98.9 being shopped around

We all knew conservative talk was coming but damn this still sucks. It's just another waste of a signal in a miserable market. Boo!

I had tried 989thetruth, 989thepatriot and all other presumptuous garbage names, but never even thought of the answer.

Should have been the FIRST one. They changed the Apple in NYC to The Answer months ago...

Glad to hear some local interaction with Low Paid Lee and asking listeners to call in. Any idea if they take over at 12a on Thursday or a different time? Oh, and I would love for WTDA to flip, but very doubtful with the election the way it is.

I never had thought to try "The Answer"... I tried the Word, The Fish, FM Talk (with various combos)... Salem has been pretty mum about this change [ My guess is they didn't want a big hoopla over the last time they attempted to change formats of a station].

[Woulda liked to seen a Fish] -- Much as we have The River -- The Fish CCM is a "different mix" than what WCVO does.

CVO's programmed by a consultant and their playlist is way to narrow for my tastes (though I know for CCM it works in a lot of areas and they have seen some of the best #s they have had in awhile with their current mix).

After listening to Jack in the car today, I really hope someone picks up the format. Why not one of the translators in town try it? 94.1, 104.3? OR... what about a signal that reaches into the city? 101.7, 100.3?

I too would like to see someone pick up"Jack Fm", prefer 99.7 but wouldn't a 2.1 rating look good on 103.9? I doubt if they could get low paid Lee to move, his voice sounds like Warren Stevens of 106.3. Too bad they don't take requests, last 3 songs, Hell Is for Children (Pat Benatar), Raise a Little Hell (Trooper), & Highway to Hell (Ac/Dc).

I don't have anything against bible thumpers as long as long as they don't try to push that crap on me but having our commercial signals raided when just about every single non-com is doing some kind of religious format is just ridiculous. Here's some Irony: Thank God for SiriusXM!

Hey Matt...most radio station's have consultants who....CONSULT. I can assure you that we use every tool, but we're "programmed" from our team in Columbus. BTW, you're right...you're not in the target demo.

It looks like the Columbus Radio One cluster will be sold in the near future.

"After nearly 14 years as OM at RADIO ONE/COLUMBUS, J.D. KUNES and the company part ways as his post has been eliminated."

Radio One has sadly been having financial issues in recent years with the economy.... They have taken it harder than most from my understanding (as we know they exited Dayton by selling to Main Line).

The fact they sold WJKR which is a better signal than 106.3 .. It would make sense that they will sell the rest at some point when the time is right... If I was going to stay in this market I would have sold 106.3 (the weaker signal) over 98.9...

Hope Kunes stays in CBus. He did a fantastic job with Jack in the last five months. Too bad he didn't have a better signal to work with, or a company that was actually interested in staying here.

Hey Bro.. I just wanted to apologize if my comments ruffled any feathers.. I wasn't trying to say WCVO wasn't locally controlled.. I am well aware who you use as your consultant and I know he's a good guy who has seen success with another major market station... Kudos to what you all have done with WCVO over the years... your numbers show.

I guess I was just trying to say competition can be good -- keeps everyone on their toes naturally we know now that 98.9 won't be a big threat to what you all do (since they will be talking).

and Yes .. I am not in your demo :) [though you are #2 on my presets in the car]

I believe they have flat out said that Columbus is not a core market for them, even well over a year ago. That's why I had hoped 98.9's shift to a very non-R1-like format was -- as strongly rumored -- an indication that the station had been sold to someone who would really invest in the format. Maybe such a sale was indeed in the offing, but fell through. Any owner would have been (and still "will be") facing a challenge trying to get traction with a non-Urban format on that signal, but an Emmis or a Saga or an Entercom probably could have made Jack a more-viable competitor than cash-strapped urban specialist R1 ever could (despite some excellent programing).

It makes sense they sold 98.9 first because it's in more demand then 106.3 (the weaker signal). Buyers probally have a lot less interest in the 106.3 signal then the 98.9 signal. Radio-One wents to sell their Columbus station(s) in the near future and 98.9 was of more of interest to Salem then 106.3. For all we know, Salem had no interest in 106.3.

What Columbus Cluster, if any, will be interested in picking up 107.5?

There is nothing in this article to suggest that the remaining Cluster is For Sale, In addition it makes sense that while R1 is an urban format company they would keep the two formats that generate the most cash for the company. moving magic to 106.3 in hindsight seems to not be such a bad idea as they have held onto most of the ratings they had before the move, just released they have a 5.3 for the month. And why sell 98.9? well I'm sure they got a lot more money for it that 106.3 would ever get. and there was no way they could move 107.5 which should by far be the higher billing station in the cluster.

The way these things normally work, the next PPM monthly will probably show Jack-FM with its highest numbers to-date.

SURE ENOUGH:  In the PPMs released today, on its last day of existence, Jack jumped from 1.9 to 2.6, easily its best 6+ share ever.  So any other company but Salem might have stuck with it.  Damn!

It really is sad and does show how sick of the status quo this city is.
