98.7 Simon--- the Triad's version of Jack-FM?

I heard a clip of WCBS-FM's recent relaunch in New York that also featured the last hour of Jack-FM, and I couldn't help noticing that the Jack-FM voiceover sounds similar to that on Greensboro's 98.7 Simon. Simon's format sounds similar as well, except their slogan, instead of Jack-FM's "We play what we want," is simply "We play everything."
Any thoughts on this?

A Jack by any other name.....you got it. This way they don't have to pay for the Jack name, owned by a bunch of ....Canadians!!

Wait a minute!! Are you guys saying that simon is a jack format station?? Are you two with the CIA??? How did you crack the case? Either way, it's a temporary place holder format.

For a place holder they have pretty darn good numbers, at least outside morning drive.

Plus, when WCBS-FM in New York flipped to Jack two years ago, Mayor Bloomberg dropped a HUGE F-bomb about it--- and, of course, the station picked it up and poked fun at him over it. I haven't heard anything about the mayor of Greensboro dropping any F-bombs about Simon...

My wife likes listening to it, apparently a lot. Seems like every time I get in her car it's on 98.7. And we're in Apex.

When is Entercom gonna flip 98.7.. ??The writing is already on the wall!!Seems like to me the pie has been split enough in the Triad.. Should have learned from he Triangle!

I don't know if or when that would happen, but I can just picture how they would end the format: In New York when Jack-FM was banished to HD-2 and WCBS-FM returned from its 2-year exile, they played a "Sopranos finale" remix of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and went dead abruptly at the same point in the song that the last episode of The Sopranos ended. Then, after a few seconds of dead air, followed by static, they faded in to the end of Frank Sinatra's "Summer Wind"--- the last song played before the flip to Jack--- before going into a roughly 17- or 18-min. timeline stunt covering the time frame their playlist now comes from (1964-1985) to usher in the station's reincarnation.
I don't know what they would change Simon into, but it would be interesting if the format cut out abruptly, then resurfaced on 98.7 HD-2...

question:

did anyone capture the flip?

98.7 hasn't flipped, as far as I know; the only station I know of that is about to flip is WCMC 99.9 sometime next month. BUt if and when 98.7 does flip, I'd like a recording also, as well as that of the 99.9 flip when it happens.

my bad. i mean't Jack Fm in NYC.

Many of the old links are now outdated, but while they were available I saved a copy. Here's the link:

www.sendspace.com/file/bsau93

This clip is roughly an hour and 15 minutes long (12pm-1:15pm), and is unedited, commercials and all. It includes the last 44 minutes of Jack-FM, the stunt, the relaunch at 1:01pm, and the first couple songs played on the new WCBS-FM, followed by DJ intros and an on-air reading of Mayor Bloomberg's proclamation celebrating the station's return.

Enjoy!

Here we go again...

It seems that Entercom has launched yet another Jack-like station: 106.3 WGVC in Greenville, SC, which just last November had flipped to a female-oriented talk station, has now become "106.3 Charlie-FM"; its slogan, "We Play Everything," is exactly the same as 98.7 Simon's in G-boro. I don't know if they used that robotic countdown for stunting like they did on WGVC between "The Walk" and the female talk format, and on WMQX/WPAW between "Oldies 93" and "93.1 The Wolf;" but, from what I heard, the company backing the female-talk format folded about a week ago, and the new "Charlie" format launched earlier this week after I don't know what kind of stunting.

Entercom has had pretty good success with the Jack Type format ... did you see the Adult Hits: Jack, Bob etc article on All Access a week or so ago .... Entercom had a number of Jack Type Stations make the listing of success stories .... so it was probably a fairly easy move to make.

I'm impressed with the way Entercom has handled the format. They seem to be the only ones to have nailed it, which is really a welcome change in the Triad considering the constant format changes that were occurring on 98.7 before they launched Simon.

The PD at Simon is Sean Sellers ... he is a great PD on many levels .... excellent on-air programming and the ability to work with the sales side of the building .... the best PD I've worked with since Jeff Cushman ..... Brian Douglas is the PD at 102 Jamz ... he also oversees all the Greensboro Entercom stations as well as some regional responsibilities. Brian is exceptional.
