94.7 Updates

I agree with it being cruel that they chose to use WRXP as the call letters. We still don't know though, maybe the calls will match the format. I suppose you wouldn't want to make country your format but use the WYNY or WHN calls, it would be a huge hint and secondly I don't think they wish to pay heed to those previous stations. So you go with WRXP. Or do you plant the idea of a country station and in the end go with Alternative? It has been interesting none the less, but I am sure we will have our answer very soon.

How do we know it's going to be country for sure? How do we know it won't be sports, alternative, dance, or anything else?

Because they are moving their domains around and just took it off the parked DNS page to point to a page where other stations of theirs are hosted by proxy and CMS.

Don't be too sure that Cumulus will keep the WRXP call letters once its new format kicks in. Family Radio wanted to move those, well known to its listeners, WFME call letters when it took over its new station in Westchester, and Cumulus, obviously, wasn't ready to launch its new format, so it grabbed temporary call letters that were available, and familiar to its ultimate target demo in order to generate some buzz.

It is also generating some buzz by using WPJL audio that mentions the situation, instead of stunting with something unrelated on 94.7. The idea is to get people talking and speculating, and it certainly has worked on this board.

If it is to be the NASH format, it is part of a national strategy to sell a country music format to national advertisers, probably in the same way national talk shows are sold. 94.7 will be the top market outlet, and the decision as to format will have less to do with how well 94.7 would do as a free standing Country Music station, and more to do with how having an affiliate in Market-One will help sell national ads on all the other Country stations Cumulus owns that will carry the format. It's more about boosting the big corporation bottom line, than maximizing audience ratings or ad sales for the individual NY station.

So, the RXP thing could be just an attention grabbing gimmick, and those calls will disappear when the whole national NASH format is ready to roll out. This delay is not about getting the former WFME ready for the new format, its about getting a new national format ready to roll out across the country in one big splash, including on 94.7 Newark/New York City where it is hoped that Madison Avenue will tune in and be impressed.

WPLJ's ratings will not plummet. This just means that WPLJ can possibly pull away from tunes by say Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift and move towards something else. Perhaps they go more Pop'ish, or maybe they go more "Modern Rock'ish". I think at minimum Cumulus saw how devoted people are to the Modern Rock format in NYC, and maybe they could add more of that to fill the void. We don't know what the intent was with milking this for all it was worth via WPLJ/Facebook and Twitter. I'd say it gave them some very good insight.

It hasn't even happened yet and I am disgusted already... sort of reminds me of election day a little.... ughhhhhhhh

Not to mention all of the time I spent listening to PLJ all week, which is a miserable station... If I have to listen to "This Girl is on fire" one more time in my life again, I think I'll puke!

Most of the buzz that is generated on this board is just for the geeks. I live in Cleveland so how can that possibly help bring a new audience to 94.7? If they go Country then I'm just glad that they punked out the Alternative fans with the call letters instead of other genres that could fill a void on radio in NYC.

Why would you be glad about that? Kind of harsh. Alt Rock fans have been beaten up enough around here.

You can be very sure they WON'T be.

If it isn't Alternative don't lose hope. If it is indeed Country those listeners can tell you how they help out hope that a station for them would oneday come back. There is a time for everything and maybe it isn't the time for WRXP to return, yet.

I'm just "busting their chops" like they bust ours whenever we have hopes of Dance getting back on NYC airwaves. It's Friday...time to unwind and have some fun. I would be equally glad if Alternative came back on 94.7 (I do listen to some modern rock).

As I said, it could go either way between Alternative and Country, but I can't see anything else. Sports seems out of the question since CBS will reportedly be phasing the network in on 660, plus they seem to be testing the waters for a music station on 94.7. As for Dance, there hasn't really been a lot of talk about it on 94.7 (even among the usual crowd), and it's just not something I can see Cumulus doing.

If 94.7 goes country just watch PLJ's ratings will plummet.

They will lose some listeners (or possibly share them), but they will hardly plummet. If WPLJ had that many country fans, they may as well have been country all along!

WPLJ may lose more than any other station (I don't know that that's true, BTW), but a Country 94.7 would skim a little from many other stations as well.

And while I hope it's country, teasing the alternative music listeners with the WRXP calls only to go in another direction is just cruel.

All polka. You're welcome.

Another small clue is that Cumulus chose to simulcast music-formatted WPLJ, not talk-formatted WABC, while tuning up the 94.7 audio chain. So whether it's rock, country or polka, count on hearing music - not sports - when the flip is done.

Random stuff from old times are running, New York City Wheel of Formats.
