And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

Radknowski Painting should have bought an ad on this thread. Over 16,000 "impressions" racked up so far!

Tough call.... low cume!!!

Post #1000 on a thread that began in a mild beer haze, I've selected one of the all time great Motown songs. Although it peaked at #23 on Billboard's pop chart, it went to #2 on the Soul charts. Said to be Motown's first hit in 1960 (a claim I can't believe) I submit for your stiff pleasure, the original quintessential call for the the lean green: Please enjoy Barret Strong's "Money."

That's whutIwant.

ADD attack. While singing the praises of Barret Strong and his version of "money," the song I wanted to nominate for this meandering thread was the quirky version of the song by The Flying Lizards. "Money" has been covered by every bar band in America, as well as a group of guys from England. The 'Lizards' version, according to many musicologists, is truly bad, but it's also been said that's exactly what was intended.

The Flying Lizards once jocularly gave a radio trade - maybe it was R&R (RIP) - an accounting of the production costs involved in their "Money (That's What I Want)" cover. It was precisely the cost of a 7" reel of tape.

As long as we're talking prehistoric Motown: The Contours' followup to "Do You Love Me"...."First I Look At The Purse."

Also a stiff for the J. Geils Band!

While on topic of "Cover songs by the J. Geils Band That Were Stiffs" gotta include "Land of a Thousand Dances" which achieved the lofty position of #60 on the charts in 1983

And more Toto for good measure:

"I'll Supply the Love"

-I liked Toto's "Girl Goodbye" for it's very cold ending, which made for some great segs!

Eagles - The Greeks Don't want No Freaks

Might I add "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" by Rolf Harris to the list? It's the first record I ever bought (at Cavage's for 88 cents). I still have it and the original picture sleeve.

I've often wondered why America's great soft ACs don't have this gem in rotation. WJYE? WLTW? KOST? You're missing a great "oh wow" opportunity.

Nick Seneca

I still have that LP....with all of them gathered around photographed against a seamless. BTW, the NCM were of course the inspiration for the "New Main Street Singers" in the Christopher Guest satire movie of the folk period in American pop music, "A Mighty Wind."

The New Main Streeters sounded amazingly like the New Christy Minstrels. One might say, actually: as good as.

I remember hearing "Evil Woman" by Crow on WCFL and I'm sure it was in the oldies library at CKLW. (The Big 8 had about 1500 titles IIRC. Sigh........)

Barry McGuire was a New Christy Minstrel before striking out on his own with the "Eve of Destruction".

Kenny Rogers, Gene Clark of the Byrds, and Kim Carnes were also former Minstrels.

With the mention of Kim Carnes I submit "Crazy in the Night (Barking at Airplanes)" - even though it peaked at #15 I still consider this one an el-stiff-o.

@yugoidar, you're welcome!

Ahh, the Traveling Wilburys, produced by Jeff Lynne--which brings to mind a track from the Electric Lynne...er...Light Orchestra I believe is appropriate for this thread:

"Last Train to London"

And another one, in this case the song wasn't a stiff, but the movie from which it came was:

"Xanadu"

I am pretty sure that forgotten tunes are entering the thread as well.

Next Plane to London - The Rose Garden
