And The Burn-Outs Just Keep On Comin'

Not to rush Christmas or anything -
but it won't be long before you start hearing
for the millionth time (Burnout status)

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives

Step Into Christmas - Elton John

So This is Christmas - John Lennon

White Christmas - Bing Crosby - But I love the song.
(In fact, that song goes way back we don't even have a year jingle for it - 1942).

Thankfully, we only hafta listen to 'em, if you must, 3 months
outta the year.

With XM/Sirius radio - I've had it for 5 years - I have completely
abandoned AM/FM radio period. I'll only listen to AM if I wanna catch
a talk show on the local talker or news at the TOH. I have lost track of what stations are what and what stations have changed call letters let alone who the jocks are. When I worked in radio and even before XM I could tell you just about all the jocks and what stations they are on. Now, I couldn't tell you who's who and what station they are on except for Qman.
PD's have warned us that to quote a song - 'That there'll be days like this my PD said....'

Ok Burnout song -----

Burning Love - Elvis Presley

Country Burnout - When a Johnny Cash song is played,
they grab 3 and that's it... Ring of Fire / I Walk The Line / Folsom Prison Blues (1956 version). But mainly Ring of Fire..

Ok, back to Coast to Coast AM with George.

I can't believe that nobody's mentioned Maggie May by Rod Stewart.

D'accord. Not only uber-crispy, but the song title that launched a thousand bad on-air puns, thusly:

"Rod Stewart, boys and girls.....'Maggie May'.....Natalie Wood....but Katy DID!!!" (haw, haw, haw)

(Rimshot fired on rattling Grey Fidelipac)

Not sure any of your suggestions get played on the radio anymore Warsaw. How about any 80s song by Madonna?

Great thread! I'll break this into two catagories....

Soft Rock/Easy Listening
How Deep is Your Love - BeeGees
Your Song - Elton John
Borderline - Madonna
Aint Missing you - I think its John Waite...but that goddamn song is on all the time
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald & Sundown - This guy had so many great songs, but this is the only stuff that Gordon Lightfoot gets to hear on the radio.

Rock - All of these are fried to friggin' crisp
Revolution/Back in the USSR/Sgt.Pepper - The Beatles - out of the whole stinking catalog from probably the most influential rock band ever, these are the only 3 songs they EVER play - and they play them a ton.
Hey Joe/Wind Cries Mary - Hendrix
Hotel California - Eagles
Dream On - Aerosmith - please stop with this song...please.
We are the champions - Queen
Sweet Home Alabama/Gimme Three Steps/Free Bird - The fact that these three songs get the airplay that they get is a sin....
Start Me Up/Angie/Gimme Shelter - Great songs but now I hate them.
Shook me all night long - AC/DC - Again, please stop.
Boys are back in town - Thin Lizzy
Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi (ACtually, anything from Slippery When Wet)
Werewolves of London - Zevon
&
All the same shit from Pink Floyd
All the same shit from Genisis
All the same shit from Clapton
&
Basically all the same shit that 96WCMF plays on a daily basis. Nothing new ..just a retread of all the songs from the day before and the day before that...etc....etc...etc....etc...
Thank you

Can't remember when I heard Sundown last on the radio, however I agree about Ed Fitz. All the rock classics are dead on.

I can't help but wonder how many PDs out there are thinking "those aren't burn-outs, that's a PLAYLIST!"

I have to say that there a several tunes listed among the burnouts that haven't graced the Buffalo airwaves enough to make the category here. Then again, maybe it's just my listening habits...

In the sub-category of Songs I Haven't heard in a While and Don't At All Miss: both AC-Oldies staples that fall into the "Alone Again Naturally" category: "Without You" -Nilsson; "Total Eclipse of the Heart" -Bonnie Tyler. AMF! (A Manly Farewell) to both.

Roll: Twilight Zone theme, up and under:

VO: "Imagine if you will, posting on a radio message board the name of a song you did not like, only to hear it play less than 3 hours later...."

Happened just that way this morning around 8:45 while getting my car repaired at one of the quality West Herr dealerships (unsolicited, unpaid testimonial) and reading Jimmy Buffet's "A Pirate Turns 50." Probably Sirius/XM playing on the house sound system when... (Twilight Zone theme up for 3 seconds, gradual fade to hook of song) Bonnie Tyler begins wailing "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Only one thing would've made it more cosmic; "Margaritaville" (another song mentioned in this thread) coming up as the next song.

Weee-youuu-weee-youuu-weee-youuu.

Roll: Twilight Zone Theme up with bongos trail out

C'mon, let's get into REALLY crispy territory...

"Proud Mary" by CCR. How this became the "definitive" CCR song is beyond me.

"It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls. It could only be worse if your subject to the video.

"Celebrate" by Kool & The Gang. Only Mike Radnowski's aunts still groove to that - and only after multiple visits from Genny.

Another one that plays nonstop it seems at times - at least on one station I can think of - is "Don't Worry Baby", by The Beach Boys, but also called The Boys of Summer, which is now another group.

Burned Out in 1973.....

Ted Nugent -- Stranglehold ---- But really, even though perhaps you don't see them every day..... there Really are lots and lots and lots of dumba$$es in every nook and cranny of every city and burb in the country to market whatever seels on burn out hit radio stations all across the country.....

They are there.... in great numbers.... in the shadows.... buying those goods and "services" sold on those helpful hit stations...

"Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" by Crystal Gayle...can't believe she's even considered country or the sister of Loretta Lynne cause she never sounded like she was.

So does Mrs. Airtime! And she doesn't drink. "Celebrate" was big when we first met. So, it may be crispy. But the Airtimes still remember the good times when we were young every time we hear it!

So does Mrs. Airtime!

This opens up a new ball of wax - spouse/family member likes/dislikes. My Mrs. W absolutely loves Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I'll just stick my head in the gas oven, thank you.

TheRover has a good point. While there are many people who have given up on radio as an option for music, there are still just as many out there who like the drible that is pumped out by most commercial stations these days. These people don't even mind the same tired tracks being played over and over. In fact, I think some actually LIKE hearing these tunes? Why? Because they have been lulled into a sense of comfort over the years by the unchanging playlist. It's what they know, and hence, what they like. And anything that is outside of their comfort zone is, well, scary. That's probably why these songs keep showing up in these focus groups that I hear so much about.

Oh, and I'll cast my vote for burn-outs. Any song by Michael Bolton!

Amen on the Michael Boton vote. But people know him and women dig his act. BTW, not to be the spelling police, bit it's "drivel," like drool.

People like familiar. That's why they go to Wendy's and McDonald's when they travel with family and kids on vacation, because they know what they're gonna get. Pre-packaged, pre-measured, shrink-wrapped meals full of preservatives and chemicals that turn their kids into raging smurfs when they get back in the rent-a-car and evacuates their bowels when they get back to the hotel room.

Older listeners especially, like the hits; the chestnuts, the songs that make them comfortable. "Good Time & Great Oldies" was a home run slogan. Yup, life was great in the 50s and 60s... when the country emerged from Korea then slogged through Vietnam, when "separate but equal" was the name of the game at the lunch counter, not to mention JFK, RFK and MLK being cut down. But we remember the good times, when the US put a man on the moon, Chevy's with fins and GTO's (very cool cars, BTW.)

I'm not rippin' on the music or the hits... or the cars. The poodle skirts were hideous although the mini-skirts got my attention. Gotta play the hits. All Stiffs, All the Time is a one way ticket to a 1 share very likely comprised of every one of us radio nudnicks who post here.

New music in radio programmers' eyes means safe music that was tested and went through the homoginization blender. Notice how many Hot ACs and ACs play songs that were on the Alternative charts and music from the Lillith Fair acts in the 90s? Same for Classic Rock and Classic Hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. More Than A Feeling and Brown Eyed Girl are crispier than a bucket of KFC , but a majority of people who still listen to radio know the songs... they may be sick of them but the songs don't threaten them, so those radio listeners keep on listening. Nothing inherently wrong with this. That's Just The Way it Is as Walter Cronkite and Bruce Hornsby might say.

Run that by me once again... why do I need to listen to your radio station? And how do we get people to still listen to radio. Radio aint radio anymore. In ten years, it could all be gone, if not unrecognizable. AM, FM, the whole schmeer, pfffft! A thing of the past. Good Times, Great Oldies indeed.
