A day in the life of a lamptimer

Ah, yes, good ol' Junk in the Box!

Newcomer here to the discussion of KAZG. Personally, I wish they would go back to playing more music and get rid of the talk shows, but that's just my opinion. When I'm at home, I seldom listen to the radio, but in the car, I listen to a wide variety of music while at the same time, trying to dodge commercials and the 1,846,287th playing of "Hotel California." My car radio buttons are set on KTAR-FM for news in the morning, "Real Country" 96.3, KDKB, KUPD (although I may get rid of that one--too many songs with "cookie-monster" vocals and guitarists who wouldn't know a riff if they tripped over one--one chord strummed endlessly while setting the distortion to MAX does not a riff make), KOOL-FM, KSLX, KRDE (who's bright idea was it to move KWSS to 93.9 and goof up KRDE's signal?), "Eva 95," and when I'm south of Camelback, KCDX. On AM, KOY, KAZG and a couple of sports stations. But now that Jim Rome is gone, I don't listen to KGME, and the only time I listen to KTAR-AM is if the D-backs are playing my beloved Dodgers and even then, I usually watch the game on TV). Anyway, I have to keep flipping through my selections, and when KAZG is doing blah-blah-blah, that limits my options by one station.

I appreciate what you are saying about the talk shows. However, the reality of this is the talk shows are what produce revenue for the station. There isn't much profit in playing oldies which we find entertaining. It's the commercial breaks and the talk shows that pay the bills.

Cheers,

Sparky

Have the longhairs taken over Lumberyard 14~Forty? Some of the recent adds make the Nurse and me long for the days of melodic, uncomplicated worn out oldies under 2 1/2 minutes in length. Case in point: Green Eyed Lady (album version) and Sweet Hitchhiker by CCR. And wassup with Up On Cripple Creek by The Band in power rotation? Talk about putting the load on listeners waiting to hear Edd Byrnes! Something doesn't smell right here...and there aint a Medical Hemp store anywhere close to Thomas and the Crosscut Canal  YIKES!

I heard "The Weight" by The Band on KAZG yesterday. I liked it, myself.

It's official: the Goldminers are swinging their picks in both directions! Saturday night Nurse Jeff and I heard Lola by The Kinks on Lumberyard 14~Forty. YIKES! However, things got back to semi-normal as within 10 minutes we heard Lonely Days & Mondays by The Carpenters. Hmmmm...guess Gumpdusky has borrowed a page out of the Twice 103.5 programming manual ;)

correctomundo, World's Most Interesting Man. Guess the thought (and mental image) of Lola was too much. Either that or it was Nurse Jeff playing 13 straight hours of Bobby Sherman CDs at the Media Hut

Or you've just come up with a mashup...Bee Gees "Lonely Days" and Carpenters "Rainy Days and Mondays".

"Lonely Days

and Mondays

Where Would I Be Without My Woman"

Forget Bang 545. My minions are all over the request line for The Tornados "Do You Come Here Often?"

Now the Goldminers can take a much needed potty break. Added to the eclectic list of wornout oldies is Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Just imagine how groovy Lumberyard 14~Forty sounds when segueing from CS&N to the Hollywood Argyles. YIKES! Nurse Jeff and I can almost hear the sound of busted glass and mangled metal all the way from South Scottsdale to the Buckeye Media Hut!

So the bathroom song is "Alley Poop" then?

Good one, Old Gringo (sfx-fake studio audience..clap, clap, clap, clap*)

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes will have to suffice as the official "takin' care of business" song until the Goldminers add the full length version of Hey Jude to their music pow-pow-power playlist. At the rate they're going, it won't be long (hmmm..that's already in rotation). Friday night Nurse Jeff and I heard Come Together by the Fab Four. And two songs later, it was Eleanor Rigby.

Those call letters really need to be changed to KAZ-Beatles. We'll call catfish (lower case c) on the Bossline Beatleline and see what he can do.

* a tip of the fez to the Nearly Bald One...but that's another thread altogether!

All of which reminds me of some point in those days of yore known as the mid-seventies when KRIZ was still a radio station and not a Gen-X way of spelling "Chris"...

... I was at a Billboard convention where a feature was the "hot seat" session in the main auditorium. A prominent industry figure would sit under a single spotlight on a stool* and take questions from the near-a-thousand folks there.

The guest the year I am thinking of was Dan Ingram. After some of the usual talent development questions, a young guy identified himself as being with a college station and asked, "Mr. Ingram... in your many years of experience and success, what would you say is the most important thing you have learned?"

Dan, with nary a pause, replied, "how to take a 3-minute s--t".

------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Not the kind of stool that the potty break might produce.

Last night I was listening to KAZG as I headed south along I-10. About 20 miles south of Phoenix it was still coming in though K-HAT on 1480 had completely faded out. Those 52 watts get out quite well. Actually I thought I'd lost them before I did as there was about a minute of dead air at the top of the hour.

Was that a minute of silence in honor of the lamptimer?

catfish (lower case c, por favor) has Lumberyard 14~Forty on steroids as those 52 watts behave more like 500 or 1000 watts at night. Case in point, Nurse Jeff and I were in East Mesa the other night (don't ask, 'cause we won't tell) and KAZG was more than listenable. In fact, when we punched up KOY 12~Thirty, there was all this garbage you'd expect on a garbage frequency. And they're running with 1kw through a monstrous tower. Perhaps one of these days Gumpdusky will wake up to what they have and start selling more blocks of time as all wornout oldies delivers is a 0.1 share. On good months!

Have they added "Summer Nights" from Grease yet?
Ontario OR Oldies AM has.
Heard it right out of (Can't Get No) Satisfaction last weekend.

Weird.

Does this get us closer to page 144?

Recall the glory daze of Ancient Modulation when stations routinely left off the final zero in their dial position? ...like 123 KRIZ and 55 KOY. Or rounded up/down to the nearest big number? ...like HitRadio 11 KRLA (actually 11~Ten). Imagine how cool the Goldminers' station would sound as 1~Forty Four KAZG?

Being closer to page 144 is a lot easier for our feeble minds to contemplate than page 1440!
