A day in the life of a lamptimer

Ah, forgive me for entertaining myself, but when I heard this bit of dialogue on last night's episode of "Batman," I knew something had to be done with it. For you and me this is an amusement. For 1440 this could be imaging.

Yo, C (as in C Say Pway-Dah, but not catfish without the capital C)

The Buckeye Boyz can't wait to hear your Lumberyard 14~Forty imaging. Only problem is our browser isn't playing it. We see the player, but it won't start (like a Gremlin on a cold morning). What to do? The Media Hut is equipped with Safari v5.0.3 on an iMac which runs a lot better than our last computer - a TRS80. Can you help out a bunch of confused Middle Eastern Men of the Media?

O Man of the Fez,

Try right-clicking on the link and saving the file to your computer. Then you should be able to play it
just like any other MP3 file.

cheers,

C.

ROFL - this is the greatest thread on Radio-Info! I just discovered it. You guys are a panic!

Nice to see a few pages back that asugeorge1 was able to dig out the Lumberyard here in Palm Springs. I will dust off the GE Superradio 3 and try for a QSL card myself!

Next trip to Phoenix (spring training, probably) I'm packin' a lunch, bringin' a camera and makin' a road trip to the "Yard."

A tip of the fez, C-man. Had to put the link into i-tunes to play it, though. The Nurse and I ran your work through the Akbarizer 3000 and it measured it by the yard. Came out as a perfect sweeper for Lumberyard 14~Forty. We'll get a hold of Mrs Gumpdusky and see if she wants to buy it for the Goldminers...however you may have to include some Frank Sinatra music in it ;)

Welcome! It's always nice to have more fans of the Lumberyard! When you come out for spring training, you can help KAZG garner that 0.1 share in the books that they have been longing for all these years! ;D

Picking up the Lumberyard in the Palm Springs area was definitely a treat. What helped was the fact that, thanks to the lamptimer 11 second drift, KAZG was coming in a few minutes after local sunset. With a full 5000 watts of “pow-pow-power” and skywave working it’s magic as it always does this time of year, it was nice to hear the Lumberyard coming in around Whitewater. Of course, there was some spill-over interference from adjacent 1450 KGAM and a frequency battle with Funny 1440 from Riverside, CA. Once the lamptimer finally kicked in, though, it was all Funny 1440 all the time.

I bet if you try hard and point your GE SuperRadio toward Phoenix right around sunrise or sunset, you should be able to hear the faint sound of the Goldminer’s working hard at the Lumberyard! ;)

Yes indeedy...this is the greatest lamest thread on R-I. No trip to the Lumberyard is complete without first viewing KOOL Listener Lauren's excellent video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xhfbRxqyI&feature=player_embedded#! While there's no web site or streaming audio, just imagine worn-out oldies played in compressed mono on an Ancient Modulation daytimer*. As our idol Edd "Kookie" Byrnes would say...it's the ginchiest!

*currently unable to use nightime authorization due to issues only catfish (no capital C) understands

Over in the "DX and Reception" section of the RI Boards, 1440 AM is the frequency of the week. Naturally, no 1440 frequency discussion would be complete without a "tip of the Fez" to the beloved Lumberyard. ;D

Take a look at this:

In all my admiration for it, I just realized I've never posted in the World Famous Lamptimer Thread, thus, I only see it when I manage to check the Phoenix board.
Interesting threads. I've got some lamptimers that we use to light up the house when we travel. Maybe I should start a radio station.

Reminds me of a song by The Browns from back in the early 1960's, "The Old Lamp Timer", or was it "Lamplighter"? I'm old and I get confused.

Maybe we can get some extra lamptimers from this guy for Sandusky. Makes a great Christmas gift! :)

And here I am...to put this legendary thread about a legendary station on my new replies list.

:D

Unfortunately, I can't heard the Lumberyard out here in Ohio...a few thousand miles and piddly stations like WHKZ/Warren OH are in the way. (Well, not directly, but you get the idea.)

A Tip o' the Fez to my friend Clarke...now, can you sell that to Gumpdusky? ;)

Oh, I love this thread; been following it since it began!
Actually I've gotten some wonderful laughs over this thread...but I have to thank Lauren for that killer video....

Actually, 'the lamptimer' has a pretty nice facility! I'm an AM radio lover, and so this was great to see.

I really had an idea it was a falling over shack with a lone computer and a cb radio sized tx. Not so.

I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread...very entertaining, but also very informative as well.

That's a pretty good description of the Buckeye Media Hut!

Aside from the asbestos shingled roof, and rusted out transformer on the SRP power pole, the KDOT KAZG xmttr site is darn close to being in average condition. The Lumberyard and car repair shop only add to the beauty of this Scottsdale canal hugger.

Don't tell me...they string together car batteries as backup power!

You would not believe what song was just played for the first time over on the Lumberyard. Proves to me that whoever runs the music over at KAZG either has to be a contributor to this board or at least reads this thread.

Just a few days ago, OhioMediaWatch posted on the DX and Reception section of the RI Boards about the Lumberyard's use of a possible lamptimer and how it made him think of the 1960 song "The Old Lamp-Lighter" by The Browns, which rose to #20 on the US Country charts. I then copied that great post over here on this infamous thread this past Saturday. Jump to today and at 2:14 P.M., I was listening to the Goldmine and the third song into the "14 in a row" was the Brown's with "The Old Lamp-Lighter". Now either the computer-automated Miner 49er's struck gold with the biggest coincidence in the history of the Lumberyard, or someone purposefully put that song in the rotation. My vote is on the later because a similar thing happened last year when the Lumberyard played all those Edd Kookie Byrnes songs after we made such a big deal about it.

My question then is: who is the culprit? Is it catfish with a "c"? Curious minds would like to know! ???

The Lumberyard may not have an all-request line that we can call into, but I guess the RI Boards will have to suffice! ;D

If that's the case, then Nurse Jeff and I would like to hear "Keemosabe" by The Electric Indian. Just love the lyrics on that one..so much meaning!

In my best Larry Lujack (guesting with other jocks on the Tomorrow show) voice...

Hey Goldminers...do you have Whispering Bells by The Dell-Vikings? ;)

Such a coincidence is reason for pause and praise.
I would request a song but don't have the luxury of being able to listen here.
If wishing for a song here on RI really works, it's the most magical request line ever.

When I read the reference to the Browns version, I thought naturally of the Kay Kyser version, and they're not really much different in style or delivery, and I thought, they're not going to be playing "The Old Lamp Timer".

HEY! ---Kookie, Lend me your Comb just turned up on the home AM pt 15 goldmine as I type this!

Thanks for the mention, but I'm not the one who brought that up. I don't know the song, and couldn't Name That Tune in ANY notes. :D

The series of posts referring to The Browns song on the DX thread were started by "Icangelp":

A Google search reveals that it was called "The Old Lamplighter". Too bad...it would have been perfect to add into KAZG's rotation.
Play on words.

I was alive but young when the Brown's version of that song was popular in 1960. "Ah yes, I remember it well."

Over 30,000 views so far on A Day In The Life Of A Lamptimer. Nurse Jeff and I are waiting by the Media Hut programmers' hotline for that call from Gumpdusky to congratulate us. Wonder if they're going to take us out to dinner at the Londen Center Jack In The Box?
