I am not seeing the total death of radio, particularly AM just yet. These predictions remind me of what was predicted for what we now call old time radio programs back in 1948 or so and it took several more years after that to kill that off. I’m convinced that there is still life left for Amplitude Modulation between 540 and 1700 kHz

A Change Coming to KGO

Well, given that the band isn't going dark this week, yeah. But how long and what kind of life?
I don’t get why they had him go on the air for 15 minutes. They could have easily started the betting promo stuff at 10 AM instead of having him go on the air for only 15 minutes and not let him acknowledge anything was happening
If one of the progenitors of talk radio couldn’t survive, what makes the format viable long-term in any way?
Yup! The last time I listened to AM was on a cross-country drive and only then when there wasn't a listenable FM signal within range. That last trip was 5-6 years ago. I cannot listen to AM in my metro area even if I wanted to because of all the floor noise.
Some adapted to changes, others stuck with an outdated format.
Look at WLW or WHO or KOA of KFI. Or WSB and WBT. Some knew what to do, others failed.
Last time I did, other than a band scan for DX, was last year, when I still lived in Connecticut. It was WTIC 1080, only because the Boston Red Sox don't have a Connecticut FM outlet. The New England Patriots are on WTIC, too, but I always listened to WAQY Springfield (102.1) for better sound quality.
Actually, if you listen to the beginning of the clip, it was a running recorded message that aired in it’s entirety at the beginning of the clip, followed by the bumper music, and the message was starting again when the transmitter cut out. The message had been airing on a loop all day from 10:00 A.M. till the transmitter was cut at 7:00 P.M. This video is kind of deceptive.
It's pretty much an infomercial for BetMGM. They provide the programming and they promote their online betting website on the program. Sports betting through a bookie is actually illegal in California, but how are they going to enforce bans against online betting? These stations are popping up all over the country and are going hand in hand with online sports betting sites.
Interesting conversation the day before yesterday at a gaming convention in Las Vegas with the two CEOs behind the California online betting proposition that's losing in the polls. They're saying if they lose this time, as appears likely, they'll be back in 2024. I've set the link up so it should go right to that conversation---it's only four or five minutes:
It's a partnership. The programming is being done together with Audacy. They're using a wide range of experts in this area. By the way, sports betting happens in a lot of offices without using a bookie. Just about everyone I know takes part in their office football pool. Every week, they all pick their winners, and the one who picks the most wins the pot. Some of these people involve their entire family in making their picks. Very common thing that is outside the range of Las Vegas and everything else.
Anyone interested in hearing more about the demise of KGO and the abrupt sign-off last week, Mark Thompson is joining Tim Conway Jr. tonight on KFI AM 640 and is already talking about KGO. He keeps saying how corporate was worried about Mark Thompson going rogue so that’s why they did the abrupt sign-off and told him not to say anything about what was happening. Very interesting!
Who owns the radio station? Mark Thompson or Cumulus?
If they were that worried they could have easily switched to their promos/teases for new format at 10 AM instead of having Mark go on for 15 minutes.
Mark Thompson was the last voice on the air so I think he has some insightful information about how everything went down. Especially considering there is a lot of speculation from people on here about how things went down.
Exactly, that‘s why it does not make a whole lot of sense of how Cumulus handled the switch. To go as far as having corporate people working the board in case somebody went “rogue” is kind of ridiculous.
Exactly. And the odds are the odds. It's useful information in a football pool, I'd imagine (again, not a gambler).

Tuning in right now! He wasn't on with Tim on Tuesday. Probably due to KFI's coverage of the LA city council scandal. BTW, Mark Thompson is too professional of a broadcaster to go rogue. I hope KFI can find room for him, maybe on the weekend.
I'm sure he does, but my question is who is responsible for what goes on the air?
