A day in the life of a lamptimer

Yes and it was back on at 705PM until signoff...

7:05 PM? Sign off in February is supposed to be 6:15! Does "pre-construction
measurements" mean 52 watts?

And on a related note...I'm hearing KNUV a lot better tonight (+/- 9 PM) than
I should in the 'Tuke. Did the Big 1190 forget to drop to 400 watts at sunset?

Thank you catfish! I knew something was probably up. Can't wait for the new Nautel to come online!

You mean their mighty 250 watts ;) (at least according to radio-locator). I just went over to KNUV and noticed that they are in fact stronger than usual. Most of the time, they don't even come in at night out here in Gilbert. 250 watts from "T-town" with a major null doesn't really make it out to the Southeast Valley all that well. If you're hearing them in the "Tuke", then there's definitely something up as that null is more severe in your direction. I guess every other week now there's at least one station not powering down. A couple weeks ago it was KXXT, 1010 AM, now it's KNUV. The KFNN virus is spreading!

If only DFW had a station this interesting.

You've got KNIT (currently off the air) and its disappearing copper. Fortunately for us Zonies, Lumberyard 14~Forty has nothing of value to steal.. with the possible exception of proprietary intelligence. Not every group operator can do so little for so long as Gumpdusky has with the all day Goldmine*!

*not to be confused with the high school radio station using the same name in trade for tower space.

Tuned into the Lumberyard this evening around 5:45 P.M. to see if those golden oldies were playing after Radio Khushi, and all I heard was static.

Thursday afternoon the Radio Khushi dj's said their goodbyes around 5:45pm as Nurse Jeff and I anxiously awaited hearing wornout oldies until the drifting carrier dump at 6:15pm. No such luck, as Hindi Hits (without any talk, commercials or station ID, aired until the beloved Lumberyard 14~Forty called it a night. Guess the gold miner in charge of switching the audio feed wandered off and figured someone else would take care of it. All these snafus should resolve themselves once the new Nautel is installed and the lamptimer is retired. But the burning question we have is this: will there be any money left in the budget to paint the Tower of Pow-Pow-Power? To give you an idea of how thin and faded the paint is, the Earl Scheib paint job on our '76 Gremlin looks better ;D

I actually read about 70 pages or so of this thread last night, so today I got on the Phoenix reciever at globaltuners.com and am glad to hear the 14 in a row goldmine pumping out from Lumberyard 14-forty at the moment! Here comes the jingle!!! Into We Gotta Get Outta This Place. No Edd Byrnes yet.

Wow. finished the thread. Amazing!!

While streaming from globaltuners.com I heard at least 3 "surprises"

"There's A Moon Out Tonight" by the Capris
"Only In America" by Jay and the Americans
"Talk Talk" by the Music Machine

rarely played oldies. Not bad, Gumpdusky!!! Viva Lumberyard 14-forty!!!

Nurse Jeff and I can't recall when so much has been written about so little (okay, so there are a few topics by the Old Gringo and KDM7000 that come to mind). Too bad your Globaltuner.com can't take you to the Lumberyard for a view of the tower's faded paint; the 1950's style xmttr building complete with peeling paint on all wooden surfaces; the tremendous amount of junk surrounding the tower; and the lack of owned or leased real estate for a real ground system. But none of this will deter the Goldminers as the new Nautel is on it's way and we're counting the days to the lamptimer's retirement party. Who knows?...maybe Gumpdusky will fly Edd Byrnes in to host this kookie event!

I hadn't read each page, but most of them as this has gone on and all I can say is: Wow.

I actually fell in over here as a result of a link posted in one of my threads about a similar station with many odd quirks over here in Virginia. WKCW at 1420 AM. I guess its our "Lumberyard East" only not quite as predictable as the lamptimer. Lots of glitches, drop outs, forgotten power ups and downs, and hours of dead air with a whopping two commercials that ever air at any given time. Sometimes we get treated to the same song played three or four times in a row during morning drive time.

The studio is in an old house by the highway and has the fading paint on the towers too. Good entertainment, but not in a radio entertainment sorta sense. ;D

Nurse Jeff is busy working out the details of our latest scam business venture: Lumberyard (insert frequency here). For a miniscule licensing fee, AkJef Enterprises will sell you the right to use our alleged intellectual property for your Ancient Modulation station. Only one licensee allowed per market, with a minimum mileage separation of five miles please. Serious investors with at least twice what Keith DeGreen wants from those who attend his seminars should call Nurse Jeff at 1-800-Big Scam before your market is locked up!

Oooooh! A new format! I like that idea. Can't wait to see that one show up in the ratings. The minimum five mile separation should work out fine, especially for that killer 20W nighttime signal we have here pointing mostly North. When there is actually modulation, that is.

Oh, and no worries. I would never claim our little irregular station out here is anything near the quality of the original Lumberyard. ;D

It's nice to have a Lumberyard East out there in Warrenton, VA also playing those good ol' golden oldies. There are definitely some comparisons between the two stations. First, both stations play worn-out oldies with only 20khz of separation (WKCW is 1420 AM, KAZG is 1440 AM). Second, both appear to have problems with legal ID's, dead air and proper power dumps. WKCW is also similar to KAZG in that both stations don't offer live, on-line streaming. Also, up until last summer, KAZG didn't have a website. Apparently WKCW is behind as I can't currently find a website for WKCW. Time to get with the times WKCW! ;)

My question is this: Does WKCW's owner Metro "Light Rail" Radio, Inc. = "Gump"dusky? ;D

WKCW quit airing spots with their website a few months ago. Even when they actually had a page it didn't do anything or go anywhere. It pretty much did what they do on air except you could look at it rather than listen to it.

Oh and this morning from around 8AM to 10AM I heard the Beatles "Hello, Goodbye" three times, and both versions of "More than a Woman." They're on their game this morning. I especially look forward to Thursdays as I commute that morning and it takes me right by the chainlink surrounded studios and I get a good amount of listening time too. Now that you mention it, they haven't been ID'ing at the top of the hour for quite some time now. If not for the same two commercials and same songs, I might not be sure its them when they decide to drop to nighttime power.

I believe that there is a laptop and an iPod set on shuffle feeding the transmitter. Every once in a while the laptop needs rebooting, or the batteries in the iPod die.

Oh, one other thing I got a real laugh at last Thursday night: They didn't power down until around 1:30AM or so, during that time there was an endless loop of the two commercials for the religious retreat and the Friday night church night for the kids. I stopped listening at nearly 2AM and the loop was still repeating. Next morning the oldies were back online in the usual rotation.

Found the spectacular webpage for Metro Radio Inc: http://www.metroradioinc.com/wkcw1420am.html

They might be using Winamp which still has a nasty problem of crashing after several days on shuffle play.;D WKCW is just another of those wonderful brokered time AM's. We have too many in DFW. I bet it was a good local mom & pop station years ago.

They used to be a brokered time station, selling to the local Spanish community and some of the churches, and also were gospel for a while, but they flipped to oldies a little over a year ago and apparently walked out of the building leaving the laptop on the desk running. ;D Back in the 70's and early 80's they were actually "Big K Country" and when they had their studio up the road a couple miles (ironically in another old house) they had a tower with the calls on it and really big "K" in WKCW. Back then they had a few local DJ's and sounded pretty good.

U guys are seriously still talking about this? 15 pages on 1440?!

Three years later and now 112 pages of wasted bandwidth. Yup, we're still talkin' about Lumberyard 14~Forty  Good thing some things never change in Ara-Zonie as Nurse Jeff and I'd have to find a real job!
