98Q Morning show

How does this show continue to stay on the air? I'll grant you, I don't find too many local morning shows in Ct. tolerable but this one has to be the worst. I scan most mornings, but when I hit 98Q, like a 20 car pile up on I-84 , I can't turn away. It's freaking horrible. Rachel Foxx has no business doing mornings. She was barely listenable during middays. Not everybody is cut out for mornings, and she DEFINITELY isn't. When she first came on board after Danielle Lane exited stage left, she sounded nervous and excited like you would expect. Its' been how long now? 6,7,8 months? Is it possible she's worse now? As pd, Bill Trotta has got to work with this girl. She mumbles, bumbles and stumples through every celebrity report she does. It's obvious she's just "ripping and reading". Can she at least read through it ahead of time so she can deliver it more smoothly? Like she's not just reading it for the first time. Also, she never seems to know where she wants to go with a particular story, or while she's engaged in conversation with Trotta. And she definitley doesn't know how to wrap a story or segment up. It's painful listening to her hem and haw while trying to come up with a witty outro. (which never come) TIME TO SHOW PREP PEOPLE. Combine that with the forced, blatantly fake laughter ( A Bill Trotta staple ) and there's no way she belongs in mornings. Trotta should pull himself off the air as well. He's too old for the format. I don't think he's relevant anymore. He too suffers from the fake, forced laughter and "fathers humor" . (The stuff you'd hear your dad say when he thinks he's being funny, but he's not). For those of you who are going to tell me to just change the station. You're absolutely right. And I do, but not until after I listen to this abortion of a morning show and ask "why is this on the air?". I know the station has got numbers, but it can't be on the strength of the morning show. Just to show that I'm not anti 98q, Scotty in the afternoon is a hell of a jock. Well prepared, good phoners, get's in and out quickly and concisely. He shoulg be moving on to a larger market very soon. And that's all I've got to say about that.

I agree 100%, It's a train wreck, something needs to be done, 98Q has always been in a battle with I95 and a morning show like that could sink there ratings. I also agree about Scotty in the afternoon, the kid is one of the better CHR jocks in CT right now,..a great sense of humour, tight breaks and big phones. I actually think he would be a great fit for afternoons at KISS.

I also agree. WRKI's morning show is excellent. However, 98Q targets a completely different demo (mainly soccer moms from the sound of things). I don't think most people who listen to Ethan & Neil would have even the slightest interest in 98Q's morning show, or any of their other programming for that matter.

Well I'm glad that i stay on your minds so much that you have to talk about me. If i'm so much of an abortion....then why did the morning show numbers spike with the demo? why did i get all the emails and calls from excited listeners that loved me being on in mornings? oh and if i don't belong in mornings, why is this my second morning show? "obviously fake laughter"? so sorry if my laugh sounds fake to you, but its' indeed real...you don't know me, so don't talk smack about me...find something better to do with your time

At least they're consistant! It's been bad as far as I remember! I worked with a guy who worked at 98Q and there was always something about "Mr. Ego" - if it wasn't the morning show there was something he had his mits into that didn't swing well with folks.

The sad thing is Irv doesn't or hasn't done anything to improve things.

Where, oh where, to begin....First, don't flatter yourself, it took a while before we made our way to you and 98q..There were all those important am's and DRC audio problems to chat about first..So the numbers spiked in your demo huh? Who's your competition again? Let's face it, the arbitron numbers are subjective at best. All depends where the books go, and if they get returned or not. So you're numbers spiked...ok, kudos to you.....Now as far as getting "all the email and calls from excited listeners", that comment brings to mind listeners who say,"all my friends say I'm funny" or "all my friends tell me I have a great voice so I should be on the radio"..How many friends do they actually have?.So you got some emails and calls..10? 20? a million?.. You were bound to get some just based on the change alone. As far as this being your second morning show, well I can only take a guess and say your other pd lost a bet and had to put you in mornings. In Trottas' case, you probably didnt' cost him too much and you were right there in house. And just because you're in mornings, doesn't mean you belong in mornings.(ex:David Lee Roth) And for the record, I'm not talking smack about you, I'm critiquing and giving my opinion of you and your "morning show". Same way I would critique and give my opinion of any movie I see in the theatre or show I see on tv. You say your laugh is real, ok..Then it's not fake, just annoying. This is a radio board where we talk about.......ummmmmmmmmmmm... RADIO!! And you are in radio..Look, I respect the fact you put yourself out there every morning, but for God sake, do some show prep, write your own stuff, do your homework and have some pride in what you're doing...

I have to agree with Jordan. I've listened to 98Q for a few years now and Rachel Foxx is nothing but a blabbering idiot on their morning show. She clutters the airwaves with "oh yeah"s, "i agree"s and "uh-huh"s; she's pretty much Mr Morning's hokey sidekick with no viable subject matter to cover herself. I can picture it now...she just sits there in the co-pilots chair in front of a computer and interjects some lame anecdotes that bring no feesible point to the segment.

And Rachel, I'm sure you'll come to read this at some point - DO SOME SHOW PREP AND STOP READING YOUR "HOLLYWOOD DIRT" DIRECTLY FROM THE COMPLETE SHEET! Half of your airtime is filled with blank pauses and "ummms" while you find your place on the People magazine website. At the very least put it into your own words!

I've been in radio for upwards of about 20 years now, and it pains me that 98Q relies on your lack of talent to carry half of their morning show. I guess it is cheaper in the long run to hire half-ass talent for a half-ass team.

I have no problem with ripping radio peeps. But damn, have some onions like Alan or Bill to use your real name or radio handle instead of hiding in anonymity. That is pathetic.

ok "Caveman" we all know your mother didnt give you that name. My name is James Eisan and I live in New Milford. I worked for 17+ years in Chigago radio before moving out here a few years ago. Any more questions?

I didn't ask a question. Mom didn't name me Caveman, Omelette did.

look...you guys wanna spew your opinions about the show and stuff fine...[EDIT]..and we all bust on other people at other stations because we all think we know more then the next guy..but personal attacks are another thing...keep it professional, not personal. things like "your laugh isn't fake, just annoying" or "your last PD lost a bet and had to put you in mornings" things like that are just wrong...i've seen too much [EDIT] the fan and legal issues arrise from ppl smashing other ppl on these boards and making it personal....for god's sake...keep it professional

[EDIT-profanity]

I never attacked you personally.. I never mentioned anything about physical appearance, your family or anything of the sort. I would never do that. I only offered my opinions about your on air work. Whether you want to admit it or not, anything and everything you do on air is open to scrutiny by the listener, even down to your "not fake" laugh. You may not believe me, but I do want to hear you get better. Like James said, it pains me to hear you struggle so mightily. Do you know how many recent CSB grads and college jocks would kill to be in your position? You're doing mornings just outside New York City, put some effort into it. I know it's tough to hear or read negative opinions about your performance, but they're just OPINIONS. They're not right, they're not wrong, they're just.....You certainly are showing quite the thin skin here. You shouldn't give a hoot about what I think or what anyone else on this board thinks. All that should matter is what your PD,owner and you think of you. Are you happy with your performance?

And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank "Caveman" for pointing out how pathetic it is not to post with real names..Hmmmmmmmmm, that does seem a bit hypocritical, or is it just me? I view these boards as my therapy. A chance to vent and get things off my chest. We're all familiar with doctor/patient confidentiality right?

If I may add my 2 cents, it's not fair to just single out just one female morning "sidekick". I do a lot of station scanning in the morning and its an epidemic. Has anyone bothered to check out the assault on the english lanquage known as Megan doll on WPLR? Not sure if its the sing song delivery or her total ineptness that frustrates me more. Heres a woman who actually screwed up the Neil Armstrong line "one step for man.....and so on. So let me understand this, she made this mistake because she was READING? you would've thought this line being 37 years old would be memorized. Not to overburden you meg. Having read this board in the past I have heard and agreed with peoples thought on Bumbling Beth Bradley over at DRC. She is nails on a chalkboard bad. I try to find something about her that I dont mind, umm...still thinking! And for the record her partner John Seville isn't much better. He sounds like a parody of a bad 70's AM dj. Before this gets to be a fully negative post, I will say that I think Corey Myers on 92.5 does a nice job. She doesn't play the dumb female sidekick part. You get the impression that she is an equal with the host.

What's hypocritical? I use my on-air name that I used at WRKI for 3 years & continue to use today. AND I'm not dissing anyone while hiding behind a monitor. Not tough to figure out my legal name. Would take all of 15 seconds.

Therapy? Ripping some chick sidekick makes you feel better about yourself?

for the record Jordan...i really DON'T care what you think..it is about what i think and my PD and company and all is well....but it's instinct to stand up and defend yourself when someone is speaking negativly about you. And I'm well aware of the fact that everything i say and do is open to scrutiny..i've been on air for alot longer then u think and rust me, i get it every day b/c i'm from Boston and am a Red Sox fan in YANKEE country and that's one of the topics we touch on alot....as for personal attacks...i do take things like my laugh and implying i'm only on the air b/c of a lost bet personally...my laugh is ME..so I take it personal.
like i said before..we all love to rip a jock...we all think we're better then the next guy...professional opinoins fine...

i also saw the irony of caveman's post about real names as well....lovely use of irony...
and mdiglia..thank you for pointing out i'm not the ONLY female cohost in the state of CT...the way these guys talk you'd think i was....

Wow, talk about a heated discussion and hot tempers! Let's just take a moment to put a few things in prospective:

Originally when I hit this board back in 2003 my user name was a nickname I got from a bunch of friends in the biz. When the board got upgraded my real name became listed so I don't know if it's completely fair to rip on a person for not having their real name in their posts.

It's nice to recognize others in the biz by seeing their real name or stage name but let's remember why we're all here. We're hear to share our views and opinions on topics related to radio (and TV on the TV boards). We've all ragged on things ranging from major mistakes in programming, air talent and signal/audio quality (or lack thereof) by corporate broadcasters all the way to missteps by on-air talent. When tempers get heated and others lose control of the English language that they have to resort to expressing themselves with profane language then there's a problem. Opinions are just that, opinions! Some should be taken as contructive criticism, some should just be ignored and some should be taken strictly as entertainment value.

Back to the thread at hand, I can't say I've heard the morning show in recent days, as my friend who worked at 98Q did so around the turn of the decade. I don't know how the morning co-host is on the air, but from what I've heard about "Mr. Morning" I'm surprised there's room in the studio for anybody else to sit or stand.

BTW: Compliments to mdiglia on your comments about DRC-FM's morning show - I think you've hit the nail on the head with that one!

Bill...if in your mention of profanity on posts, i would just like to clarify where one of my posts was edited for profanity....it was really nothing..profanity free.i said that opinions are like "bumholes"...we all got 'em...and the other edit was about seeing the "poop" hit the fan...but i used carrots in place of two of the letters...and i couldnt modify it after the "edits" were put in....so..it wasn't like i was resorting to using profanity...know what i mean?

Foxx,

You are making yourself look awful by lowering yourself to respond to what people say about you on a message board. If you didn't care what people thought, you wouldn't bother responding to it. What you are doing is what I said before "bush league" you wanna be the radio professional... show everyone on this board just how professional you are and walk away.

You get a nice check every week or every two weeks I imagine. You said the ratings are good... what do you care what these people think? Let it go chick.

Where is the irony? I said, to "have the onions to post with your real name or on-air name". That was my on-air name at WRKI when I was on-air for 3 years and it is my on-air name in Savannah now. Hell, there is a link to my site on my postings, it's not like I'm hiding....since you post under Foxx is that "irony"? Give me a break.
