AM Only/Dial Global

I won't say I'm ranting about the format. I won't go into detail about exactly when I was listening this morning or why, though I plan to start another thread that includes that.

The first song I heard this morning, once the morning show was over, was by Tony Bennett. I think. I don't even remember which one. But that was followed by "Only Time" by Enya. That's the third time I've heard that weird new age garbage on this station. Gomez Addams used to do this with his model railroad.

Two songs later it was "From a Distance" by Bette Midler. And then "Suspicion" by Eddie Rabbitt. Too much AC! The second song I sort of like.

Things didn't improve much until the next hour.

After ABC News, Diana Krall's "The Look of Love". That was great, even if it was new. The musicians on these new recordings are so talented. I mention the vocalist only because that's how the song is identified, and she's good too, but you can always count on her to perform with good musicians.

After a "Senior Moment" feature, which included the day's Bingo number for shut-ins, the affiliate joined Nat King Cole's "A Blossom Fell" in progress. This happens sometimes. Part of the advice for seniors was to listen to soft or soothing music. I believe this station qualifies.

Yesterday I heard Ed Ames. I've been worried about him.

I'm more worried about whoever is around him when he's got a tomahawk.
???

Jerry Ford and golf balls.
Dick Cheney and shotguns.
Ed Ames and tomahawks.

I forgot one detail. After ABC News on the day I described in the above post, they played Bert Kaempfert's "Red Roses for a Blue Lady". I knew that a true standard was played.

The first thing I heard after the morning show was Nat King Cole's original "Unforgettable". NOT the one with Natalie. When was the last time Useless Classics did THAT? Connie Francis came next.

"Green Fields" by The Brothers Four got joined in progress after the Senior Moment, which had the results of a study of overweight, inactive people ages 60 to 89. This wouldn't happen if they didn't do the ewather during the break. I must have heard the weather five times.

The Paris Sisters were played today, so Jeff Rollins said they were Paris Hilton and ... what are their other names? Cleveland and Poughkeepsie? Anyway, Paris is the rich one.

The other day on the Senior Moment on the local station, they said don't take too many pills at once. If you forget one, don't take two. They also had tips on how to remember to take your pills.

Yawnnnnn!

ABBA backwards is Natures.

Anyone remember Serutan laxatives? Of course you do, if you're old enough to like this music.

"Easy" by The Commodores followed by "Friends and Lovers" after the news? Come on, you can do better. By the way, Jeff Rollins welcomed new listeners this morning and reminded them that this station does what a lot of others don't--"really good music".

About the local affiliate: they did Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" during the afternoon show. Huh????

And this morning's Senior Moment informed us copper bracelets don't work for arthritis, so don't waste your money. Medication may work. If not, try exercise.

Okay, that last post was about advertiser support.

This morning I heard Sinatra's "That Old Black Magic", which I don't think I ever heard on the radio.

I do know it reminds me of Gomer Pyle. Lou Ann used to sing it, and Gomer was the only one who couldn't get past her lack of talent. Gomer's friends just liked looking at her.

On a related note, Useless Classics used to play "Opus One". If you're a dedicated viewer of "Gomer Pyle" reruns, as I once was, you know this song. Someone who worked on that show must really have liked it. AM Only didn't tend to do that sort of thing.

It sounds to me like you need to find a better radio station to listen to. A Standards station that doesn't play that song is really missing something. "Old Black Magic" is about as "Standard" as it gets.

But that's referring to the station I do listen to.

Pointless Classics never played it when I was listening. They have their four token Sinatra songs they still play now, but I haven't heard any others.

Oh, wait, I was referring to Sinatra's version. I think Pointless Classics played one (at one time) where the singer did it really fast.

It is not very hard to come up with a couple of hundred Sinatra songs that are great. Playing only four songs is an insult. It shouldn't take an overly gifted consultant to figure out that there are several excellent Sinatra collections out there. They belong on just about any Standard's station. For instance, The "Reprise Collection," and the "Capitol Collection" are both excellent. You should find them at any decent record store. If not there is always Amazon.com. As long as either Billy May or Nelson Riddle had anything to do with the arrangements, it is hard to find a turkey.

If your local Standards station doesn’t play this stuff, you should be asking them “Why not?”

Actually, the Useless Classics affiliate did play "It Was A Very Good Year" the other day on the local morning show. And the satellite format did play "I've Got You Under My Skin", so maybe there are others I haven't heard there since July.

I heard "Lollipops and Roses" by Jack Jones. I haven't heard that one since a Worthless Classics affiliate was doing it on a local show. Not one that still plays that music, though.

And this morning "Impossible Dream".

And last night I saw Robert Goulet on a commercial. But I haven't heard him lately on the radio.

I've been listening to the Dial Global Standards format for days. I think its great! Just enough AC and Classic Country to boost its appeal. We'll be adding it to our new station soon!

Sorry...but real boring, unless you like the same 300 songs twice a day. No depth...but, heck, it's the right price. A good one, maybe a two share. Chick Watkins is a good programmer, but locked in to the "what worked then works best" formula.

I heard this complaint once by a station owner who is on this site bragging about how well his oldies station is doing. He played oldies on his morning show, but he occasionally played standards, and with his new station being allowed to broadcast separately thanks to new rules on how many AM stations one owner could have, he planned to use Stardust. Then he was told he couldn't because another Stardust station was too close. And this was before Music of Your Life (which he changed the station to a few years later, but there were so few commercials I could tell he wasn't making any money; now it's Jones oldies). He said AM Only wasn't a good product. He decided on Jones AC.

I was happy with AM Only then, except Stardust did do more big bands. Now, i'm hearing standards I've never heard. So they must have improved it. Sure, the format ventures farther into AC territory than I would like. But at least they're hanging on to a lot of the older music.
