with how having an affiliate in Market-One will help sell national ads on all the other Country stations Cumulus owns that will carry the format. It's more about boosting the big corporation bottom line, than maximizing audience ratings or ad sales for the individual NY station.
So, the RXP thing could be just an attention grabbing gimmick, and those calls will disappear when the whole national NASH format is ready to roll out. This delay is not about getting the former WFME ready for the new format, its about getting a new national format ready to roll out across the country in one big splash, including on 94.7 Newark/New York City where it is hoped that Madison Avenue will tune in and be impressed.
