98.9 being shopped around

then again...maybe it will!

Salem has a better shot with CCM on 98.9 WJKR than they did when they briefly owned 103.1 back in the 90s.. of course if Salem does CCM here it needs to be very local.. They can't just plug in "Today's Christian Music" off the bird with "Fish liners" if they want to take a kick at WCVO which is out in the community and has some local "live" content.

If CCM is their plans (no one really knows yet] as they are being very quiet beyond "we'll be programming starting 11/1" I would go with a launch of Christmas music -- then launch the CCM format on 12/26/12.. [or they could stunt with Christmas until Black Friday when WCVO flips to Christmas and do the opposite and launch their CCM format with Christmas music sprinkled in instead] ...

I still won't be shocked if they go with talk since Salem does not have a place in this market for their syndicated talk. [and they can plug and play on the cheap with such format].

98.9 will not work with CCM... it won't work with conservative talk either imo.

then again...maybe it will!

From this morning's Columbus Dispatch....

Maryland-based Radio One has agreed to sell Columbus radio station WJKR (98.9 FM) to Salem Communications, pending regulatory approval.

The price was not disclosed. As part of the sale, Salem will begin providing programming for the station on Nov. 1.

WJKR, “The Jack,” is one of three stations Radio One owns in Columbus and the only one to air a non-urban format.

The company currently owns or operates 55 stations, including local stations WCKX (107.5 FM), which plays R&B and hip-hop, and WXMG (106.3 FM), which plays R&B and oldies.

Salem Communications has headquarters in California and owns or operates about 100 stations that play Christian and conservative-opinion content, including WRFD (880 AM).

This is now posted under the official Jack FM website. It's entitled:

R.I.P. 98.9 Jack-FM

When Salem bought into Nashville recently, they did a signal swap. I wonder if we could see the same thing happen here? Wouldn't it be funny if they ended up on 102.5 via a signal swap?

102.5 would cover the "burbs" better for Salem.. and 98.9 with its Dispatch tower signal would cover the Short North / etc.. for CD102.5.

HOWEVER -

The issue at hand is CD102.5 does NOT own their frequency they are still LMA'ing it from "SOUTHEASTERN OHIO BROADCASTING SYSTEM" so would SE want to actually swap signals with Salem... After all they want to "eventually" SELL their rim shot signal... why would they purchase another Columbus signal.

I imagine that they will go music since they have a good network developed now that they did not have when they were trying to do the format on 103.1.

I do think they will put the squeeze on 104.9 but don't be fooled, the river has money.

I do wonder if Salem is done...somehow, I do not think so. I think we will see them pick up another property in the market...a market that already has way too many Christian outlets...it is ridiculous because they all sound pretty much the same...and that isn't a compliment.

so, her they come...brace yourself!

What else could Salem acquire? Could they make another play for 102.5?

It's not uncommon for them to have "3 or so signals" in markets they are in... For instance in Los Angeles they own KKLA FM which runs a format like WRFD-AM does now.. A Fish station (KFSH) then they have two AM's that run their "conserve talk" ..

Could they make a run for AM 1580 WVKO after election season? They could easily park conserve talk there..

I would love to see Salem bring"The Fish"in Columbus. They would go head to head with"The River"indeed.Keep the talk shows on the AM dial.I was disappointed to see Salem make the buy.Emmis should of snatched it up.

I wonder if they'll do any kind of poking fun on the air?

Yep.  Just heard Low-Paid Lee doing the Jactivities Update, and a creaky door opens and a grim reaper voice keeps interrupting him with, "Low-Paid Lee, the end is near!  The end is near!"  LPL says something like, "it must be a Halloween stunt, get him out of here," but the voice keeps interrupting.

This is an example of why it's sad to see Jack-FM go.  Too bad it was never given a better signal.  Yes, it would be nice if CC would take the upgraded 106.7 Adult Hits and have an Adult Hits + Oldies combo like the one that does so well in Cleveland.  But for various reasons I don't see that in the cards.  And yes, it would have been far better had Emmis snatched up 98.9.  Heck, almost any group or local operator would have been better than Salem or EMF, but Emmis, Entercom or Greater Media would have been best.

Wouldn't be surprised if Salem has some of the shows from WRFD-AM on the new 98.9. The ones in the late evening and night because WRFD-AM
is a daytime only only.

Salem Please keep 98.9 JACK-FM.

These posts seem to be 'disappearing' ... the ones I saw posted over there a few days ago seem gone.

Just what we need another talk station. If Radio One sold this station it must mean it won't be long before they decide to get out of Columbus all together. I would have sold 106.3 first and kept the intown 98.9/ 107.5 frequencies if I was radio one.

Just heard Low-Paid Lee say doomsday is just a few days ahead for Jack FM. He is inviting listeners
to call into the station to air recordings for the last day of Jack FM. He said he needs a license, a transmitter and a better record player. In the meantime, he is applying or unemployment.

Hopefully the testimonials + Lee's bargain-basement pay will encourage NABCO to take him and more importantly the format -- and maybe even the call letters -- and put them on the upgraded WTDA.  And NOT take the satellite-fed version, which is far inferior to what WJKR presented.  All wishful thinking, of course, and that last part is a real killer anyway as NABCO will probably continue to want to continue with bird-fed formats on WTDA regardless of format.
